Pot and Cup size

I pretty much jump from method to method depending on how I feel. I started using a two cup pot when I got into tea last winter. Then I got an ingenuitea which was wonderful, though I generally only made one cup in it.
Recently I’ve been using a little glass pot with a removable strainer (I need to get a better one though) and a 12oz mug which is my new favorite mug right now. Lol. I use one of those mug warmers next to my computer so I can sip at my tea while I’m playing games or surfing Steepster. ^^

I have a 0.7l. for my black teas. Have a chatford 2 cup teapot with strainer for my greens. Also use a Japanese teapot (iron cast – 2/3 cup) for green tea.

have a gaiwan, but hardly use it anymore.

If two people are having tea, we use a 24 ounce chatsford english style teapot with 8oz mugs or those little chinese restaurant cups. On my own, I use a basket style infuser with a mug anywhere from 8-16 ounces. And on a weekday morning, I just fling a bag of Yorkshire Tea into a 16 ounce travel mug.

I brew my Chinese teas gongfu style with my 5oz gaiwan, and then pour the tea into a 6oz glass. For Japanese greens, I use a 6oz shudei kyusu. I generally drink from an 8oz mug and infuser (or tea bag) for miscellaneous teas. I have a 12oz mug, but I only use it for chrysanthemum tea, which yields a lot of flavor per cup.

I use my 16oz cast iron teapot instead of an infuser if the the leaves or flowers need room to expand.

I usually steep 6 oz at a time. My favorite teapot is an 8 oz glass pot (see picture at left); at work I use a 20 oz Japanese pot but still only steep about 6 oz at a time. I use a number of handle-less teacups I bought in Japan that are all about 6-8 oz.

I was curious to see how ‘normal’ was the amount I brew. I see it is kind of all over the place. The one thing I do notice is a typical electric kettle is bigger than most of us need. I realize we are kind of our own little niche but you would think a small one would be easier to find.

When I was in university my room-mate had a little kettle/hotpot item that you could use for water or heating soups, etc. It was maybe .5 litre at most and perfect for many single tea drinkers. Of course I’ve never seen one since, but I loved that thing.

It turns out that the minimum line on my Adagio kettle is just barely over 12oz, my usual size preference. It makes it easy for me to pour just enough water for 1 mug of tea.

I have a strong preference for 12oz of tea at a time (when brewing western style). It is just somehow the perfect amount for me. I have a 16oz teapot at home but it always feels like a little too much.

definitely depends on time of day/occasion. first thing in the morning, i make a single 6-8oz-ish teacup of something brisk and black. midday or early afternoon on days i have the time to set aside i often have a tea that feels special, requiring my undivided attention—a nice oolong or green or occasionally a pu erh, usually gongfu or grandpa style in my 5oz gaiwan. when my husband comes home, typically around 4pm, i use a 3 cup (24oz) teapot to make flavored tea (i’m gradually getting him into tea and he has a major sweet tooth) so we can each have a cup and then a little bit more each to top off. in the evening after dinner i often sit at my desk and write for pleasure or on the couch in the living room reading or watching a movie or favorite show, and i use a 16oz travel mug or a thermos full of hot water to make multiple servings of an herbal (or sometimes a flavored oolong or green if i’m feeling caffeine-reckless). on saturday mornings when we head out to do errands i take my 16oz travel mug. i suppose i should pare it down to one way for simplicity’s sake, but i love the way i take tea different ways throughout the day to suit my needs and mood and the type of tea i’m making.

and when it warms up (which is most of the year here) i keep some quart-size mason jars and/or my 8cup takeya pitcher full of cold steeped tea in the fridge all the time (tends to take the place of those midday and evening treat teas).
