I’d like a 50ml for gongfu when I’m drinking alone. My 100ml gaiwan just makes a little more per steep then I want.

50ml pots are really great for very expensive teas that can handle a great deal of re-steeps. Personally, I prefer that size.

I saw a picture of one right next to a golf ball and it looked to small for practical use. Are there any pictures that would show me how big they are?

This video shows one being used in the full bore ceremony. http://youtu.be/Yr5jhZGHxfw It is teeny! But teeny would let me use less leaf, and would have smaller pours – letting me do more infusions before hitting that ‘too much liquid to drink another drop’ wall.

A lot of vendors mis-report sizes too, or don’t measure in a standard way, so 50 ml may not actually be 50 ml. 50 ml is pretty small – I do like smallish pots, but I think 60-80 ml would be the minimum I’d use for most of the teas I drink, and just keep in mind you’ll still be limiting yourself to teas with a really large leaf size.

In some cases, you do actually want the tea to press against the pot when it expands, but making sure there’s enough room for expansion is one other reason that 50 ml and smaller pots can be tricky.

I classify 50ml pots as ULTRA CUTE SQUEEEEE! So small, so cute!

Anyways, I have a 150ml yixing for sheng pu’er. Turns out, it’s more like 120ml. It gets a little hairy in there when I got pretty big leaf’d sheng, plus not much tea since the leaf sucks in water too and expands, making it good for 1 person session. With that said, see what tea you want to use for a 50ml yixing.
Could always test run that size with a gaiwan to see if you like it.

You would get more use out of an 80 ml pot, but even that is on the small side. All of the advice given above is good.

I would only use a pot that small for steeping a small amount of a very expensive or special tea.

Cheers.
