Brent, I tried clicking on your company’s website, but it just asks me to log in. Is that normal?

Yes. It’s not open to the public right now. Thanks for checking though!

Definitely not ok since as a company they buy tea by weight from their suppliers.
At our company we only have one size tins to fit 50g of tea but our Da Hong Pao tea is extremely lightweight so the tin only fits 25g of Da Hong Pao. In this case, we send a tin + ziplock bags with 25g more.
Weird that Adagio would do this, since they are normally very oriented on customer satisfaction.
Melanie – thank you for standing your ground and making Adagio change their policy, thus benefiting all tea drinkers out there.

Tea should and is sold by weight by everyone from the teafields to the end consumer. Anything else is just gung ho crazy ;)

I’m glad that they at least reached out to you and tried to make it right eventually, but it seems to me like it took entirely too much effort on your part for something they should have responded to immediately.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed that no where on the site does 3oz ever appear as 3.0oz. On significant figures that means if they send us anywhere from 2-4oz they can justifiably say that it was 3oz. If it was 3.0 oz, that margin would be 2.9-3.1oz. An ounce is alot in tea.

2.5oz to 3.5oz actually, less that 2.5 should be labelled as 2, and 3.5 and over as 4. But your general point is correct :)

I’d expect something labeled as 3oz to be pretty damn close to 3.0 oz, 2-4 ounces labeled as 3 is totally unacceptable, plus or minus 33% of something is a huge variation, you wouldn’t let your butcher get away with that kind of nonsense!

Steve, you’re right. I forgot about rounding.

I feel bad for everybody in this situation.

I mean, it’s seriously awesome that Adagio do custom blends (and they make up the contents of like half my kitchen cupboards, for reals) and I get that the sheer logistics of calculating the exact right amount of ounces for every blend and all the things that go into it and making sure it all fits in the pouch is, well, impossible. I can’t imagine there’s enough demand for any given blend to warrant them having different-sized pouches to ensure all the weights are the same, or being able to calculate exactly how many ounces are in any given blend, given that there are literally thousands of them and each blend page is based on a standard template. I agree that calling it a “3oz pouch” is misleading, considering that if it’s something voluminous like white tea, it won’t be a full 3, but at a loss as to what they should call it instead. Thoughts?

That said, good for you for noticing and raising the issue with them. I hope they manage to figure out a way to make it work.

I just noticed that it’s the same thing with the Adagio Sampler sets. It says: “each sampler set includes ten community favorites packaged in spiffy one-ounce metal tins” which makes you think you might get 1 oz of EACH tea, but no, you get the 1 oz tins.

You can see in this picture that all of the teas are between .6 and .9 oz. http://oi60.tinypic.com/iy32br.jpg

I feel that they should definitely change the wording on that to make it clearer that the actual tea inside varies depending on the weight, but that each tin is stuffed full.

Personally, I’m not disappointed because I knew that the sampler was a gimmicky thing to make me buy pretty tins that happened to have tea in them, but when I get a chance I’ll try to send them a suggestion that they edit the wording.

Kind of like how the Love Petals set currently on the front page is 4oz for two tins out of three, but the white tea only holds 1.4oz even though the tins are the same size?

I’m afraid to weigh the 6oz tin of custom blend I ordered now. Just because it doesn’t feel nearly heavy enough to be near 6oz. On the other hand, I wonder if they use ‘net weight’ as a descriptor as including the tin?
