Fruit Flavored Pu-Erhs

Steepsters, I need aid!

Let me back up a bit. My boyfriend bought me tea for Christmas, which was so sweet of him. He went to a local tea store, tried a bunch of tea, and tried to determine what I would like that he also liked. He knew I liked black teas best, and that I liked chocolate, cream, vanilla type flavors if I drank flavored tea. From what I understand, he only liked black tea that were fruit flavored, and that straight black tea and also other kinds of flavors of black tea did not please him.

He ended up choosing a toffee flavored pu-erh tea, because he really liked the way it tasted and he thought it lacked the bitterness and astringency of the black teas he tried.

I’m kind of thinking now he dislikes the actual kind of characteristics of black tea, and that he finds pu-erh better tasting because it lacks the kind of sharp bite black tea does. So I’d like to find a fruit flavored pu-erh to serve him when he’s here. I thought I wouldn’t have a problem finding a good one, but I guess dessert flavors are much more common to pair with pu-erh.

Now, I know Teavana has the two strawberry flavored pu-erhs. It’s just recently, Teavana teas have been tasting horribly artificial to me, and I actually have a strong aversion to artificial strawberry smells/ tastes, as they used to make me really sick when I was younger. So I’m worried the strawberry Teavana teas will not work for me.

Then I thought about Adagio, which has the new flavored pu-erhs. It’s just I don’t love orange tea, so the orange one I may not like, and the hazelnut chocolate berry one seems like it may be too much chocolate and not enough berry and that I may still have the strawberry issue.

Does anyone know of any other flavored pu-erhs? Or does anyone have any experience with the Adagio teas or the Teavana teas? I don’t need to buy a whole lot of tea, just enough to occasionally brew from him and myself.

Thanks guys. Browsing the Steepster tasting notes isn’t helping much and I’d like a more targeted opinion.

Nothing But Tea has a strawberry flavoured pu-erh and an orange flavoured one. Both I find to be very nice indeed. We’ve pretty much always got some orange pu-erh about the place. I don’t know what NBT is like shipping-wise to America though.

I admit to not having tried it yet myself, but I’ve had Lupicia’s Sunny Fruits Puer (“citrus and tropical fruit”) on my shopping list for a while.

The problem I have found with fruit flavored pu-erh’s is the poor quality of the base material pu-erh. That said, Verdant tea has a fruit/herbal/cinnamon flavored one which I have not tried, but is made with very high quality pu-erh. You can read about it here: http://verdanttea.com/teas/sweet-cinnamon-puer/?.

DavidsTea has a few and generally they’re yummy! Blood Orange Pu-erh is one of my favorites.
