Tea on Kiva

As I’m sure many of you know, Kiva is a half charity/half microlending site that lets people help others around the world who don’t have access to a regular bank loan. Today it occurred to me to look into loans that involved tea and I found one! There are several, if you search, for people buying fertilizers to grow tea, but this one is for a tea cafe. He wants to repair his kitchen.

Maybe it would be nice to start a Steepster team on Kiva? There’s already a top running team for people who fish or sell or catch fish and loans for that.

What do you all think?

I created one and added the first few loans. I got impatient.

(This is an invite link. If you don’t want to use it, please just go to www.kiva.org and search in teams – common interest for Steepster On Kiva.)

It makes sense to use the invite link if you don’t have an account though! It gives Starfevre an extra $25 credit to put towards the loans we’re trying to fund! (But that money doesn’t get paid back to us – it’s just paid forward to someone else)

I think I joined your team. Let me know if you don’t see me. This is a great idea. When I first joined, there were a few tea farmers out there and some good tea stuff pops up from time to time.

Great! You can, of course, put other loans to the team if you want to, but my initial loans on there (they should show up somewhere…) are all tea related.

Just checked and I see you! You don’t have a pretty picture there though like you do on here.

I like the loans that you picked out. I’m waiting to get back one more donation and I should have enough in the account to donate to one of those loans. :)

Great!

Oooh, I should post a pic.

Coolness. I’m kickstarting right now, but this looks like a good thing for later in the spring! Thank you for sharing it.

Oh, that’s an awesome idea…I’ll definitely be joining the team in a few weeks once I’ve the ability to fund someone. :)

I’m in! This is a great idea. I’ve been on Kiva a little while, but this is another reminder to kick some money in! (My previous loans are paying back so slowly – I’d rather just add more!)

Very cool idea. I will have to check it out.

I’m so happy to see all the responses! If you’re not on Kiva and you join using my link, I’ll get $25 to loan (but it doesn’t come back to me, it pays back to Kiva, as far as I understand it) so it would be a one time extra loan for the team! Or someone else’s link on here if anyone wants to post theirs.

I just wanted to give this thread a bit of a bump so newer members can check it out and join the Steepster team!

The steepster page is here: http://www.kiva.org/team/steepster_on_kiva

AND if anyone wants to try it please sign up through a recruitment link

(it gives us a $25 credit to apply to a new loan!)

If you don’t know anything about Kiva, it’s basically an organization that helps provide loans to people in underdeveloped countries to help them get a foot up. It’s not charity because you are giving loans, but the terms are set up so that they are more reasonable than anything the person would find on their own, and because the money comes from many groups of people, the risk of loss to the people loaning it is minimal.

I just posted 3 new tea-related loans to donate to.

Check out this guy: http://www.kiva.org/lend/697403 It’s not always easy to find a loan that is solely for tea but this one is.
