Once again, DavidsTea customer service is amazing. BEWARE THE COLOR CHANGING WHALES MUG

So I purchased the gorgeous color changing whales nordic mug from DavidsTea when I was picking up the spring line of teas to try. I’ve used it off and on since then, because while I love the color changing mugs, I can’t just throw them in my dishwasher, so I’m hesitant to reach for them. But I used my recently and got together a sink of hand wash only dishes and mugs. I added the whales mug and it sank to the bottom, so it was one of the last things I washed up.

Imagine my surprise and sadness when I discovered several of the whales peeling off. They really are just stickers on the outside of the mug. Deeply saddened by this, I immediately e-mailed Davids to see if they’d be willing to fix it. I received a response five minutes later letting me know that they’re so, so sorry this happened and they’d be more than happy to replace my mug with any nordic or perfect mug of my choice. I could either pick one up at my local DT or they would send me one. I chose to pick one up at my local DT, where they immediately knew who I was when I gave them my name, exchanged it no problem, and apologized 2-3 times for what happened with my other mug.

I opted for the whales perfect mug instead, which is not color changing but super cute. So if you have the color changing whales mug, I know it says not to soak but it really means that. Apparently even 10 minutes was too much.

Of course, I meant to just walk in, pick up my new mug and leave without purchasing anything, but that flew right out the window when I saw the easter stuff. So I walked out with the new mug, the easter tea hunt, and all three easter eggs of tea…as well as the new rewards program! So excited about that one!

I’ve run into issues with Davids before, and every single time it was handled incredibly well and better than I ever expected. They have the best customer service I’ve ever seen, hands down.

New rewards? Tell us more!

I’m patiently waiting they day when David’s comes to Minneapolis so I can go to a store.

They now have a rewards card, finally! It’s shaped like a little mug and it’s too dang cute. Free cup of tea on your birthday, free cup for signing up, etc.

Oooooooooh. :O

That sounds ok. It’s too bad that the balance resets in December though! Guess you better earn enough to redeem by then.

So, basically you spend $100 to get 50 grams free. I know MY 50g tea will be Gold Rush, or something equally expensive…

Yuuup. But hey, I spend so much in store that my points will rack up quickly lol.

OMGsrsly said

The fact that the points reset on the rewards card really bothers me. If I spend money and gain rewards, I kind of expect those rewards to hang around. I might share a card with a friend, just so she can take advantage of my purchases.

Of course the start this right after I spent $50+ in store at the beginning of the month. :P I’m actually surprised they haven’t promoted it much yet, this was the first I’ve heard of it.

As for the reset, I agree with you guys about that being unfortunate. There’s a lot of “programs” that do similar but usually it’s only if you haven’t earned/spent any points within a year rather than just outright resetting it no matter the transaction history.

OMGsrsly said

Yeah, like it’s my own fault I’m losing Sbux gold status (I’m drinking WAY more tea than coffee now!), so I get that. Just a general reset though? :/

Hey everyone! We’re happy to answer any questions about our Frequent Steeper program, but just wanted to share this. From our FAQ:

“Every 3 months, your points will be converted into free loose leaf tea. Any left over points are kept in your account so you can keep building them towards the next rewards period. So, if you earned 370 points, when you are sent the notification of your 3 free 50g/2 oz bags of tea, your point balance will be reduced to 70. Then, during the next cycle, you can continue to build off the remaining 70 points in your seasonal balance!”

So in this case, you would have 3 × 50g of free tea, which you would need to claim within 60 days. However, the remaining points aren’t lost at the end of a season.

If you’re looking for any additional info, you can find the full FAQ at www.davidstea.com/frequent-steeper.

Cheers!
DT

Yes but they are lost at the end of the year which is what we were discussing…

“Every three months, we’ll send you an email telling you how much free tea you’ve earned. If you don’t earn enough points for a free bag loose leaf tea, we’ll roll the balance over into the next 3-month period. At the end of December, we reset your point balance.

ETA: At least that’s how I was interpreting that last sentence…

TeaLady441 said

Updated: I’m with Kirlika here. It’s a little confusing.

So the points do not reset in December?

DAVIDsTEA said

Ahhh, noted. This is indeed the case for now, but we’ll pass your feedback on to our team and see what they can do.

Thanks,
DT

Yay! Glad to hear they were able to swap it out without any issues, but I have to say I am rather disappointed with these colour changing mugs! I had no issues with my autumn one, but I think the lines were so thin/fine that I didn’t realize they were just pasted on.

When I rec’d my whale mug in the mail it was very obvious that the stickers were just tacked on. From day one I could see the edges where I could grab and peel them off. :| I’ve been very, very careful with my mug and I haven’t lost a whale yet, but I don’t think they should have sold them like this. I’d rather just have the design and not the color change too if it’s that delicate!

But I’ve also had to exchange product before and they do have great customer service. I hope they learn their lesson with these mugs though and don’t offer anything quite so shoddy in the future!

I know! I have one from a while ago (a white perfect mug with a tree that turns reddish pink) that I’ve never had any trouble with and the color changing part seems much, much sturdier.

But that’s why I got the whales perfect mug. Same design but no color changing issues. I’ll miss my ghosty whales, though.

TeaLady441 said

I love the nordic styles, but honestly if I had seen the whales in store before I ordered mine, I would have grabbed something else. :| But for now I will treasure my ghostly whales while I can! And hand-wash. And NEVER soak.

I got my rewards card today too! And I got the easter trail teas… You’re in for a surprise! I didn’t wait to open mine, the May Tea of the Month is in there, and it’s delicious! Mines already gone! It’s so good, and I know I’ll be buying 100-200g of it in May!

I opened it too, I couldn’t resist, and it looks yummy!

Oh my gosh, so excited about the rewards program! also, not at all surprised at their amazing response. They really are an incredible company.

I know, right? I am always the first to sing the praises of this company, they’ve always gone above and beyond when it comes to customer service. It’s part of why I love them so.

Ugh. I’m very jealous of you Canadians who can just cross the street and walk into a DAVIDs!
I consider myself as one of the luckier Americans who has a DT in the state that I live in! Of course, it’s an 8 hour drive away but I’ll take that over not being able to walk into one at all :)

When I visited their San Francisco location, I was talking to the employees and they said they might actually open up another DAVIDs in the LA area which is much much closer to me :)

Pointless story up ahead (about DT customer service and all):
I do have to say, I absolutely LOVE the customer service that David’s provides! I’ve heard so many stories on steepster about their customer service, but I haven’t experienced it firsthand until two weeks ago.
I visited two tea stores: Lupicia and Davids. Now I’m not saying that Lupicia had terrible customer service, I’m saying that Davids had exceptional service! The lady at Lupicia was very nice. I asked her if they had a certain tea in stock and she went to the back and grabbed me a package (Lupicia has all their teas prepackaged so you literally just grab, pay and go). But with Davids, the lady that helped me out actually took the time to get to know me, and I got to know her. She lived in the LA area and is attending uni in SF so now she’s working at DT. I lived in the SF area, and now I’m at uni in the LA area. We talked, she was smiling as she was weighing all the teas I wanted. She ended up giving me a free oz of the Coffee Cake! Like it was only an extra $4 or so, but she insisted that it was on her.

Never have I seen customer service like this, and this was at a retail store.
I was a first time customer and I was greeted with this. No one knew me, I was making a ruckus and piling up the counter with close to 15 canisters of tea because I’m an indecisive little person and I definitely felt like I was being a menace because I was asking Jillian to pull teas down so I can smell them and you know what she said? “Don’t apologize at all, this is so much fun!”

Let me tell you a thing: I’m a third year student studying Hospitality Management. I told this to one of my customers when I worked at a diner and he said “So you’re majoring in how to be nice to people?” Well, yes and no. It’s a business major, focused on the management of Hotels, Restaurants and Private Clubs.
I did an internship with Disney for my major last year, and we all know that Disney wants to keep that excellent customer service thing with Special Touches and Magical Moments. It is imbedded into my mind, and whenever I’m buying something or eating out, I think to myself “How would Disney do it?” And let me just say, Jillian knows great customer service. I got Disney-level customer service at a wee little tea store that’s stuck at the bottom-most level at one of the largest and busiest malls in San Francisco.

Needless to say, I will and forever will be a loyal customer of Davids. It may be an hour long flight home, and another hour to drive/take the train into the City, but if that means that I’ll be treated nicely, then heck, I’m going to make a trip out of it!

/end story. Props to whoever managed to read through my entire babble haha

I just posted this and I thought it was much shorter because of the scrollbar thing wow didn’t realize I typed a lot

agreed. the only loose tea shop in town anymore (there’s a cafe downtown that sells tins of art of tea, but it’s not a dedicated tea shop or anything, and the place that used to serve afternoon tea with a full menu is gone) that i’m familiar with is teavana in the suburbs in the mall. i would trade it for a david’s.

Hey Aisling! Thanks again for the feedback on the mugs. We really do appreciate it.

Just a little background on the colour changing mugs: so the decal that’s used for them can’t be heated at the same temperature as a regular decal (otherwise it destroys the heat sensitive properties). This makes it a little more delicate, which is why we occasionally see them peel. That said, going forward, we’ve worked it out with our vendor so that they’ll pass the mugs through the kiln twice, which should help the decals adhere to the mug much better. The first batch of these double-fired mugs will launch this summer!

You guys have the best customer service! I never hesitate to buy from you because even if things do go bad, I know you’ll make it right with no hassle. You’re really the best!

Thanks for clarifying the issues with the mugs and letting us know you have heard us and have already made steps to fix the issue. That says a lot about the company and helps make Davids a company I’m proud to recommend to my friends!

TeaLady441 said

Yay! Glad to hear you fixed the issue. I love that you guys listen to feedback and work on improving everything instead of denying that there’s an issue to begin with. (Seriously, I really respect that).

I love my whale mug but am terrified the stickers will peel off, so I baby the heck out of it. Looking forward to grabbing something I can ‘knock around’ a little more in the season!

Uniquity said

Man, I hope the new batch has sweet designs. I only resisted the whales because the price was too high. If the new ones stick better and are equally cute, I might have to give in. A bonus (in store) tea sample or lower price would help push me over the edge too! :)

I had the issue with the mug as well and I emailed them and they told me to go to the store and they would exchange it. When I told them I would be busy and unable to get to the store for a while, they told me to let them know what store I would be going to and they would let them know I contacted them so there was no hassle when I finally got to the store to exchange it.

I thought I’d post my question here, while we’re praising Davids and Davids seems to be taking note. I am a young person (who can legally work, no worries) in New York City, and I just saw that all three Davids in NYC have tea guide openings. I have no retail experience other than selling lemonade and old books at competitive prices in front of my house. I do however know a ridiculous amount about tea in general, and I’m also steadily working towards trying every single Davids Tea. Would Davids Tea hire me for the summer, despite my youth and lack of professional experience? I’m just asking this because I’m rather nervous to go into the store and ask about it. Any tips for applying and getting hired part-time?

Don’t be nervous at all! I say go for it. Ask the employees there and get to know what the job actually entails. If it’s something that interests you, then apply! The worst they can do is turn you down. If that happens, ask them what kinds of skills they’re looking for and how you can improve.
I’ve applied for many jobs, and got turned down plenty of times. It’s just learning how to grow from it. Good luck!

DAVIDsTEA said

Hey Isaila! We unfortunately couldn’t say without going through the formal application process, but don’t be nervous at all. Our staff are super sweet, and would be happy to help you with any questions you may have.

All the best,
DT

I had the best service not once, but TWICE at the Chicago David’s over by the Damen Blue Line station. I was in Chicago over the winter a lot for work, and managed to get to the David’s twice. The person who helped me the first time had been there for a week, and we must have had 20 canisters out on the counter, and I picked 5 or so to buy. The second time, she remembered me (and it was a month or so later)! I had another person helping me, and the same awesome customer service.

I really, really, really want a David’s in Phoenix!!

Not gonna lie, I love me some DT customer service. Two especially nice stories:

I decided to go all-out for my then-BF for Christmas, despite the fact that he doesn’t celebrate Christmas (he’s Hindu, so pseudo-celebrates because I made him. lol). I decided he should partake in the Advent Calendar tradition, but he was off chocolate because he was “on a diet” (the evil D-word). I decided to make him an advent calendar out of Mason jars, and decorate the outside to look like the DT tea page on their website. And since they were to fit nicely in a shallow box I got to store them all, I had to get as many teas as were jars that fit, so it went from Nov. 30th to Jan. 2nd. That’s…a painful amount of measuring for the poor girl at the store I went to (~25g of each, give or take). We stood and talked for almost an hour while she dutifully measured all of the teas I wanted. She learned about my life, I learned about hers, and now we share a hairdresser. lol. At the end of all of that she gave me a free Cocoa Canela latte that she made with chocolate soy milk for free. Yum :) Made my day.

Another time I went in to my local DT in search of a replacement whisk for matcha. I had purchased my matcha set in Japan when I was there in 2006, so when it went flying off the counter (I’m clumsy, what can I say?) right as my dad was walking past and he stepped on it and shattered it, I couldn’t just walk to Japan to buy a new one. I still have the pieces and everything… :( Went in to DT with my broken whisk, and was like “I need a new one :(” I ended up spending almost an hour in the store talking about my Japan shenanigans. Paid for my whisk, ended up buying a matcha perfect spoon, too (because…I apparently have zero self-restraint). It was only when I got to my car that I noticed that 20g of matcha had snuck into the bag. I thought “that was weird. Didn’t ask for that”. On the back of the receipt was “sorry for your bad luck with your broken whisk. Hopefully you like your new one just as much! Thanks for sharing your stories. Enjoy some of David’s matcha on us!” WHO DOES THAT?! I’ve since bought a ton of matcha from them, but that experience left me smiling for a very, very long time.

I also like the personalized touches added onto the bottom of the packing slips when you order online. My favourite was from Chris: “have a TEA-riffic day! Thanks for ordering!” :)

I heard about the Frequent Steeper program and signed up right away. I’m with everyone else…I don’t understand why points reset at the end of December. I think that’s a silly rule, and hopefully it’s reconsidered prior to December.
