I was recently told that your Matcha actually comes from China. A friend of mine e-mailed and asked directly since you sell the Matcha cheaply in bulk and was told it was Chinese Matcha.

So my point being if this is Chinese Matcha then wouldn’t naming it after Japanese Zen names or anything Japanese at all be misleading?

Hi,
Your friend has asked about Starter Matcha which comes from China. Matcha teas from Japan are much more expensive and I don’t think I can buy it at the price I sell Chinese version. Currently we sell matcha teas from China and Japan, but we’d like to expend our selection since there seem to be 2 types of buyers for matcha. One looking for Japanese matcha since this is “brand” version and usually means better quality (not always) and second type that is either looking for some more economical version to see if they like it or is concerned with radiation. That is why we offer both types.
Every 6-12 month we look for new suppliers that can offer us a better deal on same matcha quality. Last year we were able to lower our matcha pricing 30%. We work very hard to get you the best deal possible. This year we have found a new supplier that sells very nice quality of matcha from Japan. Instead of changing the supplier, we have decided to add new matcha tea to our collection and offer even more unflavored matcha teas. Since the new selection of teas will only come from Japan we wanted to find new names for them. We are also making more visible where the matcha teas come from. Not sure if it interests you, but we’ll be adding matcha tea from Taiwan in the near future. Our goal is to specialize in Matcha teas and offer the largest selection available.
I hope this answers your concern. :-)
PS: did you know that matcha tea was popular WAY before it made it into Japan? But it was Japan that perfected the formula and made it into ceremonial drink that everyone associates matcha with. :-)

Thank you for the information. My friend came about asking as we were talking about Matcha and buying in bulk, I noticed you sell the starter grade Matcha at a very reasonable price. I’m aware of the differences in grade but as far as I am aware the main difference is taste, kitchen and ceremonial grades both have the same anti oxidant content. I drink Matcha everyday for the health benefits, I’m not sure of the differences between the Japanese and Chinese. What leaf is the Matcha made from? That is also another factor that can change the nutritional and anti oxidant content.

Also with the flavoured teas are they all using the Chinese Matcha?

It’s hard to describe the difference between matcha from Japan and China, especially that every supplier carries different quality levels of matcha. It’s a bit like asking from which Frence region comes better wine. It’s not only the product, but sometimes the way it’s made that makes a difference, but even then if I were to give you both products, you’d not be able to tell where they come from. I think it all comes to personal taste. Some have more “earthy” flavor, some have more “grassy” flavor. Some suppliers use the stone grinding process, others new pulverizing technology. Recently I have read somewhere that some suppliers from Japan use special gas during grinding to give the product that nice bright green color. I don’t remember where I have read it or if it’s true, but suppliers are like tea stores, have their own trade secrets that are not open to share.
Part of the change in the next 2-3 weeks will be a better, more visible info as to which teas are from what country. Currently, Royal Matcha and above are from Japan, but this will change soon as we’ll use current names for matcha from China and Taiwan and new names for matcha from Japan.
