Tea Tins

So I’ve realized that my tea tins ($1 holiday tins) are not good enough as they’ve let my teas get old and the flavors are becoming weak in them.

I need some good sealing tea tins. I HATE the kind of tin that the lid just sets down over the tin and you have to pry it off with fingernails. I don’t want to pay a lot. I’d prefer airtight seal. Blue or black is bonus.

Any suggestions?

I know that these are cheap…not sure how great they work though?

I’ve been looking at those per your suggestion on my tasting note! I Like the black inner-sealing cannisters. $3/each isn’t bad. I am considering those. Do look forward to suggestions across the board tho. :)

Taiwan Tea Crafts has some nice looking ones for $4 each, along with some amazing tea. All of their winter stock is on sale right now as well.

I think it’s worth looking at the Oxo POP containers. They’ve got a variety of sizes. Here’s their 0.5 qt version

I’ve got a couple that are translucent but protect against all UV. They’re BPA free as well. I’d prefer mine to be a bit smaller (I got them as gifts), but otherwise we’re very happy.

I’d be worried about something plastic absorbing flavors and contaminating the next tea to reside in it. Have you run into that issue at all or do you just refill it with the same tea?

so far, I’m just refilling with the same tea.

There’s been much discussion on this topic if you do a search for tea storage. Specialty Bottle has some great tins and great prices but the shipping is high. My recommendation is to keep an eye out at used goods stores. You can also seal up your tea in the silver pouches they come in (or buy some) and then put them in the tin. I’ve done that with tins that don’t seal well. It doesn’t give you the full space in the tin but it does keep the tea fresh.
