My search has ended. And thy victory, I have!

I have been looking to match the perfect tea strainer I have owned for years, and have been unsuccessful. I have pleaded with the online tea company I purchase from to get some more teaware strainers, but that can take awhile.

I returned to the original store where I had purchased it in San Luis Obispo, CA, however that store is now specializes in fireplace design! I believe it was a kitchen store before, but they just threw this strainer over by the tea supply area. Naturally, I thought it was just another type of tea strainer, but then again, I am a guy, and not a chef. Confused, I’ve been searching for this odd “tea strainer” for years. Anyhow, last week, I ventured to Target just north of where I am now, and they had something similar. I tried it, and am having the tea now, but the strainer sucks. It is not fine grain enough, and the tea doesn’t sit far enough down in the cup. Still tastes good, though.

After searching Amazon, I found a vendor that has the exact product I’ve had for years. This is the perfect tea cup strainer. Trust me!

The key word is conical, or cone. The tea steeps in the hot water, as a new born babies bottom would warm in bath water. Soothing, refreshing… and yes, even enchanting.

Here is the product on Amazon, and apparently others think it is a great tea strainer, as well. ( http://www.amazon.com/RSVP-Endurance-Conical-Strainer-3/dp/B0000VLZXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1278258765&sr=1-1 )

It’s a little baby chinois! So cute! I just ordered one myself, since I took my favorite one-cup strainer out to my sister’s house and left it there and I keep forgetting to bring it back.

Congratulations on tracking it down, jgh. I know how it is when you’ve found the perfect piece of equipment for the job and none other will do.

Do you use that to strain the tea out (i.e. do you pour it through there when it is done? Or, do you fill it with tea, set it on the cup, and then lift it out when you are done? I’m guessing the latter with the babies bum reference.

And, how does it do with herbals and rooibos? Have you tried that? Rooibos seems to be a real test of a strainer.

I put the tea into the strainer (give it a little tap, so the really little bits shake — out in the sink or something) . Set it inside the cup. Run the water through it, and let it steep for about 5minutes. I pull out the strainer and dump out the tea. Do a quick rinse of the strainer for my next cup.

It’s seriously cute and tiny. I have a large version I use for cooking.

haha, good one. I believe I did, though. I am glad the search has ended. I am just awaiting the two I ordered. One to replace the one I have owned for years, but have yet to wash with soap and water ( to preserve any future tea tastings ), just rinsing with water, and one for work.

It’s nice to hear a success story. I have yet to begin any great searches in my tea journeys – When I was much more crazed about tea (and money was more abundant for me), I bought a LOT of tea ware, so I couldn’t really get attached to a filter in the same way… If one of my brewing methods fails, I just turn to any of my twenty other options.
I have terrible fiscal responsibility.

In any case, enjoy your filter! It’s not what you got that matters, just that it makes you happy. And if it doesn’t put a hole in your wallet, all the better, right?
