Japanese green tea recommendations?

I’m currently in the mood for some good japanese green tea (GT). I was hoping I get some tips on how to interpret quality GT leaves. In my neighborhood I have teavana and Davidstea tea stores. Although they have some flavorful teas, their tea quality is not the best (I can vouch for oolong and pu er). From what I’ve heard their Japanese green teas are of better quality. They both have the gyokuro yamashiro which both sell about $20/50g; yea holy smokes. But I am willing to pay if the quality is good. Any Japanese green tea experts in the area? Does any one know if these are quality GT leaves? If not then does anyone know where I can get some good quality GT leaves online?
In terms of tastes I don’t mind if my GT light or bold, creamy or bitter. It really depends on my mood. But if I were to pick, please recommend some lighter flavored GT leaves.

Thanks so much steepsters!!!

Best would be O-Cha from Japan, they have greens at a variety of prices.

I’m very new to japanese green teas but I really like ordering from O-Cha! I tried their deep steamed Kagoshima Sencha Yutaki Midori (which has really high ratings here on Steepster) it was fantastic! Yesterday I ordered a light steamed sencha and a gyukoro. Seems like a great site!

Teachat has a lot discussion on japanese green teas, so that’s also a tip to check out, just go to the “green tea” section and there are several threads discussing japanese green teas. Link: http://www.teachat.com/

Yunomi.us http://yunomi.us/ – really good quality and a HUGE range of different green teas, lots of stuff you won’t find outside Japan. If you want good japanese greens, why not straight from Japan? They got different grades of Gyokuro available if you want premium quality and samplers to try them all out. The new gyokuros should be out very soon.

Den’s Tea http://www.denstea.com/ – Recommended as you can try their sampler http://www.denstea.com/bnew-to-dens-teab-c-377.html as a new customer. Good prices, great quality, based in California.

I was going to say Den’s Tea actually.

+1 for both Den’s Tea and Yunomi

Another +1 for Den’s. So far I’ve liked what Upton Tea Imports has had to offer.

I third recommend Den’s!!! I will always be obsessed with their Pineapple Sencha, too. But all the greens I’ve had have never disappointing.

This is where I get my teas from. Highly recommeded, and a tat cheaper for EU inhabitants than O-cha. (excise!)
