Yixing Pots & Hard Water?

I’ve been curious to see what everyone’s opinions are regarding hard water and yixing pots. I’ve read about two differing thoughts: hard water is okay to use and would improve the look of the pot OR hard water should never be used because of the mineral build up that could ruin the pot.

I live in an area with very hard water and even though I use a water filter, minerals still build up in the tea kettle. I would be concerned about using this filtered water and the kettle itself (with mineral deposits) with a yixing pot. Is this a silly idea or is it better to use a better filtered water and a completely separate pot for boiling the water?

Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Mineral build up doesn’t ruin the pot, and you can find it frequently in vintage Yixing pots. You can use citric acid to remove the build up or use a Brita pitcher for your tea water,

Thanks for the info, Cwyn!

I clean my kettle out regularly because the deposits build up so quickly even with filtered water!

Anyone know why it’s recommended that filtered water is used for yixing pots specifically if it doesn’t damage them? I just have to wonder if there is a reason for the recommendation besides for the tea itself.

I think it’s recommended because the understanding is that if you’re using a yixing pot, you’re trying to make the best tasting cup of tea possible. Good water = good tea so water quality is usually mentioned.
