Green Tea and Yixing

So I have read a lot of back and forth as to whether or not using a yixing teapot for green tea is a good idea.

One side of the argument says that yixing keeps water too warm and muddies the taste of green tea.

The other side says that it is wonderful and seasons just the same as using it for an oolong or pu erh.

So, who here has seasoned their Yixing for green tea, and what was your opinion of the results?

If you have a newer yixing pot already I would try the green tea in it and see how it tastes. Using the pot for green tea once won’t ruin it. Honestly I think the “too warm” argument is a bit silly because if your water is the correct temperature, putting it in a clap pot isn’t going to make it WARMER. What’s more valid is the fact that green tea has a delicate flavor which can be a problem since yixing “steals” the flavor from tea for the first several uses. I say give it a try though. Your tea, your rules!

Another option would be to consider an unglazed pot such as this Kyusu Tokoname teapot from Mighty Leaf Tea. This teapot is recommended for greens and other delicate teas. Might be a good alternative to an Yixing teapot for your green tea. Good luck!
