Gall bladder blues

Last year I had my gallbladder, appendix, and a section of my small intestine taken out all at once (I did an Epic Fail Billy Goat Impersonation and ate a Wrong Thing, namely the blister pack square around my iron tablet.) I have had no complications since the surgery from tea or anything else. I know some people have issues with eating fats after gallbladder removal, but I’ve never heard anything about issues with tea. I’d bet you’ll be just fine with tea.

Gaaaaaaaaaah!!!! that’s horrible!! I still have my appendix, but I pretty much had the same surgery as you, without the eating something. did your “fatty apron” attack? I didn’t even know about that thing til this surgery’s explanation from the doctor!

Well, it was an adventure! Mostly I had pain. They kept telling me it was likely some kind of acid/heartburn problem. I kept telling them it felt nothing like heartburn, and was down lower. So we tried an acid blocker, until things got suddenly way worse about three weeks later and I made a second ER trip. Some docs thought it was gallbladder, which we’d been watching for several years, but had never found any stones. Some docs were hedging bets on appendix. Some were just baffled. So I signed the form for exploratory surgery, knowing they could easily find nothing. Turned out everybody was right to some extent. It wasn’t the gallbladder or appendix that was causing the problem, but they were bad anyway, so along with fixing the rupture, out they went. I don’t know how I managed not to rupture my esophagus. On the upside, I now have a $50,000 beverage mug. It may not be insulated, but it is double-walled, so it’s nice for holding iced tea. :)

I’m glad you’re doing better, and hope your recovery goes smoothly and all is very well soon.

Had mine removed and I asked my doctor about drinking tea. He said as long as my tea is not loaded with copious amounts of fat or oil, drinking tea should be fine. So after the removal of my gall bladder and quick recovery, I went back to my daily routine of drinking my favorite Darjeeling, Oolong, and Rooibos teas.

Hope you have a quick recovery so you can resume brewing your favorite teas.

how does a tea become full of copious amounts of fat or oil anyway?

Yak butter?

blech. usually rancid yak butter from what I remember.

Some of those fancy blends with chocolate bits or coconut can get pretty oily :P

but not what I would call ‘copious amounts’ though, just a film usually.

Agree…though sometimes if I let one of them get cold it certainly feels copious, blech!

It was just a joke. I’ve never had any tea with fat or oil and I don’t think I ever will have any tea with fat or oil. I don’t know of any tea containing fat or oil. Therefore, drink all tea you want and no worries.

Thank you everyone for your response to my gall bladder surgery question….as it turns out I also had major intestinal surgery, so I guess I got a BOGO at the hospital! I’m just now starting with 1 cup and 1 resteep a day of tea, and so far (besides my taste buds being off a bit from massive amounts of drugs, I think) it’s been gooooooood. :) I’ll be back up posting again as soon as my palate is off the delaudid and percocet residual train wreck that it’s on…. THANK YOU again!!!

I had a very complicated gallbladder surgery 10 years ago and could always drink green tea after, I found I have to moderate the amount of black tea I drink but pu er tea seems to sooth some of the extra upsets I’ve gotten over time. My gb was necrotic though not stones so I may be a bit different.

It’s amazing how many people have had this surgery! I’m glad that we’ve all managed to get tea back into our diets! Has anyone else had trouble with their palate changing? I’m still not able to taste some notes that I know are there in my favorite teas….mostly the bottom notes. Is there a way to speed the healing of my tastebuds??
