NaNoWriMo 2014

SOOOON! I think I’m going to start writing at midnight to get a head start. November is going to be a busy month for me, but I’d like to get my novel down.

That’s my plan as well. I’d like to write the prologue, however many words that turns out to be
happy NaNoWriMo!!!

Past the 10k word mark, how’s everyone doing?

I’m rolling pretty good – more words than I though I’d be cranking out as I’m a day ahead in count. There is just something about the story I’m working on that makes me feel so excited while I type it out.

I’ve discovered I really need to switch to solo tea pot drinking or get a tea kettle next to my desk. I’ve been drinking mostly pu’er and oolong with a tiny tea table, and getting water constantly for it has been annoying.

Doing alright! I’m keeping my word count up. I’m hoping to get a little leeway over the weekend.
I like a little individual tea pot by me when I’m reading, and I’m blasting through the teas!

I pulled myself together yesterday and got 2.5k out, so now I’m on track. The stupid thing is I usually make sure I have a week off in November for this very purpose and to try and get as far ahead as I can, but now it’s back to work on Monday and I’m only just on track with just under 12k. Hm. So much for leeway for the rest of the month.

I’ve discovered, though, that my story isn’t actually so much story as it is world building. Once I accepted this and treated it as what it is, it started flowing much easier. So now I’m really just world building. I have notes on races of people, on geography, on the fever plague and what it does and so on and so forth. I’ve never taken this approach before, but I expect eventually some sort of story might emerge from it all somehow. I’ve also got some fairly clear thoughts about some individual scenes that I’ll try and get those down as well and fill in the gaps later.

It occurred to me late last night that this is exactly what Veronica Roth advised trying in her pep talk letter if one got stuck. :)

Yeah, I totally related to the veronica roth post as well, & I loved the mountain illustration, that was actually really what I needed to see. I hadn’t written anything in a few days, but last night I got in a few thousand words, so I’m sitting at 7211, not where I intended to be by now, but better than 24 hours ago. I built a world in Part one, now I’m on to part 2, which takes place across the country, so I get to build another world, LOL.

My sons asked me what this years novel was about. Previous Nanos have been fantasy/scifi, but this one is like a chic flick…when I tried to give them a brief synopsis, it was obviously boring to them. And it does feel a little lame, in a way, but oh well… I’m gonna enjoy it anyway, let it draw me in, cast the yarrow sticks, & see what happens, LOL.

I’m also lagging behind – stupid Week 2 wall hit early! And my region (Toronto) does a mentorship thing so I’m frantically telling my little mentees to do as I say and not as I do. But it’s the weekend, hopefully I’ll get enough banged out to put myself ahead.

I’m at that point where I feel like I should be doing more to move the plot forward and less world-building . . . but this is my novel and if I have thirty chapters of world building and one chapter of action, so be it! Stuff will happen when it happens.

Hello fellow Wrimos! We’ve hit the middle of November. How is it going?

I hate to be the first to tank, but I’ve sort of lost my motivation. Only being able to type effectively with one hand, coupled with several days in a row of not being able to find time to write will do that to you. And now my schedule is starting to get crazy. I hope everyone else sticks it out!

40k word check in!

Uggg. I’ve been behind due to November being crazy. I’m lucky I still have plenty of content to get through but not enough time to write and it looks like I need to write 3k words a day to finish, eeeep!

Oh dear. :( I’m at 37K or so at the moment, so also somewhat behind. I might be able to get it done though. I’ve got Wednesday and the weekend to try and get an extra load of words in, but it would be lovely if validation wasn’t just before bedtime on the 30th with my fingers crossed! O.o

I’ve got some more writing to do tonight (1k) and I’ll still be on track. By the skin of my teeth, though.

Its December! Any Nanowrimo winners out there? I made it, but it was a near thing.
And, no matter how many words you wrote in November, congratulations! I hope to see you all again in the next mad shuffle towards a novel.

Aww, man! I wish I had seen this thread a month ago. Steepster has been my only refuge between Word sprints.
Rosehips: I made it to 50k, without a moment to spare. I took a total of four days off, and I managed to not lose my job, or my family and friends. Which is an accomplishment in of itself :)
