Short-Term Puerh Storage

I know that puerh storage is a topic that’s been beat to death, and yet the beatings continue. So please forgive another thread on the topic, but I do need some suggestions, if possible, tea friends! Bonus points for pics and links :p

I need some (specific) ideas for short-term, easily accessible storage. For example, a friend mentioned that they store some cakes in old bamboo steamers. Well I figured I’d buy one to try it, but not only does it have an odor (which may dissipate, not sure), but it only holds 4 cakes and cost $20.

Has anyone tried using fabric storage cubes, with a lid? Or a lidded basket?

Here are my parameters: breathable, inexpensive, attractive, lightweight, odor-free, easily accessible. I want to drink these teas, not spend hours looking for that one cake! My preference is to find something that I can sit on top of the buffet cabinet in my dining room. Do not be alarmed about dining room odors. The last time that room saw a meal was months ago!

“Pumidor’ time. Can you pick up a used non running mini fridge anywhere cheap? Airtight , odor resistant interior, food safe shelving and easy to see whats inside. Just clean it well and air it a few days and let it roll. Later on you can upgrade it with a humidification unit.

Mrmo!!!! LOL. I’m not ready for the pumidor yet. My house is small… where the heck would I put that? I do admit to considering tea storage when I think about my next house. Ha!

Now that I think about it… you don’t live that far away. Maybe I will bring all my pu to your place for storage! :p

Mini fridge dorm room size. I may soon need more myself 3 and growing. Only 1 full size one though. if I add another I may be storing at your place! :P

Maybe we should just buy some property as living quarters for tea addicts who get kicked out by their significant others for too much tea and have no place to go. I doubt any of them would care how many pumidors you have. :)

I bought relatively small cardboard boxes from www.uline.com for much of my puerh storage. By buying boxes I got a blank box to write the contents on and uniform size so they either fit in my Ikea cabinet or stack neatly. They may not be pretty but they work. I also built a pumidor out of a mini fridge but had to buy a new one. Used mini fridges are just not all that available as people just throw them out when they break. They don’t think it worth trying to sell one as almost no one in their right mind would buy a non working mini fridge. I can only think of one use for one, a tea Pumidor.

I use a cabinet similar to this for storage. They no longer sell the exact model I have, but this is essentially it minus the doors. The model I have has no odor from varnish or paint. If you get one go to Ikea because the new model could have a varnish with an odor.

I’m not quite ready to go with the cardboard, unless I can’t find anything prettier. I think I’d use that for longer term storage, but I would really love to find something attractive for the teas I drink often.

I love that cabinet you linked, A! It looks like it would fit some fabric cubes in the open sections maybe?

I don’t know what the doors are made of. Mine is basically the same but no doors. I have a picture on my instagram page somewhere.

Actually, now that you mention it IKea sells fabric cubes but they are not sealed. I have a couple that I use to store things other than Puerh.

Yunnan sourcing has these bags pretty cheap.

Only on China site though. I use these in the “pumidor” and group like/same age teas together.

Kallax shelves are great. They’re a redesign of the Expedit. They’re all made of particle board with veneers, no paint or varnish, so no smells. The fabric cubes you can buy for them are nice too.

I also use cardboard boxes but not worried about being pretty, so much :)

I’m using cardboard boxes. I have to admit checking the attic for the dorm fridge I used in grad school, but I’m sure my wife would go nuts if I tried to set up a pumidor.

Sars in Chinatown in Toronto they sell unglazed yixing cannisters for this purpose. Something a little like thishttp://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Tea-canisters-Yixing-tea-PU-er-tea-cans-sealed-canisters-tea-caddy-tea-caddy/522549_1154623249.html. I also just saw this http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Hot-Sale-Free-Shipping-1-PCS-Woolden-Tea-Packing-Natural-Wooden-Puer-Tea-Cask-Top-Grade/2050547730.html.

Getting a large Yixing container on ALiexpress is an idea too. They sell them quite large. I have been tempted to buy one to put next to the large Yixing container I have. It holds about 25 cakes or so. You can’t find the big ones on EBay and buying from Taobao is risky because you would have to use an agent and take the shipping risk, a big risk.

I’ve seen some in Chinatown across from the Lucky Moose Grocery Store for under $20.00(cash only). Not as elaborate but a red yixing type clay with a simple pattern.

Sil, the store I’m thinking of is on an upper level.when you go in they have one or two aisles and a back room. The caddies are in the back room. They also had glass Gaiwans for $2.00.

I love those! Gotta have one, gotta have one, gotta have one!!!!!

Omg are you referring to the ones with two lids and very simple looking? I bought two… I think they were only a toonie or something LOL!

There are smaller canisters like that for sure. They had some very large ones that were more expensive. If its the same store, they have some very affordable teaware. I need to go back at some point. I want a smaller gaiwan and yes they were 2$. The most I spent on one there was 5.:-). I haven’t been there in a little while.

bumping this for myself so that i remember to look at this…hopefully this week

Hi Sil. The place I mentioned above is where I bought the canisters in this PIC. It is on the north side of dundas and there is a 99¢ sign above it. The cannisters were towards the back. Across the street is the herb depot. They have both puerh casks ( those leather bound trunk looking things and larger cannisters that hold cakes. The knee high one was 88$. They have a much bigger one holding Sheng cakes but it’s for sale. They also have some pretty but pricier teaware. I bought my tea boat at o store on North side Dundas that sells iPhone cases and jade. I bought thesehttp://instagram.com/p/xr8qQJGKzu/ at a store that had a dollar store sign above it the entrance is a small shop that sells tablet and smart phone cases then you go downstairs. They have a variety of qualities and types of pots. They are very cheap. Some are obviously machine made, some seem like student pieces, some are very nice. On spadina I have bought larger gaiwan at the tap phong store. I bought the tea table in the photo above at a store at the lower end of China Town on the east side which said A&J trading company they had three or four choices but they are all lighter wood. Hope that helps a little:-). Have fun.

If you live anywhere near a college or university, alot of mini-fridges are sold by students cheap at the end of a school year (may-june). They’re too big to transport home and too troublesome to buy storage for…. and the freshmen that would buy then don’t come until august. Check craigslist or community sale pages around that time. Technically they’re still operable, but you don’t have to plug it in. (Or hang around when they all move out of the dorms. Usually some are just abandoned by the dumpsters.)

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I am leaning toward going with some baskets with lids. It’s been harder than I thought to get ideas by just searching online, so I appreciate all the ideas and links. :)
