1792 Tasting Notes

Thanks to VariaTEA for sharing some of this with me! The name instantly grabbed my attention, and I was hoping for Turkish Delight or something along those lines. And it basically is. First sip was candied rose, but the more sips I took, the more the cherry came out.

The base is a little on the dry side but I like it here. The only drawback is the more you sip on it, the more the cherry starts to morph into a cherry cough syrup note. Part of me still wants more, and this reminds me of how I’ve been meaning to order from this company for quite a while. Despite the cough syrup note, I can still see myself enjoying this every once in a while.

VariaTEA

I think this is my favorite tea from them (or maybe Ombrelle de Papier?) so I am glad you enjoyed it.

Sil

ombrelle! i vote for that one! not this one! blaaaaa

VariaTEA

Haha I still have both in my cupboard. Plus I was nice and tossed some Ombrelle de Papier into the TTB. I am spreading the love :)

Fjellrev

Oh yeah, I was eyeing that one when I was browsing the site. Sounds great too. Their herbals look very unique too.

TheTeaFairy

Love Camellia Sinensis, their store in Montreal is fabulous! They used to have close to no flavoured teas at all but they’ve expanding that part of the business. And they have some of the best quality straight teas I’ve had.
Damn cough syrup though, I really hope Stacy can come up with a decent cherry tea soon, I’m this close to ask for a custom blend…wonder why it’s so difficult to render properly…

Fjellrev

I’m glad they’re adding they’re expanding the flavoured tea section. And I’m stumped on the cherry too. This got even more cough syrupy as it cooled, unfortunately. Stacy ought to take a stab at it, for sure!

VariaTEA

I don’t get cough syrup from this but I tend to drink it pretty fast.

Sip down! Hilariously enough, the last cup was the best. I let the water cool down quite a bit before steeping, plus I didn’t bother timing it. Turned out pretty good! Definitely got more of the flavouring in this. I drank it straight. It’s still doesn’t ring Irish cream cheesecake to me, though.

drank Ma Passion by Nina's Paris
1792 tasting notes

Thanks to the wonderful VariaTEA for sending me a sample of Ma Passion! I’m a sucker for passionfruit. If they weren’t so expensive, I’d eat one every single day.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t believe that this is a ceylon! My first sip was, “Huh? Smokiness? But, but…” This just has to be a keemun or something.

There’s a gentle fruitiness in the background, but I can’t help but be distracted by the slightly smoky base. But that said, I’m so glad I had a chance to try this because had I ordered before trying it, I would have automatically picked up a pouch of this, being a lover of passionfruit and all. And then I would have gotten the pouch and been all confused about life.

VariaTEA

I saw “Ma Passion” and my name and was getting annoyed because I swore I liked this post already and commented on it. Then I realized I liked/commented on Roswell Strange’s post for this tea.

Anyways, I am glad I could save you from buying a whole pouch and then subsequently being disappointed. I have been lucky to get to sample almost all the teas from Nina’s before committing to a whole pouch so I am glad I could help someone in that way :)

Fjellrev

Yeah, seriously! It’s why I’m so grateful, and I’m looking forward to trying the others. Then it’ll be Amazon time. :)

VariaTEA

Since, despite my initial excitement, they did not actually open an online store :P

Hopefully you find something you like. It is interesting because you and Roswell Strange had pretty different reactions to this.

Fjellrev

Haha totally understandable. I got excited when I saw the announcement too. I just don’t understand why they went that route because it doesn’t really change anything. Had I known, I would have screwed it and ordered from Amazon a long time ago.

Hmm, I wonder if Roswell likes smoky teas, or picks up on them easily then? I seem to be quite sensitive to them.

VariaTEA

I liked this one and didn’t really get smokiness but when you don’t like something, you tend to be hyperaware of its presence. And I am not sure why they went that route. I have been fortunate to just go buy directly from them though I know Courtney ordered from them and didn’t find it bad.

VariaTEA

Plus, having waited, you now get to try some of the teas before ordering.

drank Pumpkin Chai by DAVIDsTEA

Surprise sip down! I kind of feel like I almost never drank this, yet somehow reached the bottom of my 50g pouch relatively quickly. Go figure!

I had this again since I’m not in the mood for anything in particular. It was better this time around, possibly because I let it steep a little longer than usual, and use half and half to even out the base. It had a better balance this time around. It seemed more cheesecake-y, but I still get no Irish cream.

I’m sickened by the fact that it’s already 6:30pm and I’ve done no school work as of yet. Days have been passing by and I’ve been spending the majority of the time searching for places to live. I’m caught up in a rather messed up situation and I can’t stop thinking about it. Ugh!

keychange

Uggh. I’ve had my share of messed up situations, and hope you feel better about it soon. Tea, a good night’s rest, and good company (and some alone time) can do wonders.

tigress_al

Good luck in the home search!

Fjellrev

Thanks to the both of you!

drank Vanilla Cream by Bayswater Tea Co.
1792 tasting notes

I had this last night with some Jack Daniels, half and half, and a pinch of brown sugar. See, I’m not a fan of JD, and I’m trying to get rid of it since I have half a bottle left, so I’m thinking of ways to do that. I figured a vanilla tea would go well with it and achieve that vanilla bouronesque feel.

I don’t know. There’s something about the JD that I don’t like. I did taste the vanilla flavour from the tea in the background, which was nice, but I’m going to have to find other ways of using it up.

Daddyselephant

Send it to meeeeee. I’m from Tennessee and JD is what I keep around to remind me of my home .

Fjellrev

Haha I so totally would. Maybe I’ll make another Bourbon Walnut pie since that is why I bought it last year. :)

drank Pink Passionfruit by DAVIDsTEA
1792 tasting notes

Double sip down (alongside S&V’s Berry Nice)! It’s bittersweet. For the longest time, I was head over heels with this one. Ripped through a good 200g in the end. Even though I still liked it up until the very end, I started finding it too sweet for me over the past couple months.

But it’s still super fantastic in my books.

drank Berry Nice by Simpson & Vail
1792 tasting notes

Wow, I actually finished this! I was worried that I’d never get through the 100g since it’s not that great, and figured my only review on this would repel people from wanting to get any from me. But I made it, largely thanks to David’s Pink Passionfruit, with which I have been blending this.

If you like really sweet fruity drinks, this may actually be up your alley. I hardly ever put sugar in my drinks, and like sugary ones for that matter, so I don’t really speak for the majority.

TheTeaFairy

I like a little maple syrup in iced tea, but I’m with you, hate anything overly sweet. My worst nightmare is Eight Candles from Della Terra! Not that it’s a bad tea but just not “my” cup of tea!

Fjellrev

Maple is a great idea! I’ve been wondering what I could add to cold matcha lattes besides honey or agave. I haven’t tried Eight Candles but knew just by the description and picture to stay far away haha. That Anti V-Day one was bad enough!

drank Coconut Macaroon by Simpson & Vail
1792 tasting notes

Final sip down on this one, too. Cold brew, and I got a lot of cacao nibs this time around. In flavour, that is. It tasted like I was drinking them. It was even stronger than the coconut. The first few sips were kind of bitter, but then after my taste buds adapted, I think it identified that slight bitterness as the cacao.

This is one of the few S&V teas that I would reorder if I were to make another order in the first place, but I feel like there aren’t enough repurchase-worthy ones to truly justify ordering from S&V again.

Three pouches later and I can now say that it’s a sip down. Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish and I really aren’t ending on a good note for a number of reasons:

1. I had almost three cups worth of dry leaf left but wanted to get it over with, so I made a Nordic mug’s (two cups worth). Despite brewing it at cooler temperature and not too long, this last bit has turned out bitter.

2a. These reblends in general have gone quite downhill. It is not at all how it used to be. No matter how I brew it, I can’t get those creamy and pastry notes any longer.

2b. Didn’t work as a cold brew either. All base and almost no blueberry. But it may be a reblend issue.

2c. The resteep isn’t what it used to be. The second steep used to be heavenly. The base would mellow out and the creamy and pastry notes would pop. No additives necessary. Again, most likely a reblend issue.

Unfortunately, this tea stopped being a 100 about 1.5 pouches ago, but I’ll leave it as is. I truly believe my tastes didn’t change when it comes to this tea. Oh well, onto better things!

TheTeaFairy

So sorry this one let you down :-(
As you said, on to better things, there are tons of succulent teas awaiting for some Fjellrev love!!

MissB

I’m also having problems with (many) of the reblends. I’m wondering where the disconnect lies…

Fjellrev

It’s no loss either way. :)

It could be a number of things: different base, different flavouring components, blending method, etc. Too many, really! But that said, I hope you don’t have too much to work through, MissB.
