33 Tasting Notes

Tea Bags - Naturally Decaffeinated from ShopRite
65

Light and watery but pleasant, inoffensive taste. No bitter or foul aspect. Very similar to Lipton decaffeinated tea bags. At about $2.50 per 48 tea bags (purchased October 28, 2012), a good value. The box came wrapped in cellophane and the tea is reasonably fresh and will so remain if kept in a sealed container.

Does not compare in taste to TeeGschwendner (www.teachmerchants.com) decaffeinated loose leaf teas or to Davidson’s Organic decaffeinated loose leaf teas. Seems to contain less caffeine than these, however. Convenient and cheap.

Prince of Wales from Twinings
65

I hoped that brewing this tea for 3 minutes and 45 seconds instead of my usual 2 minutes and 45 seconds would overcome its watery taste. It did not.

Tea Room Blend Leaf Tea from Taylors of Harrogate
83

The tea is cut and granular and so doesn’t look like most loose leaf teas. It has a strong aroma, and makes a good, full-bodied brew after just two minutes of brewing (with boiling water in a pre-heated teapot). The label says it’s a mix of Indian and African teas, but it tastes like a classic Ceylon tea, similar to Lipton “Brisk” tea.

Not too bad!

Caffeine Free Herbal Tea from Celestial Seasonings
82

A mixture that includes blackberry leaves and chicory. A full-bodied, complex, smooth, slightly burnt flavor – Celestial Seasonings has made a great, unconventional herbal tea!

China Golden Yunnan Organic from TeaGschwendner
65

A smooth, balanced cup of tea. I found this tea, although good, to lack in flavor, richness and complexity.

Prince of Wales from Twinings
65

The best Chinese teas I have had have a rich, full-bodied, almost earthy taste. This tea, on the other hand, is mild and watery.

For a great blend of Oolong and Keemun tea, I recommend All Day Breakfast by the Republic of Tea (http://www.republicoftea.com/product.aspx?p=V00555).

Orange Blossom Hibiscus Infusion from Lipton
50

Tastes mostly like rosehips and hibiscus. This tea has no noticeable orange flavor. Lacks the subtlety and flavor of great orange herbal teas, such as Hain Celestial Group’s Mandarin Orange Spice.

Darjeeling No. 6 Second Flush FOP from TeaGschwendner
50

TeaGschwendner included this tea as a sample in a recent order. But when I opened the foil envelope, it had already gone stale. If that’s not true, then it didn’t have much flavor to begin with – hard to believe, for a Darjeeling from TeaGschwendner. The dry tea has no fragrance.

Ceylon Tea Bank Estate FBOPF Ex. Spl. from Upton Tea Imports
90

A really good, classic cup of Sri Lankan black tea. This tea has a light, crisp taste, a bracing quality, and the dry sweetness of wine. I drank it without milk, lemon or any other additive and it was great.

I have never had a cup of “Ceylon” tea that is not astringent. Thankfully, this one has less astringency than most.

Melon Citrus Mint Infusion from Lipton
67

The product I bought was probably the same, but the packaging was a little different. The large white letters on the front of the box say “Melon Citrus Mint,” not “Melon Citrus Mint Infusion.” There was no French caption following the English words.

Overall, a fairly good herbal tea, fairly well balanced. The mint is subtly noticeable, definitely not overpowering. Unlike many fruit teas, it is not sour.

I think Lipton has done something wrong in marketing this tea, though. The ingredients list is long, but one of the most present ingredients is chamomile. Lipton does not clearly indicate that the tea has chamomile in the name of the tea or on the packaging. Chamomile really is a soporific, and Lipton should do more to make consumers aware that the tea has chamomile, so that no one takes chamomile without wanting to.

Herbal Revive Tea from Twinings
82

Unlike many fruit-flavored herbal teas, this tea has a smooth, subtle taste, neither sour nor artificial. The ginseng sharpens the brew, adding depth and complexity to what would otherwise be much like a German früchtetee. Be prepared for the stimulating mental effects of ginseng; this tea does not contain a very large amount, but neither is the dose small.

Foxtrot from Adagio Teas
80

There’s nothing like a hot cup of tea bursting through with the cool flavor of mint. The spearmint in this tea seems very fresh (it’s dried but not stale), and very intense. The rooibos adds a bit to the flavor, and dyes the brew dark red. While the chamomile flowers can hardly be tasted at all, you might, as if assassinated by ninjas, find yourself the victim of their soporific power.

Decaffeinated Earl Grey Tea Bags from Taylors of Harrogate
79

Really good — it’s unassuming but tasty! The bergamot, which has a spicy citrus flavor, is added to the tea in a very generous quantity. However, it isn’t completely overpowering — with this tea, unlike far too many flavored decaffeinated teas, you can actually taste the tea leaves.

When brewed for two minutes, it gets very bitter and astringent, and doesn’t make a good cup of tea at all. But brew it with boiling water for just one minute, and it’s great!

Each teabag is individually wrapped in a sealed, airtight plastic envelope. This should keep the tea fresh for a very long time.

It’s decaffeinated by the CO-2 process, according to the packaging.

Lemon Berry Breeze from Gevalia
18

“Ingredients: Hibiscus flowers, licorice root, natural flavor, soy lecithin. Contains: Soy.” “Product of Indonesia.”

I bought this tea mail-order from Gevalia. It’s a strange-tasting, artificial tea. Imagine strong hibiscus tea blended with a weird, candy-like berry flavor. It’s quite sour. It’s not a relaxing drink. I can’t recommend it.

Decaf Apricot from Adagio Teas
49

This tea begins well. A full and rich peach-apricot flavor covers the faintly apparent taste of plain black tea. But as you continue to sip, the whole experience is overcome by bitterness. Soon, all that remains is a bitter and astringent aftertaste, and then your tongue and mouth begin to feel dried-out. Not recommended.

Darjeeling Tea from Twinings
94

Light in color, light in flavor. Astonishingly good for something you can buy at the supermarket. Darjeeling tea is almost never strong, but sometimes a rousting and nearly spicy flavor emerges from the small, lightly cured second-flush leaves. This is not one of those Darjeelings. But it is very good. It has a complex, delicate, floral flavor, is free from bitterness, and should accompany those contemplative moments that you claim for yourself over the course of the day.

I recommend drinking this tea plain after brewing it in a pre-heated mug with very hot water for a very short time (~2 minutes).

However prepared, it will disappoint those who prefer strong tea.

Each teabag is individually wrapped in a material that is not quite plastic and not quite paper. This arrangement succeeds in keeping the tea fresh for a year or two.

Darjeeling Tea from Twinings

Mandarin Orange Spice from Celestial Seasonings
94

A stand-out herbal tea. It shuns the hibiscus and citric acid that make so many herbal teas tangy or even sour, and still achieves a strong-tasting, darkly colored brew. It is very smooth and never bitter. The orange flavor comes together nicely and is natural and low-key. The abundant spices give it the character of mulled cider or mulled wine.

Pure Darjeeling Tea from St. Dalfour
80

This is a bagged tea product with two unusual characteristics: (1) the bags are not folded over and stapled like most other bagged black teas in the U.S. (2) each bag contains an unusually generous amount of tea.

And it is a rich, mellow tea. Really very good. The flavor is very plain. The brew is neither spicy, nutty, tangy nor sweet. But the quality of this tea is uncompromising for a bagged tea. Good with milk or without.

The bags are individually foil-wrapped, and have strings.

African Red Bush from Tazo
86

A good rooibos blend. Tangy, but not to excess. The rooibos flavor is filled out by the lemon balm and lemon verbena. It is a complex, relaxing and very slightly fruity tea.

Note: it is not as tangy as the presence of “citric acid” among the ingredients would lead one to suspect.

Awake- Filterbag from Tazo
74

A strong black tea that is not bitter if brewed for two minutes or less with boiling water and a pre-heated mug. It has a clean, classic taste, not unlike PG Tips. It seems like either a Ceylon/Assam blend, or a Kenyan tea. A tasty, good brew, with milk or without. Surpasses most bagged tea available at the grocery store.

In my eyes, Tazo’s claim that the taste of caramel and black cherries is apparent in the tea is false.

CO2 Decaffeinated English Breakfast Tea from Harrisons & Crosfield Teas Inc.
51

Were this not a decaf tea, I would have given it a lower rating.

It is a serviceable but unimpressive decaffeinated black tea. It gets bitter when steeped for just two minutes. But let it steep for less time, and the flavor is not very well developed and the brew is watery.

Yet the flavor that remains is the good flavor of a dark English Breakfast Ceylon or Assam tea.

It does not have any of the sour or artificial qualities of the worst decaffeinated black teas. It is better than decaffeinated Lipton, Tetley or PG Tips.

It is very similar to “Twinings English Breakfast Tea, Decaffeinated.” http://steepster.com/teas/twinings/2961-english-breakfast-decaf

Darjeeling Premium Decaf from TeaGschwendner
Blueberry Rooibos from Rishi Tea
52

This tea tastes artificial and very fruity; and, unfortunately, the taste of the Rooibos is overpowered by the other ingredients. The resulting brew is intense and flavorful, and slightly tangy.

The blend noticeably includes many real dried blueberries.

From the product’s label: “Ingredients: 100% Organic Fair Trade Certified rooibos, 100% Organic blueberries, 100% Organic schizandra berries, 100% Organic hibiscus, natural blueberry and strawberry flavors.”
