drank Tamarind Pop by Butiki Teas
148 tasting notes

Rayn and I tried this last night and both gave it the verdict of YUM.

It tastes very much like a tamarind jarritos (mexican soda) with a little hint of vanilla. I’m pretty sensitive to sweetness and thought it was just enough sweet for me sans sugar. Rayn drained his cup in record time. Two thumbs up!

Oh, also it smells WONDERFUL.

oh yum I love tamarind jarritos! Glad to hear it’s not too sweet

I picked up a sample of this awhile back, as I fell in love with the Jun Chiyabari estate tea from David’s. This is a superb black, with robust toasty notes while being reminiscent of a darjeeling. It had just enough slight bite and fruity flavor to it. This actually reminded quite a bit of the Laoshan black, if the laoshan didn’t have as much of a malty base (I still like laoshan black better). Excellent tea.

drank Black Pearl by Mandala Tea
148 tasting notes

I am busy Steepsters, oh so very busy! Lots and lots of school work and library work. Mostly I wanted to write to say I haven’t forgotten about Steepster or tea, even if it escapes my memory to write tasting notes lately. Rayn and our roommate and I signed the agreement on a new apartment today and I am very excited about it. It’s in a great part of the city and literally right next to Rayn’s older brother (who we are very close to).

I’ve filled my thermos up with Black Pearl the last couple of days and it remains a favorite black comfort tea for me. I’ve always liked drinking tea when it’s still very hot, and this one feels like it’s warming my chest when I take a sip straight from the thermos.

Bonnie

You’re right!I liked the sample of tea you sent me!

Claire

Glad to hear it Bonnie! :)

Garret

Claire and Bonnie. Awesome women.

Bonnie

Garret, you are too far away to tip!

This is pretty decent, and I really love a good keemun, but this blend does not live up to the pants-kicking the phrase “best with milk” suggested. For breakfast/at school thermos teas, I like a tea that’s supposed to be drank with milk, but without the milk. It has to be STRONG. This is maybe lifting some 20lb barbells. It’s got muscles but it isn’t buff.

I am sitting in the library right now, and there’s a group of girls near me being rather noisy. For a split second I debated throwing a pencil at them, and thought of the line in Moby Dick “it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off”. Apparently I need to go to sea.

Your self control is admirable, cap’n!

Michelle Butler Hallett

AHAHAHA! Ishmael forever!

I’m gonna look for that tea.

Claire

Michelle – last year I wrote a pretty long paper all about Ishmael’s identity in Moby Dick. I love that book. :)

KiwiDelight

That’s an excellent quote. I need that every time I feel like kicking someone in the pants whenever I studying in the library. Libraries. Are. Not. For. Hanging. Out. headdesk

There’s been a post office kerfluffle with the Malachi McCormick that Becky sent me (the tea is somewhere in the US – beyond that the post has no idea), so I picked this up at the grocery store to get me through mornings and fill up my thermos on weekdays.
It’s very tasty, and absolutely better than anything I expected from the grocery store. A lot of full leaves in this tin with a generous amount of golden tips. This tea is malty and sweet, and as I discovered one day very difficult to make bitter/astringent even if you forget it for awhile.

I also found out today that I got a 98% on my first linguistics test. :)

Alysha

Awesome score; congrats!

Claire

Thanks Alysha, I was really excited to see that score!

Ysaurella

Bravo Claire !

Becky

I’m so peeved about that missing box. I’m all for the Post Office, but this is just silly.

Claire

It’s definitely the longest I’ve ever had something missing in the mail. Or perhaps somewhere, right now, someone is thinking to themselves “my this Malachi McCormick is a good blend. And such a steal too!” And then they would cackle evilly to themselves.

Becky

And twirl the end of their waxed mustache, before returning to their task of steaming postmarked stamps off of envelopes for felonious purposes. Post thieves are the worst!

Terri HarpLady

Congrats on the high score Claire!

It’s been an exhausting week Steepsters! I’m very glad to say my body recovered from the hit-by-a-car fiasco, but then it promptly adopted a cold. Here’s hoping the next two weeks are much better.

This shu makes me so happy. The flavor is rich, woodsy, and sweet. I got 1oz of it in my last Mandala order and definitely need to snag a cake. I wish I could pick up more flavors in this but my review will have to suffice to say this one is a keeper (and a drinker).

CharlotteZero

I hadn’t read your post about getting hit by a car until now. I’m so sorry, but glad to hear you’re better! Did you ever report it?

Claire

I didn’t, I’m sad to say. I should have but ended up caving in to exhaustion.

CharlotteZero

It’s understandable. And unfortunately, it’s unlikely they’d ever find her even if you did report it. I hope she stays off the roads.

Terri HarpLady

I still can’t believe that happened to you, Claire! I’m glad you’re ok. Take care of yourself!!!

canadianadia

I hope you’re feeling better soon

Garret

I know of a special special collections librarian who will soon receive an entire cake of this tea!

Terri HarpLady

That’s one lucky person!

Claire

She is very lucky indeed. :) She even gets to sleep in tomorrow!

Sometimes I realized I’ve almost finished off a tea without posting a tasting note. This is one of those! I think that must mean I like it, but don’t have much to say about it. This pu doesn’t wow me, but it’s not offensive either. It reminds me of the kind of black teas I like to get for my thermos at school – not the really lovely stuff, but still far better than the teabagged crap they have on campus (which is not to say that all tea in teabags is bad, but the ones at my school certainly are).

I’m glad I tried the sample of this, as it’s a nice easy drinker. Probably won’t get a whole cake. That Xiaguan crane I got from Garret on the other hand…I need to post a note for that and I wish there was a lot more so I could horde it.

Garret

HI Claire! I’m glad you are digging the Xiaguan Crane tuo. How wonderful that we each have one now! Pretty dang good, isn’t it?

Claire

It’s really delicious! I love the Yong De cake as well.

This is so nice tonight. Really mellow and slightly haylike, but there’s a bit of sweetness here too. This almost smells like honey and wood to me.

I’ve debated posting anything about my day yesterday, but it feels good to air it out. While crossing the street yesterday morning, I got hit by a car. Some crazy lady just plowed into me when I was halfway through the crosswalk; she did not stop at the stop sign. Good news: I am okay. After she initially hit me I put out an arm against her hood, thinking she would see me, and when she continued to push me forward I threw myself backwards out of the way of her car. She drove away, never even looked at me or the various people that were honking at her, and she never stopped. I pulled a number of things in my shoulder and around my scapula, bruised my tailbone falling, and have bruises on my legs. Very thankfully, I am alive and not broken. The whole thing still feels really surreal and kind of like a far away movie.

It feels really wonderful right now to just rest and drink some tea.

Unbelievable, Claire!
I’m glad you’re ok. Did you report it? That gal shouldn’t be driving!

Sil

O my goodness. I’m so glad you’re ok. What a terrible thing to have happen

Lindsay

yowza. some people. glad to hear you’re ok

K S

Steepster was hanging on to post again. So you are now a day away from the car incident and I can imagine very sore. Recover quickly. Drink lots of tea. It seems to cure everything from what I read on other sites :)

Claire

Thanks for the good wishes!
Terri – I didn’t report it. When it happened I was in shock and ended up getting up and just walking to school. About a half hour later I realized it really hurt. At that point I got checked out by the doctor and called the police, but they said I had to go down to the station to be checked out, and I haven’t had the time/energy to go over there.
K S – Yes, I am very sore! I’m attempting to take it easy, and I am drinking lots of tea. :)

Terri HarpLady

I know in St. Louis they have cameras everywhere now days, which is an irritation, but the accident may be caught on film…
I know that I would never remember what the car looked like even, had I been in your circumstances. Just be gentle with yourself. Sending some good Reiki vibes your way!

ashmanra

Oh my gosh! I will be praying for you today! The soreness after something like that is always nasty!

Claire

Terri – I actually remember that it was a small black car, like a toyota corolla. The lady had long blonde hair and was young too. I have some time in the morning so I will probably try to stop by the station.

I’m happy to say that while I’m still quite sore and bruised, it’s getting better! And now I’m home and can drink puerh to my heart’s content. :)

canadianadia

That’s so scary. It’s so horrifying that you went through that, and it’s especially terrible that that she drove away. I hope your soreness and bruising heal quickly.

drank Organic Guranse by Butiki Teas

Another winner from Butiki!
Today was an earlyish day for me, Doctor’s appointment in the morning, and now I’m having some lunch before work. I’m sipping on this from my thermos.

I really like teas from Nepal, and this is not an exception. It’s Darjeeling-like without being astringent, very woody and tastes slightly like honey to me. It’s a wee bit on the malty side which is quite welcome today.

I like this too!

Donna A

Me too!

Butiki Teas

One of the things that I now love the most about this tea is something that Azzrian had mentioned to me and that I had not noticed initially. She mentioned that it has an almost bubbly or sparkling quality to it, in almost a soda way.

Sil

hmmmm i need to get some time to sit down and try this one. It’s in my cupboard but i’ve been too focused on getting through some of my older favourites heh.

Claire

Stacy – I’ll have to look out for that next time!

Stacy very kindly sent me a sample of this with my Butiki order, and it’s delicious! This has some really wonderful flavor for a young raw puerh. I was a bit surprised by the appearance of the leaves – they almost look like the little stickers that get stuck in your socks when you go on a hike. I did a quick rinse with this and started with a 10 second steep in my new (beautiful!) gaiwan. The flavor is slightly smoky, reminiscent of other young shengs but also very sweet. It tastes like oak and apricots at the same time. The soup is a pale yellow color and smells a bit like a nice fire (I mean that in a good way). I wonder how this would age?

Yesterday was Rayn and I’s 2nd annual Aquarium Day (observed). We went to the California Academy of Science on our first date, and later on we decided to go there around the same time every year. :)

ashmanra

Aw, sweet! I hope you had a great time!

Geoffrey Norman

I loved this stuff. Lasts quite a while, too. One batch o’ leaves will last about eight steepings or more.

Claire

I think I made it to seven steepings and then it was bed time!

I mostly drink straight tea, and some of my favorites are green teas and oolongs. I almost always have some sencha and tieguanyin in my tea cupboard (and if I run out, awesome, an excuse to buy tea). I do like some flavored teas, but can’t stand really sugary stuff so if it’s very sweet I probably won’t like it. I can’t drink milk so all my reviews are of tea without milk and sugar!
I’ve been getting into puerh the last few months.

Outside of Steepster I’m an English Lit major, and will FINALLY be graduating after the Fall 2013 semester. After that I plan on applying for graduate school to obtain a Master’s in Library Science. Currently I work as a student assistant in the Archives and Special Collections department of my school’s library.
I also like reading (of course) and playing video games when I have time for them.

I’m happy to send samples to anyone in the US or Canada. Just ask. :)
