Red Leaf Tea – Sample #5
30 May 2014, side-by-side comparison with Sample #6

Dry: Wow. This has a very dull and dark green colour, almost like moss. Grassy scent is very pronounced.

Straight: This matcha is so dark and so bitter. And I KNOW that my water wasn’t too hot since I legit waited so long and my thermometer read 170 and thats 5 degress less than recommended! Or at least, from what I’ve read, 175 is ideal temp, right?

Latte: Weak and bland, but at least the milk helps a little bit. Well actually, this as a latte isn’t that bad. I’ll just probably never drink it straight because… no. You know, I’ll probably just cook with this matcha. Throw it in my dough when I make my pasta, or like make cupcakes out of it! Sad to say that I really didn’t enjoy this all that much :(

My leg hurts so much that it’s come to the point where I decided to sit in my desk chair and have my roommates roll me around the apartment ahhaa :)

But it’s 10 minutes past midnight and I still have a LOT of stuff to do in preparation for finals week next week! Wanted a cup of tea, but it’s also tasting note #500 sooo my special Honey Dew tea in my Troy & Abed in the Morning mug it is! And it’s perfect since it’s caffeine-free :)

also can I point out that they FINALLY updated their flavour suggestions. Dang, that took a while.

Flavors: Honeydew, Melon

Boiling 8 min or more 4 g 12 OZ / 354 ML

YESSSSSS best mug ever.

Ahh yes. First cup of tea for the day because today was so freakin busy okay.
I didn’t get to my morning matcha so I was like falling asleep in class dang :/

But yeah. This is… okay. It’s very ginger-y and weird and ahh just drinking it to get rid of it

In other news, I think I pulled a muscle and I’m like limping all over the house right now.
I’ve got a midterm tomorrow and I barely studied.
I have lunch reservations for RKR, the student-run restaurant on campus (I’ll be taking that class next year!), and I’ve had those reservations for MONTHS now, and like half my party bailed on me today even when I asked them last week they said they’d be there.
I seem to be the only one who understands how to map for our anthro project and everyone’s emailing me and I’m like I HAVE OTHER THINGS TO TEND TO. GOODBYE.
I’m not even going to study for one of my midterms cuz I’ll need a 65% to pass that class with an A.
I have a nasty attitude when I get stressed out and I feel like everyone hates me because I don’t want to help them. Am v sorry. Going to tend to my needs first. kthxbai.

aww man i love this kombucha! it’s the one i always buy (if it’m not getting one from the tap) hahah

Student run restaurant? That sound so cool! Good look with finals!

I’m not the biggest fan of coconut, but this smelled more cake-y rather than coconut and ahhh such a wonderful dry leaf scent :)
Steeping, this takes on a light amber liquor, and the coconut does get more pronounced.
I really like how this has a slight vanilla flavour, and the coconut isn’t overpowering. I despise coconut, and I’m still trying coconut teas, and this one is definitely one of the better ones! Sorta hoped that the cake scent

Thank you QueenOfTarts for sending this my way!

Flavors: Coconut

4 min, 15 sec 3 g 8 OZ / 236 ML

You’re braver than I am. I generally skip anything that is at least called coconut something.

Ahh I forgot to thank QueenOfTarts for this sample!
Yeah, I never willingly buy anything with coconut or other flavours I’m not a fan of, but since it was given to me in a swap, it’s a chance for me to try something I probably would have never picked up :)

Took this from the TTTTB!

This was actually one that I didn’t sample, but I smelled it and it smelled sooo good so I just took it, hoping that my nose wasn’t playing with me. Crossing my fingers that this is a great tea!
Smells very green. Much like nori. Reminds me of that one green tea from December’s Steepster Select box; Karigace #22.
Opaque, light green liquor.
Slight vegetal taste, not as vegetal as other straight greens I’ve had and I really like this tea! Good job, nose. You’ve done well :)

Flavors: Grass, Spinach

195 °F / 90 °C 1 min, 0 sec 3 g 8 OZ / 236 ML

I really have enjoyed the kukicha that I’ve had before.

Dude. I’ve been wanting to try this tea for so long now! I actually bought it like a good 2 months or so ago when I did my massive DAVIDsTEA haul and this was on the top of my list!
It smells very very much like a nice oolong throughout. From dry to steeping. Ahh I love oolongs so much. I love how it has tones of green tea and tones of black. I love the smokiness/roasty smell of oolongs as well. And the fact that when they unravel, you see humongo leaves ahh I just love them so much!

Mmmm so nice and smooth. A slightly stronger roasted oolong taste compared to other oolongs I’ve had. It tastes roasted, jut light and fluffy. Ahh I really like this so much! Definitely one of the better oolongs I’ve tasted :)

Flavors: Caramel

200 °F / 93 °C 4 min, 0 sec 3 g 12 OZ / 354 ML

I didn’t like this one. I noticed that they’ve recently started adding flavoring to it. Is your flavored or unflavored? (You supposedly can tell by the ingredients listed on the bag. If it doesn’t list flavor, it’s from before they added the flavoring.)

“Chinese oolong tea from the Wuyi Mountains, natural flavouring.”

So I’m guessing it’s flavoured. Dang. Ahh well, I still really like it :)

That’s the important part. Mine is unflavored, which means it’s older, but I ordered it less than a month ago. Crazy.

I love oolongs too! I love watching the leaves expand in my french press, I find it endlessly fascinating!

Red Leaf Tea – Sample #3
30 May 2014, side-by-side comparison with Sample #4

Dry: Hmm.. not as vibrant as prrevious matchas. A bit brighter than 4 though.

Straight: Dark green liquor. GRASSY AND BITTER :/ Dang. My water may have been too hot since my other matcha was very bitter as well. It was at 180! Ahh well, 5° may have been a bit too much. I’ll see how it tastes as a latte

Latte: Hmm… did’t do that much of a difference? No bitterness, but the sweetness of the milk was just not present. Added sugar and made a bit of a difference, but the other cup is still significantly better.

Red Leaf Tea – Sample #4
30 May 2014, side-by-side comparison with Sample #3

Dry: Not as vibrant as previous matchas.

Straight: Dark green liquor. Grassy and bitter as well. Ahh my water might have been a bit too hot? Ahh well, I’ll see how well it does when I add milk to it.

Latte: So SO much better. I the milk definitely helped; the bitterness was replaced by nice and sweet flavours. No need to sweeten :)

Red Leaf Tea – Sample #1
30 May 2014, side-by-side comparison with Sample #2

Dry: Nice vibrant green colour. A bit less aromatic as compared to Sample #2

Straight: Just tastes like watered down green tea? Decent, but I’ve had better.

Latte: Ahh well, this is how I like my matchas! It’s still okay though. The matcha base was a bit bland, even with a touch of sugar for an attempt to bring the flavours out more. The vanilla almond milk helped bring it out, but there’s only so much you can do with an okay matcha base.

Teas in my cupboard are in my personal collection.
I’m always looking forward to reducing my stash so swappable teas are listed here:
(last updated: 11 Apr 2014)
Likes/dislikes here:

Tea rating guide:
100-90: Best thing to ever touch my mouth and I want more. Restocking is a must
89-80: Love this tea. Restock if I can
79-70: Decent tea. Neither love nor hate.
69-60: I won’t be upset when it runs out. I’ll drink it but won’t restock.
59-30: I’ve done whatever I can to like this tea and I’ll finish the cup.
29-10: I’ve done whatever I can to like this tea. It may or may not have gone down the sink…
9-below: Let’s not even hide it. This definitely went down the drain.

I love tea.
I drink it.
I log it.
I have a good time.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

I first discovered my love for tea with Jasmine because that’s all my mother would buy, so for the longest time, I thought that all teas were jasmine! And then in 4th grade, I watched the tea episode of Good Eats and that’s when the education started! I’d like to blame Alton Brown for starting this obsession because now I only like loose leaf tea.
It wasn’t until my second year of college that I actually expanded my tea taste buds. Special shout out to Cara McGee, Queen Tea for her Adagio Fandom blends. Because of Cara, I actually started drinking blacks, herbals and whites and pretty much everything else in between. I still have a special love for my jasmine though :)
I drink tea daily. Usually just straight up, no sugar or milk with the exception of chai. I like chai with just a wee dash of milk and a sprinkle of sugar! This little obsession started young and just… kept going, I guess. I have friends who think I have a problem with tea, but I really don’t. Everything is good in moderation.
I also have a mug buying problem and I’ve got Disney to blame for that. At least all my mugs are being put to good use!

also I apologize in advance for lazy tasting notes and horrible grammar in everything I write. I’m an avid fandom blogger on tumblr we have some weird way of talking to each other and sometimes I forget that this isn’t tumblr oops
