Iron Goddess of Mercy - Ti Kuan Yin - Green from The Tea Merchant
34

I really wanted to like this tea. First this I noticed was that it had a solid foundation with a little bit of Iron Goddess character on the nose. 3 minutes in the yixing pot brewed a very pale creamy liquor. First brew was weak. Not much flavor at all. I resteeped it, and the second brew yields nothing. I experimented with different amounts of tea, different temps, and different times. Nothing could fix it. And that’s the biggest problem, a quality TiKuanYin shouldn’t take this much effort. One look at the steeped leaves and I could see part of the problem. They look terrible. Broken up and really torn up on the edges. They have no tensile strength and seemed to come apart just from picking them up. No nose on the steeped leaves, lack of flavor, no complexity and unappealing leaves make my :/ grade the only option I had.

Excellent. Smooth, crisp, vegetal, sweet, and a bit chocolaty. The infused leaves have a bit of a musky smell, but retain their green nose in the infusion. Transforms steep after steep.

Dragon Pearl from Premium Steap
90

Okay this deserves another tasting note. First things first, this tea has incredible patience. I’ve never had a Dragon Pearl that can steep this many times. Incredibly well made, the leaves still haven’t fully unfurled after 4 steeps. It’s very good, and as I’ve said before, very clean tasting. The real kicker here is that it really opens up after the 3rd steep. More vegetal, and leafy than the first 2, this tea MUST be resteeped. Great job Premium Steap!

Silver Needle from PekoeTea
89

Very good. It’s gentle, brews a pale yellowish liquor. Very clean, buttery, a bit of cucumber and some citrus.

Golden Monkey from Teas Etc
98

Everyone MUST try it. There’s no hype around this tea. Bold, sweet, milky. By far one of the best black teas I have ever had. Put down whatever you’re drinking right now. Order this and sit at your front door. You won’t be disappointed.

Matcha from Premium Steap
96

Really fantastic matcha. One of the best I’ve ever had. Expensive, but worth every penny

Hawaii-Grown Oolong from Samovar
95

Excellent tea. High quality, gorgeous leaves. Delicate, and sweet. Tastes fruity and slightly grassy. Mouth feel of a white but clear fruit flavors. Delicious over and over again. Steep as many times as possible.

Bancha from Gourmet of Old City
55

If you’re looking for flavor, this isn’t your best bet. It’s very bland, the leaves are brittle and appear low quality. It’s nothing special. Not recommended.

Houjicha from Samovar
91

Absolutely fantastic. Great color, great flavor. The flavor is very heavy, thick, and smoky. It’s one of the best roasted teas I’ve ever had. Definitely worth ordering. I tend to steep this one a bit longer than usual, I feel it really gets better and rarely over-steeps.

Dragon Pearl from Premium Steap
90

Sweet, buttery, a really well rounded tea. Incredibly clean tasting and flowery. Perfect for lighter foods.

Genmaicha Tea from Premium Steap
64

Very good for a typical genmai. However, if you’re going to buy a genmai cha, I would suggest Samovar’s ryokucha. It’s genmai with matcha powder and it blows most other genmais out of the water.

Red Hood from Premium Steap
79

While it’s a decent tea, I’m not going to be picking this up ever again. When I went to this store, I was impressed by the selection. They have a lot of tea and plenty of tea accessories. The problem with my experience here was the service. The woman that was working that day (who I believe was the manager) was very rude to me. She wouldn’t acknowledge that I even entered the store and when I asked her for suggestions, she seemed very annoyed with me. It was clear that she didn’t want me in the store at all. Stay away.

Masala Chai from Rishi Tea
79

Very well made, high quality ingredients and a good comfortable taste. Nothing too original or out of the ordinary, but a very good Masala to return to at any time. Compared to Samovar’s? Not as good. Still recommended however.

Earl Grey from Samovar
90

The best Earl Grey I’ve ever had. Although I’ve only ever had bagged stuff, the difference is mind blowing. The subtlety of the bergamont is perfect. And you can actually taste the blend of black teas in it. Phenomenal, no additives needed.

Six Summits from Teavana
81

Very good but needs milk. Steep the 1 teaspoon in about 8 ounces of water. Add in 2 ounces of whole milk to really bring out the woodsy flavors. It has a “watery” taste. Not as in watered down or bland, literally just a watery taste. It’s odd but good.

Formosa Nut Oolong from Teavana
75

Good but not easy to get right. I tried filling about 1/2 inch of the infuser or cup with warm milk, then pouring the water over the leaves and letting it steep. Very nutty and has rasberry and cinnamon flavors.

Wild Blueberry from Bar Harbor Tea Company
70

I’m mixed with this tea. It’s very potent with the blueberry flavor (it’s very fresh tasting and not too sweet) but not enough of the tea aspect comes through. I think that a longer steep time is better for this one. The blueberry flavors stay but the tea flavors really shine when steeped longer.

Masala Chai from Samovar
83

Fantastic tea, one of the best blacks teas I’ve ever had. Sweet, spicy, and creamy. Great for a desert tea or partnered with something spicy or Indian. Complex, buy in bulk because it goes quick. Not easy to get perfect, and if you get it wrong, it can be pretty bad. Use 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of sugar along with 2 tablespoons of the chai. Add 1 tablespoon of another black tea (something woodsy) and let steep for 3 minutes. Add 1 cup of milk and let boil again. When boiling remove from heat and let sit for 7 minutes. Please use whole milk, it really lets the flavors out. This tea isn’t for health, it’s a real treat. Buy this!

Strawberry Slender from Teavana
55

Nose is very overbearing. The nose is too sweet and powerful and gives no sense of tea (at least not enough for a Pu-erh). Tea was okay but it was too sweet to be a Pu-erh. The “woodsy” taste of the Pu-erh was really not good with the sweetness of the strawberry. Underwhelmed and overpriced. Not terrible, but not what I payed for.

Ryokucha from Samovar
87

Complex tea. Malty, full bodied, leafy, with a brown rice and milky flavor. Very good and energizing (matcha powder). Good alone as a meal or mixed with wheat or put in soup with rice, vegetables, and salmon for a great meal.

Hojicha from Adagio Teas
52

This is a good tea but somewhat average. It has a nutty body with a long finish. Good everyday tea, does not excite.
