drank Blue Magic Matcha by DAVIDsTEA

(DavidsTea 2022: 27)

I bought this solely for the novelty of a blue matcha. It did not disappoint in that respect. However, I’m really not a big fan of the flavour – some ginger berry mix? I made it with milk and it tasted oddly… squashy? I’m not sure. Not sure that ginger + matcha work well together for me.

2022 Sipdown 27/365!

Matcha latte with an odd combination of separated cream (oops, I guess that’s what happens in the freezer?) and coconut milk. It was pretty good, with a nice creamsicle flavour. I don’t feel the need to pick up more of this, but I did enjoy this last cup!

2022 Sipdown 26/365!

Yep, took the plunge and finished off the last of this. It tasted a touch stale, but oh so familiar and good. There’s some sort of… chocolate malty flavour that Frank used (I believe it’s also in the chocolate mate he did, of which I have…. a lot left…) I like it, and haven’t tasted it in teas from anywhere else. Too bad.

drank Cranberry Orange Cider by 52teas

This is not as good as whichever other cranberry-orange tea it was that I had recently (I’m suffering from severe baby brain and too lazy to check). Initial bubblegum vibes, but then I can taste the orange and some cider spices (more than just cinnamon, but I don’t know what exactly correlates to “cider” in my brain). Maybe a bit of cranberry too? But I can also taste the rooibos, and I’m not a fan of any of that poking through. It’s not bad, though!

Creamy orange chocolate, yum. Still think that swapping the base here to premium taiwanese assam would nearly make a Two Friends (Butiki) clone.

Review for my (Jan 2016?) packet of this tea, which I now aim to finish off since I have a fresh, tasty batch. This one is still tasty – perhaps a bit less flavour than it once was, but I’m loving the base and light blackberry cream.

drank Eggnog Chai by 52teas

This smells like just a chai – heavier on nutmeg and cardamom – and when hot, tasted like one too. I’d written it off as just that… until I tried it after it had cooled down considerably and lo and behold – creamy eggnog chai! I got the same creaminess on the resteeps, so I think it was a bit of a temperature thing. I do wish it was creamier, but ultimately ended up being fairly satisfied, especially as the spice blend is heavy on my preferred chai spices.

I think four of us Steepsterers drank this tea this week or last. haha

2022 Sipdown 25/365!

And with that, I’ve caught up on my one-per-day sipdown goal! Hoping to keep a steadyish pace going forward; lots of sipdown-ready teas in various places, particularly my little tea corner basket. This final cup is better than I anticipated – a hint of some tasty green/oxidized oolong flavour, but also a fair bit of astringency. Not a surprise, lower quality plus bottom of the bag, even though I was careful with the infusion time and used a finum filter.

Best part? It was a large bag taking up lots of space so made a slightly more noticeable dent to throw it out, haha.

Good work on the sipdowns so far!

2022 Sipdown 24/365!

Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge January 2022: Tea that reminds you of an alcoholic beverage

Brewed this up specifically because of the sipdown prompt. It’s old, but still tastes ok – and like a pina colada (which is, of course, why it’s on the list). Slightly tart, creamy coconut, pineapple – it’s a significantly lower-calorie version of the real thing! I think I’ll pop the remainder into the fridge to chill for tomorrow, though.

Sakura Sushi

OK now I’m thinking of brewing some, icing it, and putting in rum or vodka!

Kittenna

I bet that would be tasty!

Another sipdown candidate for the apricot prompt, but there are still a couple cups left… I probably need to find a different tea. This is an alright-flavoured cup of honeybush at this point, no particular apricot flavour.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
