6106 Tasting Notes

Handoff from Sil, originally from Jump62359. Thanks, both!

After brewing (and sampling), it was clear that this was a black/green blend, and I’d steeped it incorrectly. Sad. Overly hot water on the green tea didn’t do well for it, so it was astringent and unremarkable. The resteep was somewhat better, which gives me hope for round 2 with 180F water.

drank Latte Matcha by Teanobi

Had a sealed packet of this from ages ago… in fact, it was from LiberTEAS, when I purchased a box of tea samples! Like, 7 years ago. Luckily, it seemed to be just fine! Perhaps even better than fine – it made quite a nice latte! One of the smoothest matchas I’ve had, and great flavour, not overly bitter. I’m not good at reviewing matchas and their subtleties, but I’d definitely have it again. I sweetened it with maple syrup, but then also popped in some leftover coconut cream I had in the fridge (it was already brewed up in regular milk). While I do like coconut cream, I think I went a tad overboard – it was reaaaallly rich. Lesson learned, but I did still drink it. Will use the rest of the packet for a non- coconut latte.

This was… just okay. I expected more sweetness. There was certainly some, but it wasn’t quite what I wanted. Will have to give this another shot to see if maybe my brewing parameters were off. Or, you know, perhaps it’s just too old.

Writing a really belated note for this tea as I remove it from my Steepster cupboard – sipped it down at work eons ago, but it was memorable because I really enjoyed this blend, and the last cup was no exception.

Sipdown! 68/365

Sad sipdown, but this last cup was perfect. Spicy, chocolatey, and with that delightful sweetness that I believe I remarked upon the first time. Drank a handful of cups of this at work, where it was much enjoyed. Going to miss this one for sure.

Couldn’t recall why I hadn’t liked this tea (espresso flavouring + smoky tea, which is what I thought it was, sounds ok). Then I saw it was pu’erh, and remembered. Haha. The tea tastes like a blend of earthy pu’erh and smoky tea. No coffee flavouring at all.

Going to pop some maple syrup and cream into the last of it to see if I can improve it.

Not a fan, but this probably wasn’t intended for me. I do wish there was some espresso flavouring present, though. Now that I’m revisiting it, I recall missing that the first time around too.

Good to know! If I like puerh, I’m not a fan of smokey tea :P

Still delicious. I think I like the Plum Cheesecake tea better, because of the creaminess, but I adore the plum flavouring that Stacy used, and this tea still highlights it well.

One of the first teas I ever got; this is still pretty tasty! Loving the cherry flavour – floral yet sour and realistic. The base is probably a little less vibrant than it once was, but there were no off-flavours. Just lovely.

Despite being old, this green tea brewed up fairly well (greens, in my experience, turn metallic and gross when too old, which ruins any flavouring that might be left). No astringency or anything here, just a lightly flavoured, creamy cup. The pear is quite weak – I’m not even entirely sure I’d identify it as pear anymore – but it’s smooth and generally fruity, so still fairly pleasant to drink.

Sipdown! 67/365

This is a sample sipdown; I believe I have a partial packet elsewhere as well. Both, I believe, are from the Frank era (uncertain if this has ever been reblended by Anne).

Anyhow, this is pretty light in flavour. I admittedly just ate a biscotti so probably don’t have the freshest mouth for tasting subtle flavours, but there’s really not much there, if anything. My recollection is that I could never get out of this tea quite what others did, although I’d have to review my tasting note(s), as it could just be that my more recent experiences have been bland, and it was much better previously. Oh well, bye to this sample for now; the writing on the baggie is familiar but I can’t place who it was actually from, so hopefully I thanked them previously.

ETA: Hilarious. I reviewed this one 3 months ago (that would have been from the original packet I have floating around somewhere), and said the same thing about being uncertain if it had been reblended. Anne responded to say that it had not been. Also, sounds like this tea maybe just didn’t hold up too well with age, since both the sample and original are pretty bland.

This blend was crafted in early 2012 and hasn’t been reblended since.

Good to know I’m drinking 9-year old tea. Ahahaha.

I apparently cannot math AT ALL. Obviously I meant 7-year-old.

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
