January subscription tea 1/4

I was super excited to try this tea – I love lime, AND pear, AND vanilla! How could things go wrong? Exactly – they couldn’t. This was delicious. Very reminiscent of Butiki’s Lime Marshmallow (I believe that’s what it was called). The lime is strong, the tea is creamy. Om nom nom. I can’t say I tasted any pear, though. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just drowned out by the lime. Really enjoyed this, though.

This was quite delicious. I often think of tky as a very green oolong, but it’s usually more roasty and flavourful – this was no exception. Very rich-tasting.

Yeah, this one was still good. A creamy chai with some kick, but mild enough to enjoy without additions, and the “right” blend of spices for me (aka heavy on cardamom and a balance of ginger/cinnamon/clove). I believe I had this multiple times in travel mugs, and it was always good. Farewell, delicious tea.

About the vendor though…

Kittenna

Yeah, I won’t be having this one again, regardless of how much I liked it.

Did I miss something about Herbal Infusions?

drank Tulsi Tranquility by DAVIDsTEA

Read what Roswell had to say about this one and agree – didn’t really strike me as a “tranquil” blend – it was very much, IMO, a vibrant juice tea. And actually, a pretty decent one at that. I couldn’t pinpoint exactly the flavours I was tasting, but I enjoyed it enough to resteep twice, which is very impressive for an herbal tea! I’m not well-versed in what tulsi tastes like, but nothing stuck out to me so either it blended in well, or the flavour just wasn’t really present. I’d suggest drinking it for being delicious, and ignoring the name.

Another tea that went stale; this cup went down the drain after a few sips. I didn’t care for it anyhow, so it was no loss.

drank Gingerbread by DAVIDsTEA

Mehhh. I got 10g of this recently as I didn’t remember having had it previously. Until I tasted it and not only was it familiar, I didn’t care for it. Sadness. Now I’m stuck with like, 8g of it AND I’m 99% I have another 8g bag of it hiding around somewhere. It’s not even the rooibos/honeybush bothering me here, I just am not caring for the multitude of blended flavours which leads to a murky spiciness. Gingerbread feels like it could be so much simpler, but then again, I’m not a tea blender.

I’m a big fan of This one! If you’d ever like to do a swap I’d be happy to send you some things to try in exchange for some of this.

drank Peach Zabaglione by Design a Tea

Not too shabby. Still tasted like fuzzy peaches and perhaps some cream, but either I brewed it too strong or the base has developed some astringency, as there was a bit of a punch there. Surprisingly good flavour, though.

Not my favourite, but not bad. Lightly minty, and the ginger isn’t overly strong. Seems like a great tea for when one is feeling a little off, less so for enjoying.

drank Spring Jasmine by SquirrelDuck

A pleasant, light jasmine tea. Apparently is primarily oolong (which makes sense – it was darker than a typical green but no astringency of a black). Interestingly, also includes mango/strawberry/peach/apple, but could have fooled me. I’m not even sure I tasted anything fruity.

Jeez. I had 3 cups’ worth of this tea, and apparently oversteeped it each time. I do also think that this tea is somewhat finicky, and develops unpleasant astringency fairly quickly – I don’t usually fail that many times with a single tea. Anyhow, I wanted this tea to work, and there were flashes of deliciousness, for sure. Some creaminess, some jasmine, some nuts, but not enough of any of them, and masked by an overly strong base. I’d give it another shot someday, though.

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
