Ok, so someone gave me this tea as a sample, but I cannot find it on Steepster. It’s pyramid teabags with the company name, “Origin Ceylon Tea” (which, by the way, appears to be a German tea company), but the only other info I have is handwritten on the ziploc – Sencha Sanquhar Single Estate Origin Ceylon Tea. But, this isn’t a tea on Steepster or on their site. Sil, VariaTea – familiar at all? I don’t recognize the writing offhand, but if it was from either of you, I’m sure it would have been logged before…

Anyhow, it’s not a big deal if this mystery is never solved, because this tea was pretty meh. I also think I oversteeped it by accident, making it even more unremarkable. Will have to try again with the second and final teabag.

This was good. Much better than my recollection of the first cup was. I believe this needs a bit of a careful hand when infusing, otherwise it’s just too strong in all directions (tea astringency, flavouring). Lovely caramelly/chocolatey decadence.

Ahahahaha, sounds like this was originally from Crowkettle, and came to me via Sil, so thanks to you both! It’s marked “Floral Death”, which I think is hilarious. (I recall being apprehensive when I saw it in my bag the first time, but my flavour preferences have shifted a bit since then.) The tea contained rose petals, which worried me, but to my absolute delight, it appears to be much more heavily lavender/jasmine/not rose (I don’t like rose). So this one-cup sample was very much enjoyed by me, as lavender teas seem to have a calming effect on me, and I could use some calming. Haha. The white base was excellent here, with the florals; I would just prefer the tea to be even more heavy on the lavender.

Sil

Hahahahaha I remember that :)

Kittenna

Yeah. Definitely not your cup of tea, haha.

ashmanra

Ha! I love this tea, but yeh, if you are not into floral, you are going to HATE this one. I mix it with plain white for a friend who is just meh about floral.

Crowkettle

Wow! What a flashback :) This tea has gotten around and is doing surprisingly well considering when I bought it (four years ago now!?).

I agree on the lavender.

Kittenna

It was a treat! :D

Glad to finish this one off; it was okay, but nothing I’d pick up on my own.

Ooh, I should have probably just used the rest of this as a natural sweetener in other teas – I brewed up a whole cup of it and MAN was that sweet. Cloying, actually. There was a bit of an aftertaste that reminded me of artificial sweeteners/stevia, but I suspect if it was added in low amounts to other teas, it wouldn’t be nearly as noticeable.

Recommending this not as a standalone drink, but as an addition to others.

This is what you’d expect – a chai, with coconut creaminess. A good balance of spices for drinking straight, or with minimal additions; I think a latte would require a fair bit more tea as it’s not overly potent.

Chalk up another for the too-old teas, but at least since this is an oolong, it’s still tasty to drink, just likely missing some of its previous sparkle (if it had any). So yeah, it’s a green oolong. It’s smooth going down, light on the flavour, a good balance of florals and cream. Not too much in the way of those “green” flavours (agh, what are those compounds called).

This actually is decent enough to rate – judging by the notes of Sil and Raritea (thanks for the sample, btw!), it probably wasn’t a spectacular marvel of a tea, but a good, solid, green oolong. I’ll be looking forward to the few cups of this I have left.

Oh wow. I like to look at my previous notes on teas, out of curiousity, and this one has a bit of nostalgia – it looks like I last drank it when I had just started dating “the sweetest boy ever”… who is now both my husband and the father of our child. (I need some heart-emojis here!)

Anyways, my experience drinking this tea was a touch less magical this time – it was a few days ago, and I hardly remember it because I believe the baby was pitching a fit because bedtime. Sigh. I think it was also oversteeped and too strong, probably for similar reasons. Anyhow, one cup left of this as well – hopefully to be consumed while I can actually pay attention!

Sil

It’s funny to me that I was there for the start-ish of all that :) glad you guys have come this far

Kittenna

Funny how all the best things in life started coming around the same time! (I thought the funniest part was that in the comments, I had hopes of someone to share my tea stash with. Sadly no. Only when he’s sick.)

Liked this then, liked it now. Flavour probably somewhat diminished, but it’s still a decadent, creamy/chocolatey cup of rooibos. One more cup to go!

Sad times. This tea is definitely too old. It has that metallic tang of too-old (or over oversteeped/steeped with too hot of water) green tea – and I was careful with those last two. Sigh. There was some sweetness once I got past the initial flavours of the cup, but I guess this is just one tea that will remain unrated! It was probably good, though. :(

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
