Part of the December subscription box!

For whatever reason, the description/ingredients of this tea worried me – it didn’t sound like it would be what I was hoping for. But I was totally wrong – it’s delicious! Of course I figured out why I like it so much… it uses pretty similar flavouring to Eggnog Poundcake, which I absolutely adore. Different base, and possibly slightly different spicing, but it’s unmistakeable. I can’t say I got any cheesecake tanginess but I’m not sure I cared. This was a delicious cup of tea. I still prefer Eggnog Poundcake though; I think I like the white base better.

12 Belated Teas of Christmas – #4
I see I have an 11-month old note for this tea, so I must have another bag of it somewhere. Apparently I liked it before, and I still like it. Very cola, fairly ginger. I really want to add a touch of sweetener to see if I can really make it taste pop-like. I bet it would work amazingly. Also, the base is pretty great here. Can’t really pinpoint why, but I feel like it just works really well to solidify the flavours.

I think I finished my initial sample of this, and then got another in a recent-ish tea order (but who really knows, I have no idea what teas I do and do not own right now). Anyhow – brewed it correctly this time, and man are there some delicious chocolate caramelly notes in the aftertaste. Since I’ve recently had turtles chocolates, I can say that it tastes rather like them in tea form. Which is actually pretty tasty! I think the only improvement I might want with this tea is a bit richer of a base tea – although it’s possible that that would interfere with the flavouring. Overall, pretty tasty – a nice dessert treat!

do you ever? giggling

I did!! I have a very detailed spreadsheet from like 4 years ago. Willing to bet I still own 90% of those teas…

drank Pomiscus by Della Terra Teas

Sipdown! 1/365

In an effort to visualize progress I’m making with sipdowns, I’m going to aim to get in (an average of) one sipdown per day this year! Should be very, very achievable, so with any luck I’ll actually exceed this number! I’ll be drinking plenty of other teas as well, but this will record things removed from my cupboard (and give me something to show my husband, haha).

Anyhow, I swear I’ve had this tea before although there is no note, but it’s hard to say, as DavidsTea has had a number of pom teas that I could be confusing it with. This tea is pretty much as expected – standard black base (not astringent, not particularly interesting either), and a decent amount of pomegranate flavour. A pleasant surprise that the inclusion of hibiscus was done properly, only adding some depth to the fruitiness instead of mouth-puckering sourness. Not a huge fan of pomegranate, so not a tea I’d have again, but not a bad version of it!

Sipdown! Dang this was good. Basically all the best parts of every tea in it, making for an interesting and delicious cup. I found it particularly intriguing that I could pick out flavours from the different teas, like the chocolateyness of LB, the minerally oolong notes, the hay-y white tea. Sad I only had a sample, and that it’s now gone.

ETA: This was for the “summer” version that I opened a sample packet of a short while ago.

i really miss the verdant blends.

Kittenna

Yeah, me too. But only the good ones. Like this and LBCG. Probably a couple others.

12 Belated Teas of Christmas – #3
Another one I wasn’t overly stoked for as honeybush/rooibos still just don’t do it for me. But sometimes there are exceptions! This tea, though, is not one of them for me, unfortunately. It tastes primarily like honeybush with some hints of raspberry. Don’t really taste any almond or cookie until perhaps the aftertaste. My dislike of honeybush probably colours my opinion here – if you like honeybush this might taste more like the cookie this tea is named for. On the plus side, though, it’s not giving me a scratchy throat so I can probably manage to drink it as an iced tea!

Kawaii433

hehe Just read this… And I just finished my review and said I didn’t get almond nor cookie either. I don’t know much about honeybush taste though. No experience there.

drank Choco Chaga Detox by DAVIDsTEA

Sipdown! I admit, I bought two tea samples one day just to get a preview of this one. Turns out, it’s actually really good. Quite cocoa-chocolatey; I’m not sure I tasted much else, but if it’s a “detox” tea it probably has a variety of other “healthy” things in it. Would I drink it again? Maybe, but I’m not sure I like it any more than I do cacao shells, and it’s probably more expensive.

drank Jingle Bells by Lupicia

I still don’t get why a jingle bells tea is grape-flavoured (oh right, champagne??), but dang it’s tastily grapey. Had a really nice cup of this yesterday.

This was ok and fruity; lost some flavour as I could no longer identify the fruitiness, but still worth drinking. Down to a couple cups left!

12 Belated Teas of Christmas – #2
Wasn’t overly excited for this one as it smelled a bit more pepperminty than I’d like. However, the flavour is a pleasant surprise. The mintiness is fairly light and refreshing, and doesn’t overpower the creamy marshmallowy genmaicha. Wouldn’t be a favourite but I’m quite enjoying my cup!

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
