442 Tasting Notes

White Tiger (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
85

I am so sad that this tea has gone to online only status. It is one of the few teas that are a predominant tea flavour with undernotes of fruit that I actually like. Normally I like my teas to taste fake as hell (what, I’m slowly learning to like straights . . . ;) )

This one is a lovely white base which, as I said, you can actually taste. I’m still not sure about the 94 steeping temperature they recommend but it hasn’t burned my leaves yet so somehow there is magic happening to make a lovely cup. If you’re a fan of blueberries and white teas and haven’t tried this one, I recommend it. It is one of the whites from Davids that is worth the cost.

Organic Ponmudi from The Tea Haus
79

I needed a kick in the butt to get moving this morning, so I decided to dive into this one. And since I wasn’t in the mood for a straight black, I added some of the Chai Spice I have from the Tea Haus. It made for a very malty chai, even with a spoonful of sugar and milk. It was actually too dry for me, so I had to add more sugar to bring it to where I could drink it. The more I have the Ponmudi the more I decide that as lovely as it is, it isn’t my preferred black.

Sweet Peach from The Tea Haus
85

What’s a girl to do when she has two boxes full of those DelMonte real fruit popsicles left over from last summer? Apparently she uses them to sweeten her tea. Yeah, I did it and you know what, I’m not ashamed to admit it.

I cold steeped this tea overnight, and as lovely as it was black, I wanted to sweeten it a bit. So I melted two of those peach popsicles I had sticking around and then stirred them into the pot. It was actually pretty delicious. I think I may end up doing that for the last dozen or so!

Mango Diablo from DAVIDsTEA
85

I tried this one with trepidation, having decided that for me, chili and tea don’t blend in my favour. And yet I have to try everything that hits the wall, so I trotted home with my 6g and brewed it up.

Both dry and brewed, it smells absolutely amazing. The mango smell is dominant and is strong enough that I started to get excited. A good mango tea is delicious and this was full of potential.

As I sipped I first got a mouthful of mango, and damn but it was delicious. Fruity and sweet and perfect. And then the chili kicked in, and yup, it packed a punch. If I liked chilis in tea this would be an amazingly perfect tea for me. But sadly I want this one without the kick. If it was just the intense mango I’d be ALL over it for summer.

Rating it based on how well the tea lived up to expectations. I’d rate it lower for my personal preferences but the tea is actually delicious if that’s your thing, and I don’t feel it is fair to rate it down because I didn’t like that it met the description.

Premium Dragon Well Green Tea (Long Jing) from Teavivre
92

Hurray, today I finally got a chance to sit down and properly appreciate this tea. I’ve made it a couple times but always ended up dashing or getting distracted and I never got to give it the chance it deserved. Today though, I was able to relax and sip as I watched my current favourite actor in an absolutely horrible movie. What better time to have a great cuppa?

This tea is SO delicious. As everyone else has said it has a great full bodied flavour and holds up to multiple steeps. I’ve never gotten four steeps from a tea before but this one was still going strong! I’m only sorry that by the fourth steep I was craving something different. Thank you so much to Angel from Teavivre for the extremely amazing sample of this tea. I love it and am glad to have enough to be able to experience it again and again!

Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble from DAVIDsTEA
85

My only free day this week, and so it deserved a latte morning. But I didn’t want my usual tea so I decided to try this one, having read on someone else’s review that it did a really nice job.

They were right. I think I used just a tad too much milk as the tea flavour wasn’t as strong as I’d like, but this was delicious. Subtle notes of cinnamon and berry and just a really nice way to start the morning.

Malted ChocoMaté from 52teas
62

I tried this one again today, having not touched it for two months and completely forgetting what it tasted like. This time I brewed it at a lower temperature and let it sit longer, and there was definitely some chocolate notes to it. The tea still didn’t wow me, though, so it is off to a better home.

Ever Green (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
77

Wow, I don’t hate this one! I was so ready to not like it but it snuck up on me. The sea lettuce is definitely there, and it has that same asian restaurant flavour that Splash has, but the berries seem to mellow it out and the tea has a really high natural sweetness to me. I had it hot and without sugar and am glad I did, because I don’t think it needs any sweetener. Am definitely curious how this one will taste iced.

Sweet Watermelon from The Green Tea House
83
Northern Lights from DAVIDsTEA
89
Pink Cherry Cider from The Green Tea House
84

Brewed this one up last night to sip as I watched tv. Dry it smells so lovely, and you can see actual cherries sitting in the blend in large numbers. Which leaves me wondering how it can become such a delicate flavour after brewing. It is lovely, but almost too light for me, especially once the floral notes start creeping in as the cup cools. Its a nice tea, but I don’t think that its the cherry tea for me.

Ceylon Orange Pekoe from The Tea Haus
84

Despite having so many varieties and flavours of tea, sometimes a girl just craves a cup of orange pekoe. With this in mind, I got some of this one when we were at the Tea Haus on Friday and brewed it up for my morning cup today. Black, this is malty and hearty, and a great morning cup. I’m not the biggest malt fan so I added some sugar and mmmm this became a great one for me. I can see myself drinking this in the morning to wake up or the evening to unwind after a rough day. It would also be a great tea to blend with as well.

Raspberry Pu'erh from The Green Tea House
75
Kiwi's Big Adventure from DAVIDsTEA
92

Yum, I love this tea. It is sweet and mellow and just exactly what I had been hoping for when I first smelled it. I can see why it is described as a blend of peach and melon because yeah, that’s exactly what it tastes like to me. I can’t wait to try this one iced because I suspect it is going to be amazing served on ice with raspberries.

Senchamental from DAVIDsTEA
65

A big thank you to Erin for sharing this with me. It was doubly appreciated since it is impossible to get anymore.

Knowing that this tea is older, I knew that some of the notes would taste differently than they would’ve before. Curiously the dry leaf smelled like . . . children’s vitamins. You know, those ones that are supposed to be orange flavoured but actually don’t taste like anything someone would actually ever call food? Yeah, it smelled like those.

I brewed it up as per the directions, giving it a three minute steep, the lower end of the recommended spectrum. Excitedly I took my first sip and got . . . vitamins. It tastes exactly like it smells, complete with that powder taste that I always got after the vitamin. I almost thought that Fred and Barney were sitting in front of me in pink and purple pill form.

I am grateful to Erin for letting me try this one, however even if it was still available, I don’t think that I would buy it.

Love Elixir for Her from DAVIDsTEA

Despite the licorice in this one, the smell of the chocolate lured me in to try a small sample. I was happy to see that it hit the wall so I didn’t have to buy the jar sets.

Dry, it smells a lot like chocolate with an undercurrent of spiced notes. Normally the licorice in the ingredients would send me running, but I tried it anyway. Brewed, the chocolate is the main flavour. In fact that was all I got in the first couple sips. Soon though the licorice notes peeked out and it became the prominent afternote.

Overall it wasn’t bad, and I can see why others would like it, but it wasn’t the tea for me. Not rating it because I don’t believe in marking things down for personal preferences and/or issues.

White Milk Tea 3 in 1 from Old Town
100

After all the controversy and wank yesterday over this one, it sent me back to my cupboard to have a nice big glass of it myself. This is definitely a comfort tea for me, and one I adore. The tea flavour is strong but not overpowering, and there’s enough sugar in here to bring a dead horse back to life. The milk gives it a bit of froth and creaminess, and it honestly is still my favourite wakeup cup in the morning, over a year (and many many teas) later. I just can’t drink this one at night because the combination of the caffeine and the sugar leave me pretty wired for an hour or two.

Hot Lips (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
77

In a bid to purge my last in-cup experience with The Glow (see last review), I decided to have this one as a to-go last night while wandering the mall with my sister. I’m not sure if that was a wise decision or not. I was craving the cinnamon and it was definitely there and delicious, but there was a very strong off backtaste. I’m not sure if it was because of burnt leaves or if it was something else. Either way, I finished the cup which is a step up, but I think next time I’m going with an old standby to make sure I enjoy the tea!

The Glow from DAVIDsTEA
54

ugh, David’s WHY did you have to re-do this blend? It has been changed and it is a lot more floral. Before I used to love this one because the oat and cinnamon gave it a really nice cookie flavour when you added agave. Now it was more rose than anything else. I didn’t and couldn’t finish more than half my cup. It may look prettier but yeah, it now tastes like ass. Changing my rating way down because of the new blend.

Birthday Cake from DAVIDsTEA
70

After trying this one at home with milk and sugar added, I think I know why it isn’t a favourite of mine. Self-confession time, I’m the type of person who begrudgingly eats all the cake first to make the world happy while I’d be happier with just a plate of icing. I eat it separate so that nasty cake stuff doesn’t pollute the best sweet sugary part. This tea makes me have to have them combined, and honestly my inner five year old sits back and doesn’t wanna. Sorry birthday cake tea, I think I’ll go back to faking a love of cake to cover an addiction to icing.

Through the Grapevine from DAVIDsTEA
94

Okay, so this week has absolutely sucked for me. As a bit of a soul soothing consolation prize I made this one cold steeped when I got out-patiented from emerg on Friday, and have been nursing the pitcher ever since. This is definitely one of my all time favourite teas from David’s and was exactly the tea I needed to get even a small smile on my face.

Chocolate Cake from DAVIDsTEA

This one was . . . mediocre to me. I’m going to set that up to the fact that I’m not a big fan of chocolate cake, though. To me it tastes fake, not like true chocolate flavour, and the tea follows suit. It wasn’t bad, but I’d take the ice cream cake over this one any day.

Goji Pop from DAVIDsTEA
84

I have a love/hate relationship with tea depending on how it is brewed. If brewed well, it is delicious, full of flavour and fruity and not even needing sweetener (although I do love it with some agave.)

If its brewed badly, this can taste . . . just gross. And I also find that if you add sugar it ruins it. Luckily tonight I remembered all of this and brewed it really nicely and perfectly, and with a dash of agave. A litre later, I’m a tea-logged happy girl.

Cranberry Pear from DAVIDsTEA
98

I love this tea. I had it as a to-go cup today since I didn’t have time for anything to be iced, and was definitely not disappointed. When I pulled the bag I saw that it was a nice blend of the fruit and the tea, which I know doesn’t always happen. But this time I got someone who knew what she was doing and made me a perfect cuppa. Mmmmm.

Profile

Bio

An avid tea addict in the GTA, Ontario, Canada. I’m always looking for new teas and new tea addicted friends!

My preference is loose leaf of all varieties, however the occasional bagged tea can come along and charm me. Flavoured or straight, there is a good chance that I will be falling in love.

My ratings system is based on the smiley faces above the ratings scale.

0-10 — This tea didn’t get past the initial sip process. I just couldn’t bring myself to drink more, I found it so horrible.

11-50 — It made it past first sips, but as I drank a bit more I realized I really wasn’t enjoying the tea, and would never drink it again.

51-60 — I probably made it through the cup, but won’t be trying another one.

61-69 — Either it’s a mystery tea and I can’t decide if I like it or not, or it is one that I felt was purely adequate.

70-85 — These are the teas that I appreciate and/or like. If they are falling in this area they are ones that I would definitely re-buy, however are not ones that I must always have on hand. The good, but not the amazing.

86-94 — These are the favourites. My cupboard feels empty if they aren’t inside.

95-100 — Tea perfection!
