38 Tasting Notes

Classic Earl Grey from Butiki Teas
83

I am surprised reading some of these other reviews. When I opened the bag, I immediately smelled a very strong Bergamot smell. (Bergamot is that orangey-citrus smell/taste, right?)

I just sipped the tea, and again, I am getting A LOT of Bergamot. It is almost overpowering, but I was in the mood for a lighter black tea this morning, and I am enjoying the citrus note.

Overall, this is good. Definitely more citrusy than some of the other Earl Grey’s I have had.

Almond Indulgence (Formerly Almond Cookie) from Butiki Teas
87

This was my morning cup of tea today.

When I opened the package, it smelled very strong of almonds. I thought it smelled wonderful, and was excited to try it.

I definitely get a light almond taste with a hint of cinnamon. After steeping, I think the tea smells more like cinnamon than almond. Seeing as I really enjoy almonds and cinnamon, I really enjoyed this tea.

Another excellent tea from Butiki!

Rooibos Vanilla from Adagio Teas
82

I got this as a free sample for sharing my last order from Adagio on facebook.

I like drinking rooibos at night time. I like the taste, plus it is caffeine free.

When I opened the package, I smelled a lot of vanilla. Since I like the taste of rooibos, I was honestly worried that all I was going to taste was vanilla.

The vanilla flavor is definitely there, but it is very light. I sort of get a vanilla-wood type of taste. It has a natural sweetness to it that I like.

I had this rated a little bit higher when I first started drinking it. However, now that I am about half way done, I feel like the aftertaste gets kind of old quick. It isn’t bad, I just do not find anything exceptional about it.

I would drink this again at night time.

Organic English Breakfast (TB01S) from Upton Tea Imports
86

This is my first tea from Upton.

It smells like other English Breakfast blends I have smelled. That is not necessarily a bad thing, this is a straight black-tea after all.

This tastes very rich. Full flavored. The aftertaste is slightly bitter, but not in a bad way. I get just a slight bitter note that lingers at the end. The tea itself is not bitter, it is just in the aftertaste.

I would definitely drink this again.

Raspberry Truffle from Butiki Teas
86

My sister came over earlier and after I made her smell all of my new teas, she wanted a cup of this because it smelled very interesting.

I enjoy truffles (especially raspberry truffles), and this tea honestly smells exactly like a raspberry truffle. It has a very strong chocolate scent, as well as a very strong raspberry scent.

When I took the first sip, I honestly thought it tasted a little weak. My sister, however, thought it was really, really good. I took a few more sips, and although I appreciated the light flavor, I decided to add just a little bit of honey. The description said that sugar would awake the tea, so I thought I would try it.

I thought that the honey definitely brought out some of the flavors. After I added the honey, I thought that the chocolate note was definitely a lot stronger. I was very impressed.

I really enjoyed this tea, and could definitely see myself drinking this again after dinner as a desert tea. If I had it again, I would probably add just a little bit of honey to it.

Organic Rooibos from Butiki Teas
87

This tea is currently steeping. The smell has a very light citrus note, it smells excellent.

Okay, first sip…

It tastes like it smells. It has a nice, clean, well-rounded rooibos flavor, with a light citrus note. This does not taste bitter at all. This is really good!

I don’t want to fill this note with too many adjectives or descriptions. This tea tastes very fresh, and I appreciate the simplicity of it. If you enjoy rooibos, you will definitely enjoy this tea.

Coconut Creme Pie from Butiki Teas
88

This tea smells great! It smells very strong of coconut.

You can definitely taste the coconut when you sip this. It was very smooth. The coconut is not overpowering, and you can still taste the rooibos. I thought the tea tasted kind of naturally sweet (just a hint of sweetness), but if I were to make this again, I might add a small amount of honey. I feel like this might bring out the coconut flavor even more.

I had this tea after dinner, and it really hit the spot!

Cider Guayusa from Butiki Teas

When I first opened this package, I definitely could smell the apples, but I also got a scent of something that I didn’t like, which I am guessing is the clove. I don’t really like the smell of cloves. This is my first guayusa, so I wasn’t sure what the smell was until I read this tea contained clove powder. The tea is steeping right now, and I wanted to write this down quickly before I tasted it. I am not sure if I will like this based on the smell. It is almost done steeping.

The pot is done steeping. This definitely smells like a light, spicy cider. However, I can still smell the clove, which does not make me optimistic about this tea.

I waited for my mug to cool a little bit before tasting it. I can taste a light apple note and a whole lot of spice. Maybe I am just hypersensitive to clove, but it almost seems a bit overpowering to me. Like I said, I get a light apple note, and then I feel like that gets overpowered by the clove, which is the taste that remains in my mouth.

Seeing as I do not like cloves and that is the primary taste I am getting, I am going to rate this tea half way between the yellow face with the slanted mouth and the face with the smile. That is how I feel about it. I will definitely finish my mug, but compared to the other teas I have from Butiki, this is my least favorite so far.

If you are someone that enjoys cloves, you will probably really like this tea!

Cream of Earl Grey (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
87

This tea smells strong of vanilla. I am also getting a hint of bergamot, which pairs nicely with the vanilla.

This is not a strong black tea, at least compared to some of the other black teas I have been drinking lately. The lightness, combined with the vanilla and bergamot is delicious. It has a relaxing quality to it. I think this is one of the first black teas I have had that I would classify as “relaxing”.

I have the Around the World sampler from DAVIDs that I have slowly been working my way through, and I think this might be my favorite tea from it so far.

Khongea's Assam Leaf from Butiki Teas
85

This tea smells like a strong black tea.

This tea tastes very rich, and has a hint of maltyness. It has a very fresh taste to it. I made this pot pretty strong (I needed an afternoon pick-me-up). About mid-sip, I hit a bit of a bitter note (which might have something to do with how strong I made it), but it quickly fades away.

I was in the mood for a straight black tea, and this hit the spot.

Organic Dragon Well from Butiki Teas
86

This is the first dragon well I have had.

When I opened the package and smelled it, I got vegetal notes, and a hint of toasty-ness.

When I sip it, I get a very clean vegetal taste, I would say a little bit like a snow pea or sugar snap pea. I might have used a little over 8oz of water (it might have been closer to 10oz), but this tea tastes very light, in a good way.

This is excellent. Very refreshing.

English Breakfast from Butiki Teas
93

So, I normally don’t drink black teas at night, however, my very first order from Butiki arrived today, and I couldn’t wait to try it. I decided to make a cup of this around 10pm.

I am relatively new to the tea world, but this is easily the best English Breakfast I have had so far. If you are relatively new to tea like I am, this is the kind of tea you want to be trying.

I was starting to think that I might not like English Breakfast teas. I have had some other English Breakfast blends that smelled and tasted kind of bland. Before opening this tea, I honestly thought that this might be just another standard cup of tea that I like, but is really just a “good tea”.

This tea smells very rich, and smells much more lively than some of the other English Breakfast blends I have had. As soon as I smelled it, I thought to myself, “Oh?”.

This tea tastes like a full-bodied black tea, with a hint of toasty-ness. It is not bitter at all, and tastes very smooth. With some of the other black teas I have had, I have gotten a bitter aftertaste, but I do not taste that at all with this tea. I feel like at first, I get this strong black tea flavor that slowly fades away (in a good way) and leaves a very light aftertaste. Mmmmm….

This is my first tea from Butiki, and my high expectations (based on what others here have said about Stacy’s tea) were absolutely met, if not exceeded. I would definitely buy this tea again.

After this cup, I can honestly say, “I like English Breakfast blends…..at least good ones like the one from Butiki.”

Mulberry Magic from DAVIDsTEA
79

This came in the “Around the World” sampler pack that I bought at DAVIDsTEA. This is a pack of 12 teas that come in small tins, and are packaged in a small box with a card that lists the descriptions.

I thought it was really funny that for this tea, the description on the card starts off with the question: “Why is everybody talking about mulberry leaves?” I don’t know a single person talking about Mulberry leaves. Hahahaha.

Anyway, about the tea…

When I smell it, I get the sensation of a buttery peanut. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, buttery peanuts do not necessarily smell refreshing, nor do they sound like something I would like to drink.

I was kind of thinking about buttery peanuts on my first sip, and I think it weirded me out a little. However, now that I have had several sips, I think this tea is delicious.

Like I mentioned above, I do not think it is a refreshing cup of tea, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For example: at the end of a long day, I might have a mint tea to unwind and relax. That is refreshing. At the start of a long day, I might have a strong black tea, which I wouldn’t consider refreshing either, but I still really really like black teas.

The aftertaste almost has a light buttery note and a light peanut note, which is interesting.

Decaf Lemon Mint Spice from McNulty's
80

I have had a really lazy Saturday, and thought I would wind down with a cup of decaffeinated Lemon Mint Spice from McNulty’s.

When I opened the bag, I could immediately smell mint. Even after steeping, the primary smell I am getting is mint.

I think I am only getting a slight lemon note when I sip this. I first taste mint, but it isn’t overpowering. A moment later, I can taste the tea. It has a very light taste.

In my opinion, this is a good tea to have at the end of a day. I find mint teas kind of relaxing in general, and this one is no different. I wasn’t looking for a strong tea to have a night. I wanted something light and refreshing, and that is my opinion of this tea.

Java Santosa from McNulty's
93

This is the second day I’ve had this, and damn am I enjoying it. This is my favorite black tea that I have had so far.

Also, I feel more energized after a cup of this tea than when I have coffee in the morning.

Time to go make more!

Rooibos Capetown from Primatea
83

As soon as I opened the bag, I was immediately hit with a lovely citrus smell. This tea smells very strong of citrus, kind of like a combination of orange zest and lemon.

I can’t stress enough how citrusy this tea smells. It is smells VERY citrusy.

I put 1 table spoon in the tea basket, put the basket in the pot, and made an entire pot for everyone at work. As I was pouring the water in from my tea kettle through the infuser, I could really smell orange zest.

I was worried that this tea was going to be bitter. Orange zest in and of itself is bitter. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The tea was not bitter at all, and had a strong citrus flavor. I did not add any sweeteners or honey. I could see a little honey potentially bringing out the flavor of the orange.

When I first sip the tea, I get an orange and lemon taste. However, the aftertaste has slight floral notes that I think make this tea shine.

Overall, I was very impressed with this tea.

Casablanca from Primatea

When I first opened this bag of tea, I was immediately hit with a strong berry smell. It was such a strong berry smell that one of my friends asked if it was even tea.

I have been trying to sample different berry teas. I really enjoy berries, but out of all the berry teas I have sampled in the past, none have really blown me away.

I thought this tea had a very strong berry flavor. However, right after I poured the water into the teapot at work, I started talking to a co-worker and definitely steeped way too long. The tea ended up tasting a little bitter. I am not sure if this tea is generally on the more bitter side or if it was because I steeped it too long and the water was too hot, so I am going to hold off on rating it until I make it again.

Jasmine from McNulty's
79

The stamp on the bag says “Jasmine China Green Tea”. I thought this tea was refreshing, and was a good afternoon pick-me-up.

After steeping, I thought it smelled more on the vegetal than jasmine. You could definitely taste the green tea with just a hint of jasmine.

I would have preferred just a little more jasmine, but I really like green tea, so I still give this tea a good rating. I will most likely drink this again tomorrow morning.

David's Organic Breakfast from DAVIDsTEA
78

This is a good cup of tea. I have definitely had better black teas, but I am enjoying this.

It is a very straight black tea. As others here have noted, I don’t find anything particularly special about this tea. If you like straight black tea, you will probably like this. I like straight black teas.

This is my first cup of tea in the morning, and I would definitely drink this again.

Berry Creme from McNulty's
72

This tea smells like a bouquet of berries! I think the primary smell I am getting is strawberry.

When I taste it, I first taste the berries, followed by black tea. It is very smooth. I definitely get a lot of berry flavor, but it isn’t so strong that you don’t taste the tea.

This is one of those teas that grows on me as I drink more of it. I am about half way done with my cup, and keep raising the rating slider.

I could see this being a very good fruity iced tea in the summer time.

Java Santosa from McNulty's
93

I am starting my morning off with a cup of this, and I think this is an excellent cup of tea.

It has a rich taste, and is not bitter at all. It leaves a good aftertaste in my mouth.

I haven’t tried a wide variety of black teas, but this is definitely one of the better ones that I have had.

Silver Needle Jasmine from Primatea
92

I really like white teas. I also really like jasmine teas. I have never had a silver needle jasmine before, so I have no other similar teas to compare this to.

As my co-worker noted, this tea smells like “the fresh smell when you are a kid running through a field.” I don’t think I could have said it any better. It has a very pleasant “fresh” smell to it.

I absolutely love how this tea tastes. It is very light, and has a strong jasmine taste.

Mmmm…this is good.
