978 Tasting Notes

Bengal Spice from Celestial Seasonings
50

Alright, I’m up finishing homework tonight and decided that I would make some chai. I am out of loose leaf, but I had this and thought it might taste good. I boiled 1 cup of water and dissolved 1.5 Tb of brown sugar. I added 2 bags of Bengal Spice and let it simmer for 5-6 minutes. Then I added 1 cup of skim milk and stirred it all together for 3 minutes at a simmer. It smells amazing – very spicy and like burnt caramel…yum. My whole apartment smells like this, it is a wonder the smell didn’t wake my husband up!

Okay, I put this in a cup and tried it….EEEK!! This tea is so heavy on the cinnamon it is crazy. This didn’t fill my cup up much because a lot of the water evaporated, so I added about another cup of milk to my cup. Much better. It is a cold drink, but that is fine. It is pretty good and worth it for the amount of work it takes.

Initially, the dry leaf was unimpressive – very small, almost looks like the leaves were torn. There were several different shades. The smell is a very basic black tea, nothing spectacular.

Once brewed, the liquid is very light in color, so light in fact, that I was sure it would taste weak. However, it was a medium body, smooth black tea. It isn’t anything special, but good for a plain black tea. I tried it with milk and it held its own, but didn’t overpower.

After the second infusion, the leaves really opened up and I realize now that they weren’t small or torn pieces, but were sort of rolled. These leaves are HUGE!! Although the liquid is extremely light in color, the flavor from infusion 1-3 was pretty consistent. This tea may be able to take quite a few infusions.

I would like to say I enjoyed this cup of tea, but I never got a chance. I made the tea and set it on my table to slightly cool while I took dinner out of the oven. My cat thought this would be a good time to knock the entire mug onto the carpet. sigh I love this tea and I will just have to make more.

I was really wanting cookies tonight, but since I don’t have any, I decided to go with this tea as a guilt-free option. I added a packet of Splenda to this along with milk and it is by far the best preparation I have had. So cookie-like!! Yum!!

Switched over to this for the evening, I’m going to see a movie in a little bit and plan on finishing up homework when I get back so caffeine is in order. I still think this is pretty good, however, it is easy to overdo it when adding milk. I really think I prefer my yunnan.

Pretty weak on the third infusion, but good overall.

I really wanted an Earl Grey this morning, but this is a pretty good substitute.

Still going strong at the third infusion.

Ooh, I forgot how good this was with milk….have to really add just a little though, the milk can easily overpower this light tea.

What a great breakfast tea! This was the taste that I had been looking for the last few mornings, but for some reason didn’t think to try this one. I had this plain because I was having a sweet breakfast and I really enjoyed it. I think that further infusions will be given at least a bit of milk and possibly some sweetener also. …oh, and I only have a small amount left, all my great teas are running out!!

This is my breakfast tea and I am very happy with it today. I am getting the slightly sweet, full body taste (almost like a coffee/tea combo) and it is strong but not bitter. Very nice cup of tea. I almost never take my breakfast tea plain, but this one is very smooth so plain it is.

Had this with honey and a little milk – tastes like my fave green tea latte from Starbucks.

Profile

Bio

I am a former coffee drinker turned tea lover.

Black tea is probably my favorite type of tea, but I rather enjoy most types… I’m even developing a taste for pu-erh.

Rating Scale:
0-10: This tea is either flavorless or just plain undrinkable. I will avoid these teas in the future.

11-20: I was only able to make it through a few sips before pouring the tea out.

21-30: I may have been able to make it through the first cup but the thought of having another has me cringing.

31-40: Teas in this range are not horrible, but nothing I would seek out in the future.

41-60: Would drink if offered, but would not purchase for myself.

61-70: Okay, nothing special

71-80: Enjoyable, but I have to be in the mood for these. Probably would purchase if I found a really great price.

81-90: Pretty good tea, will probably be one of my favorites.

91-95: These teas are really excellent. I wouldn’t necessarily run out and buy more of these (just because there are so many teas out there that I haven’t tried), but I would miss this tea.

96-99: Terrific, very impressive.

100: This special rating is reserved for teas that are absolutely perfect in my opinion. I will only give out a rating of 100 to one tea per category (Earl Grey, unflavored black, dessert tea, Irish Breakfast, etc). These are teas that I really want to have around.

Perfect Teas so Far:

Earl Grey: Saint Isaac’s Blend (Russian Earl Grey) from Upton

Dessert Tea: Marco Polo from Mariage Freres

Unflavored Black: Emperor’s Red from Premium Steap
