26 Tasting Notes

Cranberry Spice Black Tea from Indigo Tea Company
95

Awesome. My girlfriend and I picked it up because it smelled amazing – more like cranberry than a freaking cranberry itself.

The flavor is smooth, mild and slightly sweet even without sugar. A really great tea to have after dinner or something. Just nice going down. Probably a good tea for new tea drinkers or people new to the bitter tastes associated with black tea.

Kiwi Pear from The Republic of Tea
67

Cozy smell, nice taste. This is another tea that my girlfriend loves but I’m not nuts about. But, it’s some high-quality green tea to say the least! I’d recommend it if you want a stable staple tea.

Green Tea Lemongrass from Good Earth Teas
100

I tried preparing a subtle variation. This stuff is one of my main-stays when I’m looking for a good cup of tea in a hurry. Especially when I come home to a cold apartment and need something to hang on to while the room heats up.

Honey Vanilla Chamomile from Celestial Seasonings
84

I dunno what the other guys are on about. This tea is freaking delicious with a little sugar. The honey / vanilla flavors do blend together, but the blend that they make is really unique, really calming and totally full-bodied. I probably won’t buy it again (I gotta stop!), but for the time being, I’m really going to enjoy it!

Madagascar Vanilla Red from Celestial Seasonings

Way better than Tazo’s vanilla rooibos.

Also, this tea marks the 6th straight rooibos blend I’ve bought. Now I know how heroin addicts feel…

Green Tea Lemongrass from Good Earth Teas
100

Absolutely one of my favorite teas EVER! It’s so simple: green tea, lemon grass, ‘natural flavors’ (okay, maybe not so simple). But the blend is a wonderful, citrusy flavorful adventure.

This tea started my love affair with lemongrass herbal teas. I did run out, however, so I went so far as to swipe a leaf of lemongrass bush from our local conservatory. Sssh! Don’t tell them. It was delicious though, so I have to compliment their craftsmanship.

Breathe Easy from Traditional Medicinals
68

I was having some breathing problems, so I thought that I would pick up a tea that would help with my breathing. I wasn’t sure what to get, but luckily, I ran into this stuff at my grocery store. It was cheap and tasty, but I can’t gage whether or not it actually works.

Either way, the blend of ingredients is great as its own tea, as the licorice and other ingredients make a tasty, fruity and generally powerful tea. It’s very present and very powerful in flavor.

Organic Decaf Green Chai from Trader Joe's

Mint Green Tea from Giant Eagle Market District
68

Nothing too complicated. The mint / spearmint blend is a great taste, but for me, it’s a moody thing. I only like it when I feel sick. The minty rush is great for calmin’ the old belly after a particularly awful meal (a 1 pound burrito composed mostly of hot chili, for example).

The missus LOVES this tea, but I wasn’t very partial to it. It’s pretty cheap (unbelievably! About $3 – $4 for 20 bags), but the blueberry flavor is a bit too overpowering and too perfumy for little ol’ me.

It’s one of the better blueberry teas I’ve tried in my time, but I didn’t appreciate the overpowering taste / smell of rosehip.

Blueberry Herbal Tea from Giant Eagle Market District

La France Pear from David Rio
58

I purchased this a couple years ago, but I still have a few bags lingering around. The version I have contains matcha green tea and sunflower pedals, in addition to ‘natural french pear’ (whatever that is).

It’s a smooth tea, and the green tea is of wonderful quality. I hated it at first, but once I figured out how to actually steep green tea, it made sense – and it was pretty robust! Nothing to write home about, though. Don’t let the packaging fool you: this is the kind of quality you can buy as a generic grocery store brand.

That said, it’s not bad. Flowery, but no qualities that make it anything to go out of your way for.

Vanilla Rooibos Parfait from Tazo
68

I wouldn’t expect it from Tazo, but this was a pretty good rooibos. Vanilla was nice, and the portions in the bag are huge. It makes it nice and strong.

For a serving suggestion, get a bunch of these from a friend who works at Starbucks (they throw these bags out if they’re not used, so ask them to save them for you) and use the bags as a blend to any of your usual teas. It really helps make bitter – but essential – teas go down without too much sweetener.

Vanilla Rooibos Tea Latte from Tazo
Awake- Filterbag from Tazo
16

I don’t know where Tazo is getting this black tea from, but it’s awful. Super bitter, not malty and just an overall bad experience. The taste reminded me of how sewage smells.

Even my generic grocery store brand of black teas is in a better position than this. Seriously. Avoid this like the plague, or at least mix it with another, more robust tea. Blech.

Earl Grey from Tazo
63

Not bad. I mean, it’s Tazo.

But it’s still a decent Earl Grey that’s cheap enough to keep around as a staple.

Acai Green from The Republic of Tea
84

Probably the least pretentious açai tea I’ve found, and consequently, one of the best. The flavor isn’t overpowering (but still citrusy enough to let you know it’s there) and the flavorings make a nice, calming aroma.

Be careful though – it is a green tea, so it can get bitter in a hurry. Make sure the conditions (and timing) are optimal, and you’ll end up with a kickass cup.

Blackberry Sage from The Republic of Tea
34

Not a fan of the flavor. It’s really bitter and has a salty taste that my tongue refuses to believe is a real thing.

I’d pass on it, but if you’re in a bind, this will satisfy your need for fruity tea. I’d suggest some of the Republic of Tea’s other black teas though – like Vanilla Almond or Earl Greyer – if you’re looking for a tasty pick-me-up.

Otherwise, you’re probably better off just eating a black berry. (The fruit, not the phone)

Vanilla Almond from The Republic of Tea
100

I don’t know what these guys are on about. This tea is awesome the way it is. I used to have this every morning as a pick-me-up before class, and it was so much better than plain Assam, Darjeeling or other black teas.

The almond flavor is where it’s at. The Republic of Tea describes it as a ‘dessert tea’. It’s really sweet and flavorful, so, try it as that. It really puts a nice touch on the end of a good meal with friends.

Be careful not to oversteep it. If it’s bitter, it’s a disaster zone.

Hot Apple Cider Tea from The Republic of Tea
67

A great fall flavor for me. I’ve stockpiled about 3 tins of this because it gets rare during the winter, spring and summer months.

Like said before, it’s very subtle. Try it with honey with a long, long steeping time.

Learn from my mistake. Do not make it into an iced tea. You will regret it.

Rooibos Tropical Tea from Indigo Tea Company
84

One of my favorites from Indigo.

It’s a real classic and has a very subtle but memorable taste. Pretty aromatic, but it’s just an extremely comforting tea. Make sure to steep it in really hot water for a while to get the maximum flavor and bitterness.

Rooibos Paradise Tea from Indigo Tea Company
100

If you ever get the chance to visit Indigo Tea Company in Burnsville, MN, try out Neal’s selection of rooibos teas. The guy is one of the nicest people on the planet, and truly knows his tea.

My girlfriend purchased this for me, and it’s unbelievably aromatic and delicious. It’s a bit pricer, but that’s the price you pay for green rooibos. It has a real flavorful punch, even without sugar taking the edge off. Terrific as an iced tea.

Goji Raspberry from The Republic of Tea
67

Not great, but it meets that standard Republic of Tea tastiness. It isn’t bad by any means, just not a great tea.

The lady who sold the tin to me insisted the flavor is “not quite a raspberry and not quite a raisin. It’s somewhere in the middle, there.”
