150 Tasting Notes
I am up far, far too early. I started off this morning (at 3 am) on a sweet cloud of Shang’s Golden Needle (thoughtfuly provided by TeaTiff) and then decided since I have all this morning time, I would dive into my Upton Keemun samples. I wish I had picked a different one to start with.
This is aggressively smokey- almost acrid. I don’t mind some smoke, but this is unpleasant to me – leaning toward tar/creosote. I might not finish this cup.
Flavors: Smoke, Tar
I received this in a swap from TeaTiff. Thanks so much for introducing me to Shang! This is a really interesting tea. According to Shang this is made from a white tea bush, which likely explains the “difference” I taste in this. It’s a bit hard for me to describe that difference, but it is so very good. It brews up a reddish amber cup with with a bready, sugary aroma. The first sip is sweet. Brown sugar sweet with a pleasant malty note that becomes a bit more prominent as it cools. This is pretty tea. It tastes pretty and it is starting my stupidly early morning in a lovely way – letting me coast into full consciousness on a sweet note. Thanks so much TeaTiff. This goes on the shopping list.
Flavors: Baked Bread, Brown Sugar, Malt
I have been wanting to try this tea FOREVER. Thanks to the generosity of TeaTiff, I finally got to. This has a few things I love a lot: Laoshan Black (~sigh~), CHOCOLATE (cacao nibs), some Wuyi oolong and roasty-toasty brown rice. I am both happy and sad about that… I’m happy because this some righteous tea y’all. It’s smooth and warm and cuddlycomforty. I wish it was the depths of “Winter” or what passes for Winter in Central Texas because this is exactly what I would reach for to warm up and purr (I may also wish it was Winter because it’s already hot as hell here and I’m already tired of it, but still.) I’m sad, so sad because this has been out of stock at Verdant since I found Verdant. Thank you SO much TeaTiff!
This is a deep dark cup of sweet yum. More on this (and the song) on my blog at:

Good (early) morning Steepster. I’ve been a little overwhelmed with work so haven’t been around much. I’ve been drinking tea but not writing much about it. This was a sample I got when I discovered Yezi’s sample promotion (3 free samples if you pay $2.95 shipping!). I went in search of their Jin Jun Mei, and I got it, this one and their Jin Pin.
I don’t get the smoke Yezi mentions for this tea, but I do get a little tobacco bite at the back end of the sip. This won’t be a morning tea for me, but is perfect for the afternoon. What comes through the most for me is sweet harmony. Like the Everly Brothers (and RIP Phil): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTYe9eDqxe8
