drank Genmaicha by Rosali Tea
484 tasting notes

This is another of the teas from the box I won from Rosali Tea.

I think this is my favorite Genmaicha I’ve tried. Mostly because I basically can’t taste the green tea, and only taste the toasted rice. I like the taste of toasted rice, but haven’t found a green tea that adds anything to it in my opinion. I will happily drink the rest of this sample but I don’t think I’ll be buying more. I would definitely buy just straight toasted rice or a black Genmaicha if anyone sells them, though.

Another tea from the box I won in Rosali Tea’s drawing.

This is lovely! It’s soft and floral and the base is faintly sweet. I’m pretty sure the base is Bai Mu Dan/White Peony, which I adore on it’s own, and definitely love in this blend. It’s not as strongly flavored as most of the Jasmine teas I’ve had in the past, but it’s really well balanced and the flavors work really well together. I would definitely buy this, but I didn’t see it on their website when I looked, so maybe it’s not something they regularly stock?

I’m not a big fan of fruit-mint blends, but I like to try things I don’t expect to like on occasion because sometimes my tastes change, and sometimes a tea is surprisingly appealing despite my expectations. However, it’s not the case this time. This is sour, with a faint taste of raspberries, and a bit of mint. The flavors don’t really complement each other, and it didn’t taste enough like raspberries in my opinion. It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t especially good either.

I made this as a latte since it smelled like it would be rather sweet, and that’s how I prefer my rooibos chai anyway. It was deliciously smooth and creamy, but a bit sweeter than I prefer and surprisingly lacking in spice for a chai. It might be nice for blending, bu t I find it somewhat lacking on its own.

Flavors: Coconut, Creamy, Sweet

I find I can really taste the peppercorns and ginger when I let it steep longer than 6 minutes. Because it is a rooibos, you can steep as long as you want without it getting bitter. It is one of my favourite chais, but I only like it steeped a long time. I find it is normally extremely flavourful, perhaps you got an older sample?

rosebudmelissa

It’s possible. Or maybe I didn’t steep it long enough, or maybe some of the spice was drowned by the milk.

drank Goji Pop by DAVIDsTEA

I think I don’t really like goji berries? I was hoping this would have a stronger melon flavor. It had a unique taste, but I didn’t particularly like it.

i know this might be a stupid question: have you tried goji berries alone?

rosebudmelissa

Not as a tea. I think I tasted a dried one at some point, and I don’t think I was a huge fan.

Kirkoneill1988

hmm, i have some goji berries i could share, but i don’t know where they are. if you try them as a tea then you can be 100% sure you don’t like them if you don’t

rosebudmelissa

Thanks for the offer, but I think I might still have some from when I tried them before.

Kirkoneill1988

no problem :)

This is a tea I’ve been wanting to try for a while since I’ve seen a few reviews singing it’s praises. I haven’t enjoyed too many of Republic of Tea’s blends in the past and I know I don’t tend to like their black tea base, but I decided I wanted to give this one a try anyway. I’m glad I took the chance. This is a lightly caramel flavored tea, and the base has a bit of bitterness, but it’s quite pleasant. It doesn’t taste artificial and there doesn’t seem to be any added sweetener (rare for a caramel flavored tea). I don’t think I like it quite as much as Bigelow’s Salted Caramel, but it’s definitely one I will enjoy while it’s in my cupboard.

I’m a fan of camomile tea, and I’ve been trying different varieties to find one I really like. For whatever reason, so far I prefer bagged camomile to loose. The loose tends to taste slightly more herbaceous and less floral than the bagged. Also the tiny petals are a pain to clean out of a strainer. This one is no exception, but it had a better than some of the others I’ve had. Not my favorite, but definitely enjoyable.

to be honest; chamomile tastes like freaky flowers :(

you want to try a nice tea that’s herbal? try kunlun mountain snow chrysanthemum flower tea from yunnan sourcing’s com site

Kristal

Totally hear you on bagged vs loose chamomile. I really enjoy Celestial Seasonings’ Honey Vanilla Chamomile personally :)

rosebudmelissa

I really like floral teas, so that’s not a problem for me. I do want to try snow chrysanthemum, it’s definitely on my list.

For some reason I don’t tend to like chamomile flavored or many chamomile-based blends. Honey Vanilla Chamomile was too sweet for me. One of the few I have enjoyed is Stash’s Cinnamon Apple Chamomile.

Kirkoneill1988

hmm the tea i listed here tastes like red/green peppers , dill, and maybe earthy

@rosebudmelissa, ah, fair enough! Different Strokes for Different Folks ;)

OST’s Stash Sale

I’ve tried Harney and Son’s Paris before at a friend’s house, and enjoyed it so when I saw this on the list of teas OST was selling, I had to give it a try. I’m glad I did! I think I oversteeped it since it was just a bit bitter, but it had a lovely floral taste from the bergamot and a slight sweetness. I will definitely enjoy the rest of this tin.

Herbal and Decaf TTB.

I’ve never had a Tulsi tea before, and after tasting this I really don’t think it’s for me. I found the smell off-putting, but I tried a couple of sips before dumping the rest. This is not an herb I particularly like. Nice to get a chance to try it without investing a lot of money into it, though. That’s what I really like about these boxes.

what does the box say about this herb?

rosebudmelissa

I think the box was mostly promoting it’s health benefits.

Kirkoneill1988

do you still have the box? does it say anything about anxiety and depression?

rosebudmelissa

Sorry, I didn’t keep the box. I’ve found that a google search is helpful for finding out what herbs help with various health conditions, and WebMD is good for finding out any potential side effects once you have the names of particular herbs.

Kirkoneill1988

thankyou :D

rosebudmelissa

You’re welcome! I hope you find something that helps.

Herbal and Decaf TTB.

This is pretty good. It’s a light and fruity black tea. There’s only the faintest hint of bitterness as it cools – just enough to add some depth to the flavor, not at all unpleasant. This isn’t an exciting tea, but it’s not boring either. It seems like the sort of basic decaf black tea that I might reach for with some regularity.

Flavors I Dislike: cardamon, elderflower, licorice root, stevia, tulsi; artificial cherry, and almond flavors; bitter smokey, leathery, medicinal, or overly sweet teas

Allergies and Sensitivities: lavender and stevia upset my stomach

I have participated in the Overboard TTB, the Butiki Herbal Blending Box, the Butiki Educational TTB, and the Puerh Beginners Box. I ran the Herbal TTB and the Monthly TTB Club, and am currently running the Herbal and Decaf TTB.

Ratings: I rate teas based not on their objective quality, but on how much I personally liked them. I mostly do this because it’s an easy way to tell at a glance if I’ve tried a tea before and if I’d be interested in buying it. It sometimes takes a while to sort through and find out whether or not I’ve reviewed a tea without rating it.
90-100: Truly excellent tea, will buy again, could drink it every day but might save it for special occasions because it’s just that good, will miss it if it’s not in my cupboard.
75-89: Really good tea, would buy. Might be a solid everyday tea, or something that has a strong appeal but doesn’t quite amaze.
66-74: Good tea, would buy, but will also look for better
50-66: Probably wouldn’t buy this tea, but would drink it if offered
33-49: I will never buy this tea, and would probably even turn it down if it was offered to me.
1-32: I hope to never drink this tea again

I currently have a young baby, so while I’m drinking lots of tea, my activity may be sporadic.
