I toasted some sesame seeds a couple of weeks ago to put in my cereal in the morning. Today I decided to brew up a teaspoon to see if it worked as a tea. It makes for a tasty cup of tea. It’s toasty and nutty and good. It’s similar in flavor to toasted rice, but certainly not identical. I’ll have to try toasting rice in the oven, since that would take less constant attention than toasting it in a skillet does.

Groovy idea.

Mmm! I wonder how it would work with a green tea—if the (typically) shorter time & temp would give the seeds enough time to do their thing.

It works for toasted rice, so it would at least be worth trying.

This is a decent chai. It’s somewhat spicy, but no one spice is overpowering the others, and it has just a bit of sweetness in there. The ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon all kind of blur into each other. I find myself wishing for some clove or allspice, or for a bit more cinnamon. The black tea is just barely noticeable through the spices. It’s good, but not my favorite blend.

Old sample from Tea Sipper. Thank You!

There was just enough left here for a single cup. I don’t know how old this is, but it’s a little bland. It’s sweet and a bit nutty, with a definite taste of rooibos. The rooibos is a little medicinal, but not too bad. Nothing too remarkable

Having had a several more cups of this, I still say that mint and pine are a great flavor combination, but I’m not quite as pleased by this blend as I was with the first cup. It seems rather inconsistent. Sometimes it will be mostly mint or mostly pine. Sometimes the sourness of the berries will come through more strongly – which I really don’t think adds to the blend – and occasionally it will have an odd waxy mouthfeel and a chemical aftertaste. Sometimes it’s amazing, but sometimes it’s disappointing. It still makes for a nice change of pace, and I’d buy more to see what it tastes like fresh since mine is rather old, but I’m dropping the rating a bit.

I like the sound of this one. I’ve been reading a lot about pine in tea and want to try that.

rosebudmelissa

a teaspoon of rosemary brewed for 5-10 minutes makes a great pine flavored tea. Sacred Blend by Algonquin Tea Co. is another good pine tea.

Hmm. This is an odd black since it tastes much more like a green tea or light oolong. No bitterness at all though. Interesting.

Earthy +Grassy+Slightly Bitter+Caffeine = Not my favorite herb. I’m willing to try anything once, even an herb I generally don’t like by a different company or in a different blend (unless it makes me feel ill like stevia or lavender), just on the off chance that it surprises me, but this one did not.

This was from a swap with Zennen. Thank you!

I picked this up before I discovered that I don’t like Tulsi, but figured I should still give it a try. The dry leaf smells strongly of Tulsi and Pepper. It’s a little intimidating smelling. The first sip is savory and spicy with a hint of sour fruitiness. It’s not nearly as intense as the smell of the leaf would lead you to expect, which is actually a relief. I’ve never had Chartreuse so I can’t tell how accurate the flavor is, but it’s interesting. I don’t know that I’ll want more than this cup of it, but it’s definitely interesting to try!

Why is this so sweet? I don’t see anything in the ingredients listed here that accounts for the overpowering artificial sweetness. The sweetness utterly overpowers all other flavor, so even though some of those flavors are appealing, this is definitely not for me.

Flavors: Sweet

Preparation
Boiling 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
KiwiDelight

I hated this when I tried a sample. It felt oily xP

I think the only coconut tea I’ve tried that I like is Republic of Tea’s Chocolate Coconut, and even that is on the sweeter and more artifical end of teas I like.

I don’t like many green teas, and this reminds me why. This is rather bitter even though I brewed it with a splash of cold water, and I don’t like that bitterness alongside the vegetal taste of this tea. It’s not undrinkable, and might be better if I steeped it at an even lower temperature or for a shorter time, but I don’t like it enough to bother tinkering.

Sample from Kristal. Thank you!

This tastes herbaceous and ever so slightly citrusy. More like orange than lemon, unlike most citrusy herbs. It’s not bad, but not something I would seek out.

Preparation
Boiling 8 min or more 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
Kristal

Good thing it’s a tea for cold and flu lol

rosebudmelissa

I would probably prefer it in a blend myself, but I know some people really like the citrusy herbs on their own.

Bio

I drink a lot of herbal tea, and the occasional cup of traditional tea here and there. I enjoy experimenting with my own blends. I also enjoy stories, board games, music, nail polish, philosophy, science, teaching, and faith.

Flavors I like:
Tea (unflavored/dessert blacks, dark, floral or flavored oolongs, jasmine green, unflavored/fruity/floral whites)
Desert (caramel, cheesecake, chocolate, cream, honey, maple, molasses, vanilla)
Spices (allspice, anise, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, ginger)
Fruit(apple, blueberry, fig, grape, grapefruit, honeydew, lemon, lime, mango, orange, pineapple, plum, raspberry, strawberry, tangerine, watermelon)
Flowers (chamomile, chrysanthemum, hibiscus, jasmine, rose)
Nuts and seeds (coconut, hazelnut, pecan, cashew, sesame)
Grains(barley, rice)
Herbs (dandelion leaf, echinacea, green rooibos, honeybush, mint, rosemary, thyme)
Vegetables (carrot)

Flavors I Dislike: cardamon, elderflower, licorice root, stevia, tulsi; artificial cherry, and almond flavors; bitter smokey, leathery, medicinal, or overly sweet teas

Allergies and Sensitivities: lavender and stevia upset my stomach

I have participated in the Overboard TTB, the Butiki Herbal Blending Box, the Butiki Educational TTB, and the Puerh Beginners Box. I ran the Herbal TTB and the Monthly TTB Club, and am currently running the Herbal and Decaf TTB.

Ratings: I rate teas based not on their objective quality, but on how much I personally liked them. I mostly do this because it’s an easy way to tell at a glance if I’ve tried a tea before and if I’d be interested in buying it. It sometimes takes a while to sort through and find out whether or not I’ve reviewed a tea without rating it.
90-100: Truly excellent tea, will buy again, could drink it every day but might save it for special occasions because it’s just that good, will miss it if it’s not in my cupboard.
75-89: Really good tea, would buy. Might be a solid everyday tea, or something that has a strong appeal but doesn’t quite amaze.
66-74: Good tea, would buy, but will also look for better
50-66: Probably wouldn’t buy this tea, but would drink it if offered
33-49: I will never buy this tea, and would probably even turn it down if it was offered to me.
1-32: I hope to never drink this tea again

I currently have a young baby, so while I’m drinking lots of tea, my activity may be sporadic.
