So, when I left off writing notes last night I was on my way out for a date. And what a peculiar date it was…

It was a first date; and the guy seemed pretty nice beforehand. We’d had a couple really good conversations, and he was kind interesting with some of my nerdier interests – and pretty adorkable, so I was pretty excited. The date was a simple one; tea date! I swear; I’m not the one that suggested it! I feel like I must have a reputation of sorts at my local DT because I’ve been on something like eight tea dates (with different guys) at that DT store in the last year.

He picked me up, and was pretty visually nervous (plus he kept tripping over his words which was kinda cute); and off we went. At the store; he picked up a carry mug, 50g of Chocolate Chili Chai and a To Go of Jungle Ju Ju. To kind of switch things up, I let him pick out my drink – and he decided on (with no input from me) this one, iced. Oh boy…

Yeah; it’s no secret that I kind of hate this blend – but I told him he could pick, so I shut up and drank the damn thing. It actually wasn’t too bad; when he was busy looking at different cups and mugs and stuff I approached the associate and asked her to cut the steep time a few minutes short which I think definitely helped. It was certainly more peach than jasmine, and not nearly as chemical as I know it would’ve been if she’d steeped it as long as originally intended.

Added bonus from the trip; I was wearing short sleeves (so as to not irritate the new tattoo I got) so the associate was able to see my Camellia Sinensis tattoo! It’s the first time I’ve been to my local DT with short sleeves since getting it. And her reaction was great; she instantly cut out all the usual sales pitches/bullshit they have to say and had some pretty good tea convo with me! It was fun – though the date may have been a little lost/left out.

But that’s sorta when things got weirder? I know we didn’t really have anything planned in particular after grabbing tea – but I expected to like sit down and drink it or walk around the mall or something. Instead, he just kinda headed right for his car and then drove me home. So, all in all, it was like a half hour date? Which seemed very rushed/short – especially since I was having a good time! His car is a write off and it was making some questionable noises when we were driving to the mall, which is why he said he wanted to end the date (in case the car broke down) but I don’t know…

And then, when we got to my house he just kinda said he’d had a great time and hopefully we can do it again sometime. But that’s it; didn’t move in for a kiss/make a move or anything. It felt kind of weird/mixed signal-ish to me. I texted him today on break; just a casual ‘hey’ but no reply back. I guess I’ll try again in a few more days if I don’t hear from him by then. I thought he was having a fun time too but maybe I was reading the situation poorly? If that was a ‘blow off’, it was a very weird/indirect one. And not gonna lie, I’ll be a little disappointed because he seemed pretty great; but it wont be the end of the world either…

PS. I really hope you guys can see the link, but the tattoo in the top left corner (bird cage/umbrella hybrid) is the one I got! It hurt like a mother fucker today at work, but I’m also very happy with it!

The lines at the top near the point/tip look a little wonky there, but they look fine in person. It looks weirder there because of the position my arm was in when they took the picture.

I was wondering how your date went :) Interesting that his tea pick for you was so different from what he seems to like. Love the tats!

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
