So my Thursday started off really poorly, but in the end I managed to salvage the day!

It started with me just casually watching Big Brother (loving this season so far!) only to be interrupted by smoke. Turns out that at some point I had nicked my charger cord for my laptop and not noticed and now it was smoking VERY badly. I immediately unplugged it but had I been in a different room (or God forbid not at home in the first place) while it had started smoking I think I probably could have easily started an electrical fire…

So, I called my brother who’s better at tech stuff than I am and asked if he’d help me find a replacement power cord in exchange for me taking him out for lunch or something like that. He’s pretty broke right now, so he jumped on the chance for free food. We got the new cord ($62.00 – which seems like a lot), and then we decided to have lunch at this little cafe in the Cathedral area of the city called The Mercury Cafe. The Cathedral area of the city is this really old area of the city filled with those gorgeous old school houses and then a whole bunch of more “artsy” shops, boutiques, and some really nice, fancy “foodie” type restaurants. It’s my favourite area of the city, easily. The Mercury is this nice retro “mom and pop” style eatery. Really fun atmosphere.

This was kind of the turning point of the day for me; it’s been a long time since Liam and I hung out one on one and it was a fun afternoon. We just kind of caught up, and discussed his plans for Uni now that he’s graduated highschool. Plus, I got to eat probably the best bowl of vegetarian chili that I’ve had in AGES. After the diner, we went to Dessart which is this specialty candy store in the area and I picked up a couple treats for myself and then after that we stopped in at Cuppa’T since it’s also in the area. I didn’t really see anything new I wanted to buy but I did grab 50g of this tea because I was running really low. After that he came over to my place, and we watched a few episodes of The Hundred.

Capped the whole day off with a pot of my newly acquired tea while watching 10 Things I Hate About You. This tea is kind of like a spa day in a cup. Even though it always leaves me with nasty lavender soap breath I just find it so relaxing and the floral notes and sultry vanilla are to die for.

The Mercury is a neat place!

My charger once actually went up in flames on my bed and I was on the phone with my brother-in-law who was just starting to train to be a firefighter and he started saying all this technical stuff that would work to put it out but that I probably didn’t have. My response was to panic and rip the cord from the plug while grabbing the small flame to snuff it out while telling him he was gonna be a crap firefighter lol. Luckily no harm done but I had the same fear of what would have happened had I not been in the room. Also, I got one of the replacement cords that fit multiple laptops and it cost me over $70 and had to be replaced again a month later so $62 isn’t horrible. Glad you were able to salvage the day :)

Super Starling!

Unrelated to tea: My Mac battery at one point swelled up so much that I could see it expanding, in a distinct curve, away from my laptop. That replacement was even worse than the power cord (which I’ve had to replace twice). And also, 10 Things I Hate About You is one of my favorite movies. Heath Ledger is sorely missed. My edger (for gardening) is called Heath Edger in his memory.

Every time I watch something with Heath Ledger in it I wind up getting a little emotional; as far as celebrity deaths go his is probably the first one to really, really impact me emotionally and no others have really done the same since, apart from Robin Williams and Anton Yelchin…

Super Starling!

Robin Williams was ESPECIALLY tragic because the joy he inspired in others he didn’t always feel himself. Him, Heath, and David Foster Wallace (he’s an author, also a suicide) were my worst three.

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
