15695 Tasting Notes

Another tea that I steeped this week but then blanked on pretty badly while drinking it. Not as badly as the First Flush from Tea Runners though, because I at least remember thinking my first few sips were surprisingly good and flavourful with a really nice tangy kind of strawberry/cranberry note but still that cardamom finish. Not sure I’m sold on this as a chai, but snap (absent minded) impression was that is was more chutney like than expected and in a pretty great kinda way!

One of the best cups of tea that I made all week. It tasted so intensely like cola, but that’s exactly what I wanted when I picked it out! Maybe just a hint zesty in a citrus sort of way too, which was nice!

This is one of the teas from my monthly Tea Runners subscription box. I steeped it up immediately after opening it because I felt like I needed something caffeinated and more traditional, but I was so busy that afternoon that even though I drank a large mug of this tea I didn’t pay attention to it AT ALL. So I genuinely don’t remember a damn thing about the taste. Gonna have to make it again and be more mindful…

drank Judas Peach by BrutaliTeas

Steeped this one iced earlier in the week and I was surprised by how unpleasant I found it to be. The peach notes themselves were fine, though pretty unsweet, but there was a real off tasting smokiness to this tea that felt out of place and more the result of a low quality tea used than the lovely smokiness I get from other Brutalitieas blends that use Lapsang. Not smoke contamination from being blended/stored near smoky teas either. Just an off note in the base…

drank Malloween by BrutaliTeas

This has been the absolute busiest feeling week that I’ve had all year, so bare with me tonight as I work on tasting notes. They’re probably all going to be very, very short because most of my tea drinking this week has been while doing other things occupying much of my time/attention…

This is something I made during the evening after getting home from office. I was craving it all day, and the deep notes of burnt, smoky sugar were spot on for me. Like very burnt marshmallows from camping, which not everyone loves but I definitely love!

Shae

I’m also a lover of very burnt marshmallows, yep.

Mastress Alita

It’s not a mallow if it isn’t flamin’.

Kept my steep times nice and short today which let the delicate & soft honeysuckle notes from the white tea and the often missed floral undertones of blueberry really shine. It’s a straight forward blend, but it’s hard to heat a good blueberry tea when you find one!

Earlier this week I sipped on some Takachiho Koshoun to christen this absolutely stunning Japanese teacup that was unexpectedly gifted to me by two friends! Finding the perfect first tea for this teacup was surprisingly more challenging than expected. It obviously had to be from Japan but my two usual Japanese teas of preference, matcha and hojicha, didn’t feel quite right and I pretty infamously avoid most other forms of Japanese green tea…

This beautiful oolong tea totally fit the brief though! It’s quite delicate with such an intricate bouquet of floral tasting notes all weaved together; perfect to capture the beauty and absolutely ASTOUNDING level of detail and intricacy to this teacup’s design! Did I overthink it? Idk, probably – but when you have friends who go out of their way to bring you beautiful things then I think the effort is more than justified…

Gongfu!

I think I definitely expected this #oolongtea to have a floral character to it, but the specific and distinct notes of orange blossom, rose, and lilac in the early steeps did catch me a little off guard with just how floral and clear they were. Aside from that, there were delicate top notes of sweet lychee that softly bled into the body of the sip, and were met with a soft woodiness and minerality and, in one particularly nuanced steep, a bit of pithy citrus zest!

This is from my recent Spring Pu’erh haul! It’s the first tea sample from this order that I’ve steeped up because I simply couldn’t resist the description of heavy honey sweetness appealed to me so greatly! It’s actually a pretty great description for this tea though! The texture of the steeps is so soft and gentle, but the taste really does have a kind of sticky honey sweetness that lingers after each swallow! More of a deep, golden honey with some subtler floral undertones. Excited to see how this sheng progresses with some time!

This week has been pretty busy for me, so it’s been nice to fall back on some consistent favourites, and this unsmoked lapsang souchong definitely ticks that box for me! I love, love, love the almost green strawberry notes in the finish of each sip. It’s like tasting that last little bit of a strawberry before hitting the stem, where you get some of the sweet flesh but also a bit of the white pith! It’s distinct, and delicious!

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
