58 Tasting Notes

Red Velvet Cake from DAVIDsTEA
83

Hmm,I don’t think there are hardly any white chocolate chips or even chip pieces in mine. Go figure! Maybe the finished out the bottom of a larger tin when they filled up the 50g to send my way. No issue, I hadn’t noticed they were supposed to be in there!

The flavor really reminds me of Ice Cream Cake, which is one of my favorites. Other than a slightly less prominent icing flavor, this pretty much is Ice Cream Cake. It’s good, though I don’t know if I would order it again, simply because I have a large quantity of Ice Cream Cake on hand already.

Blazing Strawberries from DAVIDsTEA
85

So let me see how “in a nutshell” I can make this before I wind up rambling on and on in this tasting note.

I bought this really because of my obsession with the “A Song of Ice and Fire” books, and the catch phrase of this tea is “fire and ice” so I decided to give it a shot. And I really love DT’s Bamboozled. I bought it to be an ice tea and really have no plans of trying it hot.

First of all, you get A LOT of tea for 50g. Like, one of DT’s tins was overflowing when I filled it up with this, usually 50g only takes up about a third of the tin. So it is a very spacious tea. I doubled the amount of tea suggested and doubled the steep time as well. Mixed in two teaspoons of rock sugar while it was still hot and let it cool to about room temperature before pouring it over ice. I used ice from my parents ice machine as opposed to ice cubes I made myself, so the flavor was a bit artificial but I really attribute that to a batch of fridge made ice that added that slight chemical note. Blah. Good to know for next time though.

Flavor-wise it was a bit.. strange. A warm feeling for sure, but a somewhat lack of flavor.. mid conversation with my mother about something, I reached into a candy jar on the table and ate a Dove Dark Chocolate, then proceeded to absent-mindedly take another sip of this iced Blazing Strawberry tea. And… BAM absolute total perfection. That is what this tea is lacking… chocolate!!! For some reason, the hint of dark chocolate really brings out the strawberry flavor and melts in nicely with the subtle sweet spice.

So… since then I have blended in a handful of dark chocolate chips to the rest of my 40g or so of tea and ever brew since then has been spectacular! Go figure!!

Apple Cinnamon from Teaopia
67

Thanks to Reasoned_Melody for sending me some of this!

I really wish that the hibiscus wasn’t in this, because other than that this is a really yummy blend. That darn hibiscus is just a wee bit over powering and drowns out the sweeter apple taste. Ah well.

Going to try this one over ice and see if that makes it less tart.

Baked Apple Pie from Teaopia

Big thanks to Reasoned_Melody for sending me a bit of this in a swap!

I am always a bit cautious with apple pie type teas because they always seem to have a heavy artificial apple after-note to them, but I don’t get that feeling from this one at all! The fact that it is an oolong blend really give this tea that rich oolong consistency and the apple cinnamon aspects of this combined with that yummy warm taste really make this one a winner. I am more than pleased with this and would definitely consider ordering it!

Edit: Did a second steep on this and it brewed another nice cup of tea, second steep really brings out the earthier notes of the oolong as opposed to the sweeter apple cinnamon flavors that are much more prominent in the first steep. Increased temperature and doubled the steep time for the second round. I think a third steep would be far too weak.

Snowflake from Georgia Tea Company
78

Big thanks to my tea twin Amanda for sending me some of this to try!

I really love the combination of coconut, almond, and vanilla. This is a tea that I feel has a lot more potential then what I gave it. (Just a normal steep with sugar). I am for sure going to have to make it again and add a splash of cream (or almond milk in my lactose intolerant case) I am really interested in finding out what that would taste iced as well. Iced snowflake late anyone? Sounds good to me!

Will post a note when I try that experiment. For now, a generally good dessert black coconutty almondy tea.

Murmur from Handmade Tea

I received this in my super amazing sampler box from LiberTEAS!

I think I must have made this wrong… I just got a grassy bland flavor from this that I am sad to say that I ended up pouring out. The description sounds lovely and the tea looks delicious too. Bah.

Gingered Peach from Kally Tea
84

First to review this? I feel so special! First off let me say that I am very impressed with Kally Tea, their product packaging and everything is super spacey and I am very excited that I have a whole huge box of their teas to try!

I bought this to have as an iced tea, and I doubt that I will be trying it hot, so this is an iced review. I mixed roughly 3 teaspoons of rock sugar in about 10 oz of water and steeped 2.5 teaspoons of tea. Poured over ice this made a medium size pitcher worth of iced tea. (recipe rant, sorry!)

Now to the flavor! The balance of ginger and peach is actually rather spot on. One sip you get a really peachy note, and the next is gingery, then a mix, then more ginger, etc. I really like that about this tea! It almost creates a “What is this sip going to taste like?” (between ginger and peach)

Overall, pretty impressed and glad I found a good ginger/peach tea. I’m lucky enough to live where it is hot most of the year, so it’s nice to have a lot of variety in ice teas. I am really looking forward to tasting the rest of what I ordered as well!

Organic Tie Guan Yin “Iron Goddess” Oolong Tea (Ti Kuan Yin ) from Teavivre
97

This is such a lovely oolong and is definitely everything that a good oolong can be. In a fit of clumsiness, my tea strainer decided to burst open, so I had to strain out my cup of tea so I wasn’t drinking sludge. I was able to get a good strong 5 steeps from this over the course of the day. Delicious!

Creme Brulee from DAVIDsTEA
41

I received a sample of this with my last DavidsTea order and I have to admit, I’m pretty disappointed in this tea. For one, it doesn’t taste a thing like creme brule and the flavors don’t really make a whole lot of sense. It tastes like a really watered down version of DavidsTea’s Creme Caramel. Pretty mediocre and I’m glad I didn’t spend any money on this.

Grandma's Pumpkin Pie from Della Terra Teas
100

Really had a craving for this one today but wanted to pair it with what I had made for lunch so I decided to try it iced instead of hot. Delicious! Didn’t do anything special at all to it, just a bit of sugar as always and threw it over some ice. I was just as pleased with it iced as I was in my previous note.

Caramel Candy Apple from Della Terra Teas
100

Playing around with the steep time of this one, I did a new cup for 5 minutes. Bolder flavor but bordering on the bitter after notes. I think 4 minutes will be just perfect in the future.

Goodness this tea is so good.

Indian Summer from DAVIDsTEA
62

Lowering my rating of this by a good bit because I tried this over ice and it only brought out more of that “sun tan lotion” type jive that this tea has going on.

I really wanted to like you, indian summer, but I just don’t know.

Pumpkin Chai from DAVIDsTEA
91

I’ve never met a pumpkin chai that I didn’t like, so this one had it pretty easy coming to my taste buds. There is definitely more actual pumpkin flavor to this than chai spice, but that isn’t a bad thing, in fact it only helps give it a bit of character from any other pumpkin chai.

Over all a good tea, the flavor mix is actually one of my favorites. I can’t rant and rave about how utterly amazing it is though because DavidsTea “Toasted Marshmallow” has similar holiday spice notes and is EONS better. In fact… I need to go brew another cup of that now that I have finished this one…

Indian Summer from DAVIDsTEA
62

This tea is just… a lot of things. Not crazy delicious but not a bad tea at all. It definitely has A LOT going on, as you can tell just by reading what all is in it. I can taste watermelon and cherry very distinctly and luckily the hibiscus is hiding itself well in the mix. I am not exactly sure where the pumpkin comes into play… and I am not really sure what this tea is even really supposed to taste like. It smells like, well, sun tan lotion (a fact that I am trying to ignore). As I continue my way through the cup, the cherry flavor seems the most pronounced. Giving it a decently high rating because I think that it will be a really good iced tea. I don’t dislike it.. I’m just confused by it.

Toasted Marshmallow from DAVIDsTEA
100

As a huge fan of dessert teas and chai teas, this tea played a perfect melody on my tea tasting heart strings! If all the other teas in the world disappeared only to leave this one behind, I don’t think I would complain!

I was a little hesitant of how delicious this tea would be due to the fact that upon opening the package all I saw were little tiny marshmallows. “Where… where are the other ingredients!” They were there, just at the very bottom of the pouch (international shipping does that I suppose). Upon looking at it I really resigned myself into typing up a review saying that this tea needed, well, more tea in it and less “other stuff”. But surprisingly the taste of black tea is potent enough to still shine through.

I don’t even know where to really begin reviewing how deliciously and awesomely amazing this tea is. All I can say is that if you like chai, dessert teas, or holiday (spice like) flavored teas, then this is the tea of your dreams.

I’m going to have to do some serious stocking up on this stuff…

Carrot Cake from DAVIDsTEA
98

Why does this tea have such awful/mixed reviews?! I expected to click into this page to find this rated 85+ and to my shock and awe scrolled through a mixed bag of terrible and sub par reviews.

Well, let me just say, you should not at all judge this tea based on the low score. Nope, not at all! I was thrilled to get this in the mail today after wanting to try it for a while but having it not make the cut the last few DavidsTea orders of mine. It does not in the tiniest, smallest, slightest bit smell at all like any sort of paint or paint thinner (trust me, I work at The Home Depot, so I really would know!) Instead it smells like warm carrot cake, or (if you have ever had them) carrot cake bars.

The tea itself looks gorgeous and is a colorful orange mix that just begs to be steeped. The flavors are a yummy mix of cream cheese frosting and just out of the oven spongy carrot cake goodness. The lingering taste reminds me of a holiday spice cake, or almost of a fair/festival funnel cake or fried dough. I was worried with their being apples that the apple flavor would come across in the tea and over power the carrot and cake flavors, but that wasn’t the case at all.

So, I don’t know why this tea has all sorts of funky reviews, it’s phenomenal and I immediately dedicated a large tin to it as I am certain it is going to be one of my staple teas. Maybe DavidsTea altered the blend or something since all these reviews. Who knows. But I for one say give it a try! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

Strawberry & Vanilla from Lupicia
97

Drinking this tea again this afternoon. Note to self: next time you want tea order from Lupicia and get a decent supply of this.

Yummy yummy.

Caramel Candy Apple from Della Terra Teas

This tea is exactly like stepping into a fall festival and standing in front of a concession stand drooling over all of the caramel and candy apples shown in the windows. Only.. you don’t have to go back and forth over trying to decide if you’d rather go with a caramel or a candy apple. This is the best of both worlds!

Steep time was right at about 2 minutes.

Phenomenal tea. If you like fall teas or dessert teas or tea in general do your moth a favor and give this one a try!

S'mores from Della Terra Teas
96

Della Terra Teas has yet to disappoint me. I was beyond ecstatic when I heard they were launching a S’mores flavor tea.

Steep time was right around 2 minutes.

This wasn’t as heavily scented as the other dessert teas from DTT that I have, so I was somewhat concerned that it would not be as flavorful. Not at all the case! This tea starts out with a deep smokey black flavor that was almost a bit startling at first. Next comes the sweet chocolate hues and then creamy marshmallow notes. There is a subtle spice and the full s’mores flavor really forms on the palate after a few sips. Delicious!

I really should try this and add a bit of milk as well as I feel that would drastically bring out some of the flavors. (Being lactose intolerant I never take the time to add milk since I always forget my meds. Lazy me!)

Another lovely dessert tea.

Plum Oolong from The Tea Merchant

Plum Oolong from The Tea Merchant

Thank you to The Tea Merchant for sending out free samples!

So, I have to admit, the first steep of this did not at all impress me. The plum was a bit strong and overly sweet and I was fully prepared to be disappointed in this tea. However, this being an oolong blend, I decided to re-steep the leaves and see if the second time was any better…

It was! The “too sweet” edge of the plum was knocked out of it in the first steep, leaving a well rounded plum fruit flavor to the second round. The flavor of oolong was a good bit more pronounced in the second steep as well. The second go-around really made all the difference.

I think I am going to try cold brewing this and see what happens. If nothing else, I’ll pour out the first minutes tea and just drink the second batch.
