2145 Tasting Notes
Thank you Stacy for including this in my last order.
I’ve had this particular oolong before, blended in Butiki’s Maple Pecan Oolong, but I wanted to taste it on its own so I selected it as a sample with my last order. It has a very smooth flavor and is just a little bit lighter than I’m accustomed to seeing in an oolong. The flavor is slightly roasted, almost woody tasting, with a hint of sweetness. What is lacking is any sort of floral flavor, but that isn’t bad, it just makes it stand out from the oolongs that I’m prone to drinking.
This isn’t a tea I would order on its own, but I love some of the blends that it is used in. In fact, Maple Pecan Oolong is going to be my go-to tea around Thanksgiving.
Preparation
Thanks go to JustJames for sending this to me in our epic swap.
I love oolong, so this immediately intrigued me because I’ve never had a chocolate oolong before. Honestly, I think this one has a lot of potential, but my first attempt using 1t per 6oz left it a little weak tasting. For my next attempt I’ll double the leaf and see if that helps. If all else fails, I can see this making a decent latte.
The scent is a heavy on the coconut, but the coconut only adds a hint of sweetness to the final brew. The chocolate flavoring is more of a background note. I do like that it tastes more realistic than a lot of the artificially flavored chocolate teas that I’ve had. I got the impression of dark chocolate, but it left me wanting more. Several of the ingredients I couldn’t taste while this was hot. The licorice really starts to stand out at the end of each sip once this has cooled.
Preparation
I was a bit busy this morning and after my first sip of this forgot about drinking it and it sat for a few hours. The sip or two I had hot was extremely bitter, I probably would have dumped out the cup if I hadn’t forgotten about it. When I got home this afternoon I tried another few sips at room temperature. It wasn’t as bitter as before, but it did have an overwhelming amount of lime flavoring. What was missing was the pie aspect, so I was a little disappointed.
I have an ounce of this so I’m going to play around with a short cold-steep to see if I can cut down on the overwhelming lime flavor.
EDITED This poor cup of tea, it sat undrank and unloved on my table for over 24hrs. I took a sip of it this morning and surprisingly the lime flavor had mellowed even more and I was able to taste some of the cream flavoring.
