2145 Tasting Notes

I love spiced teas, but I don’t get to drink them very often because of my allergies. They always smell so good and remind me of the holidays. When I saw that Della Terra had released a summer spiced plum I knew I had to try it. Since the new fridge came in yesterday, bright and early at 7am, I was finally able to cold steep something and have it be really cold. I’m excited!

Anyway, I’m excited about this tea as well, when I opened up the package it smelled so good. I couldn’t really detect a plum scent, but all the spices sure were there. Once steeped I noticed something, my tea shimmered, not sparkled, but shimmered very faintly as the light hit it. It was very pretty, somewhat mesmerizing, and temporarily distracted me from tasting my tea.

The tea itself was very spicy and I didn’t notice a plum flavor to it, just a slight sweetness every once in awhile. This may be because I cold steeped it and the spices took over. I wish I had saved enough of this one to find out if it would taste any different hot, but I used the whole try me sized package for my cold steep. I thought this was a very yummy tea, but wish the plum would have stood out above the spices.

I purchased the 5 for $5 sampler in late spring and this was the first one I decided to try. I have recently fallen in love with Tieguanyin and Verdant’s Autumn harvest immediately struck me with how different it was from the Spring harvest Tieguanyin teas that normally drink.

I loved the subtly sweet floral notes that stand out in the first steep of this tea. I actually think that it may be my favorite, which is unusual for me, I normally prefer the second or third steep most with Tieguanyin. It could just be my sweet tooth talking since I am a sucker for anything sweet.

I was impressed with the fact that I was able to resteep this so many times. I finally stopped around 6, but only because I need to switch to an herbal tea if I want to get any sleep tonight. I wish I would have purchased more than an ounce of this when it had an extra 25% off the clearance price.

Thanks to scribbles for sending me this tea in our swap.

The black base of this tea was really strong, and while I normally enjoy a good strong cup of black tea, I didn’t really care for this one. Even when steeped at 4 minutes (the lowest suggested time) I found this to have a strong astringency and a very bitter taste from the lemon and orange.

This might have more potential as a cold steep since that may cut down on the bitterness and astringency.

The only way I drink this one is as a cold brew…now that I have rock sugar, I expect it will taste like Nestea ice tea.

so DT with a strong tea base exists ! I’ve always been disappointed by their teas because I’ve been unable to taste the tea itself

I am always interested in swapping so if you see anything in my cupboard that you want to try just send me a message. Please keep in mind that I order most of my teas in sample sizes and may not have a lot to swap. I’m also trying to keep my swaps limited to one a month so I don’t break the bank.

My favorite tea companies to order from are American Tea Room, Rishi, TeaVivre, and Single Origin Teas, however I am constantly lured away from my favorites by a good sale.

Ingredients I love in tea
rose, peach, oolong, osmanthus, vanilla, marshmallow root and peppermint

Ingredients I dislike in tea:
spearmint, chocolate, orange, hibiscus, sage and for the most part lemon.

I am a firm believer that sage only belongs in my thanksgiving stuffing/dressing and absolutely not in my tea.

Allergies
Cinnamon, Chocolate, Burdock Root, and Goji Berries

Teawares:
FORLIFE Curve Teapot, 24oz
Adagio ingenuiTEA, 16oz
Adagio Iced ingenuiTEA, 32oz
Zojirushi Water Pot, 4L
Libbey Country Fair drinking jars for ice tea
TeaVivre Travel Gaiwan

Rating Guidelines:

100 – 90: Pantry essential and some of my all time favorites that I can’t live without.

89 – 80: You’ll have a pretty good chance of finding this is my pantry on a regular basis, but it isn’t the end of the world if I run out.

79 – 70: I might consider restocking this at some point if the price was right.

69 – 40: Not undrinkable, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it again.

39 – 20: What in the world were they thinking? Probably still finished this just because I hate to waste anything.

19 – 0: Wow, that’s so terrible chances are pretty good I dumped it out and gave away the rest.

My current top five favorite teas:

China Black – Rishi Tea
Earl Grey Cream – Zen Tea
Lemoncello – American Tea Room
Nonpareil Anxi Qing Xiang TieGuanYin Oolong – TeaVivre
White Tea Rose Mélange – Rishi Tea
