This is one of the best tasting oolongs I’ve had. The flavor has a depth and richness that is hard to describe, and hard to tease apart. I just know that I savored this tea, and it made me feel mellow and blissful. This is a comfort tea.

I picked up this at Ten Ren. This is the $60/lb version of the Green Tung Ting Oolong Tea – there is no other way to differentiate between the different types available for purchase at the shop other than price. It wasn’t the cheapest, and it wasn’t the most expensive. I found it rather off. It was dry, like a white tea, but tasted fresh like green, and I didn’t notice the subtle flowery notes that I associate with Oolong. That said, I didn’t find it unpleasant and I will continue drinking it. Which is a good thing since the sales clerk wouldn’t let me purchase any less than 4 oz of the tea.

This smells yummy and very strong. Thankfully, the butterscotch flavor is subtle and not overpowering. I can get a hint of it, but it’s more a “something extra” on top of the tea. Not my favorite flavored tea, but passable.

This is a very light tea that tastes almost like a green tea, but still has all the lovely subtle oolong notes. At first sip, it seemed almost weak but the flavor really came alive in each successive sip. Lovely.

drank Honeydew White Tea by Inko's

Well, I finished it. I was not impressed, though. The honeydew flavor tasted artificial and off. It was also sweeter than it needed to be.

This is the second white tea I’ve tried from this company, and like the first, this is an incredibly dry tea. I only steeped it for 3 minutes but as soon as I smelled it, I felt the mucus membranes in my nostrils shriveling up.

The taste, thankfully, isn’t as dry and it is still drinkable. I think I should have tried steeping for only a minute or two instead of three full minutes.

Under the dryness, the flavor is extremely pleasant. There are slight floral hints which fade into smoky dryness as the tea passes along my tongue. Very nice but I don’t think I’ll be drinking this regularly in the summer months. May be more welcome when the weather turns cooler.

drank Four Leaves Ripe by Mandala Tea

I’m becoming convinced pu-erh tea is wasted on me. It’s tasty but I can’t taste any subtly in it at all. It tastes like generic tea I used to get at Chinese restaurants when I was a child (and it probably is, in fact) so I don’t have the sophisticated palate to appreciate it.

Hi Debbie! Garret from Mandala Tea here, wishing you a tea-riffic day. I am wondering if it is just the ripened style of pu’er that you do not care for. Have you ventured into raw pu’er before? Two different worlds, ripe and raw. There are many lovers of sheng (raw) pu’er who absolutely despise shu (ripe) pu’er. It may be worth checking into. Perhaps starting with a silver needle raw tea to start and see where that takes you. You may find a whole new world open up to you. Let me know if I can help in any way. Have a great day!

drank Hoji-Cha (loose) by Yamamotoyama

After a hard night’s working organizing the tea cupboard and rearranging it for optimal accessibility and pleasure to the eye, I settled in for a cup of this tea. I had found a bag of this at the H-Mart near me and picked it up (it was $4. Why not?) and am very very pleased with this. It’s a roasted green tea, and is delicious. The flavor is quite light, despite it being roasted, and is very smooth and soothing. I can see myself enjoying a cup of this during a cold winter’s day.

It’s a bit too heavy for DC summertime but I’ll be pulling this back out once the weather turns.

Decent enough, but it’s lacks the depth of the loose stuff. Good in a pinch, though. The taste leans more towards the roasted rice than the green tea, though I can taste the tea more as an aftertaste.

drank Black Tea Latte by Teas'Tea

This is different than Teas’Tea’s Matcha latte. It’s more traditionally flavored for those who might be turned off by the Matcha. Smooth and sweet. I actually think it’s overly sweet but I don’t normally like sweetened tea.

Bio

I’m a tea-aholic. I’ve always loved tea. It is soothing and warm and comforting. I always had it when we went out to eat as a child so my first association is with rich and delicious food.

As an adult, I’m learning to enjoy tea on its own merits, and bask in its subtleties and varieties. The ritual of making a cup of tea is instantly relaxing.

I prefer oolong and white teas, followed by greens. For the most part, I don’t like straight black tea, but appreciate it as part of a blend or flavored. I’ve learned to love the world of flavored teas out there.

I’m slowly learning to appreciate rooibos blends, which I started drinking for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Love: Oolong, almond, coconut, peach
Hate: Ginger
