Pulled out my trusty Southern Living Annual Recipes (2001) cookbook to make some sweet tea last night. My mom was appalled when I told her once that I used a cookbook to make sweet tea. Who needs a recipe to make sweet tea?? I didn’t come out of the womb with it in my brain, goodness.

I used 7 teabags of Lipton decaf and 1 teabag of Twinings EG. It came out a little bitter but it’s not bad. It helps with my sweet tea craving at least. Next time I’ll just use a little less tea.

I’ve got a couple of those cookbooks gathering dust on the shelf :)

I don’t cook from them often, but I do have a few favorite recipes in each that I like. Plus, I sometimes just like flipping through them. These and the Calling All Cooks ones. Do you have any of those? The recipes in there can be wild!

Not familiar with that series. These days, I assemble and reheat more than I actually cook, but the recipes that actually get used are from my sister’s recipe file (family stuff assembled over the years) and a couple of what my husband calls “real people” cookbooks … comb-bound fundraiser cookbooks with stuff collected from the good ladies of First Baptist in Lamar MO.

I haven’t been typing up notes lately. I keep starting them and then let them sit until long after my cup is cold. Not much motivation lately for some reason. Maybe it’s because I haven’t had any memorable teas lately? Today I decided to take a break from my sipdown list and drink a blend I really love. The last time I made this, it didn’t have any flavor and I was so bummed. This time, I upped the amount of tea leaves and the result was a deep, malty base with chocolate and sweet pastry. So good!

That sounds delicious!

I love this one so much! It reminds me of my favorite Pop Tarts, so it might be more of a nostalgia thing lol.

tea-sipper

WHICH poptarts does this remind you of, shae? I’m intrigued.

Shae

The chocolate chip poptarts! But you have to heat them until the chocolate is near boiling in the middle for the full effect. :D

Oh cool! I’m a HUGE Poptarts fanatic but I’m not sure if I can call myself that if I haven’t tried ALL the flavors yet, including the chocolate chip. Looks good though!

gmathis

Our current favorite Pop Tart is the Frosted Crisp Apple.

tea-sipper

OH I haven’t tried the apple yet either..

Shae

I haven’t tried the apple one either! I’ll look for that one.

Profile

Bio

Lifetime student. Lover of books and paper and ink. Kitchen dweller. Aspiring herbalist, excessively proud cat lady, and tea fanatic. Thirty-something elder millennial. She/her.

I love flavored black teas most of all, always with cream and honey. I enjoy floral and fruity teas, as well as flavored or scented ones. I’m not overly fond of green or white teas, but I’ve found a few that I enjoy.

I’m open to tea swaps and/or just sharing what’s in my tea cabinet! Please reach out if you see something I have that you’d like to try. I do my best to update my cupboard regularly.

Favorites
Any and all black teas, smoky teas, raspberry, strawberry, red fruits, bergamot, chai spices, floral teas, caramel/toffee, jasmine, rose, vanilla, peaches, plums, valerian root, cinnamon, cardamom

Not a huge fan
White teas, green teas, artificial sweeteners, sarsaparilla, licorice, lemongrass, lavender, hot hibiscus, hibiscus in black tea blends

Rating Scale

1-20: By far, one of the worst teas I’ve tasted. I most certainly will not finish my cup and will likely “gift” the rest to my sweet husband, James, who almost always enjoys the teas I dislike (and vice versa).

21-49: This tea is not good, but if I mix it with another tea or find another steeping method I might be able to finish it.

50-69: This one is just okay. I might drink it again if someone were to give it to me, but I probably won’t be buying more for myself.

70-79: This is a consistently good tea. It’s reliable but not necessarily special.

80-90: This one is a notch above the rest and I would gladly enjoy a cup of it any day of the week. I’ll likely be keeping this in my cupboard, but it isn’t one of my all-time favorites.

91-95: One small change and this tea would be perfect. I’ll definitely have a stash of this in my kitchen if you come over for tea.

96-100: No words can describe this tea. It’s an experience, an aha moment. Closed eyes, wide smile, encompassing warmth. Absolutely incredible. Perfect.
