Strawberry Zabaglione

Black Tea by 52teas

This was a suggestion from one of our customers, and I spent an hour digging through my email folders and searching our facebook page, but I couldn’t find the original suggestion anywhere, so I couldn’t put his or her name on the blend.

Anyway, when I first got the suggestion, I realized I was going to have to MAKE some Zabaglione to try, because not only had I not tried it before, but I had never HEARD of it before. Well after trying it (for those of you who never have, I would say it is something like a custardy (flavor, not texture) whipped cream with a hint of wine. After trying it, I was not at all sure that we would be able to make a tea that hinted of the complexity of Zabaglione, but after some trial and error, we now have…

BIG thank you to Azzrian for this sample!
Best served lukewarm!
This is the second time I made this, the first time drunk hot and oversteeped (3-4 min). It was terrible!
But… then I cut the steep time down and it got a little better. Added 1/4 tsp sugar and the burnt taste seemed to mellow out.
And then! as the cup cooled, it got really good!! ohmygoodness, the creamy custard really came out. Only a hint of strawberry but hey I don’t mind. This is fantastic!
SO glad I discovered the proper way to enjoy this delightful creation. I usually prefer my tea hot, so this is a surprise for me! walking upstairs with my tea, I was preparing to give this a ho hum rating. Lucky I checked my email first or I’d have alot of editing to do :)

BTW… for weeks the site has been bugged up, and I’ve been unable to view my notices. I’d click on them and nothing happened! then today, they are all gone. All 1600 of them… so if I’ve missed any comments, please forgive me! Ignorance is not bliss I tell ya :)

Sample sipdown!!
I accidentally oversteeped by about 25 seconds so my cup was a tad harsh. Still very tasty, though I wouldn’t order more, I’d rather try the rest of what 52Teas has to offer! Thanks again Azzrian :)

Will Work For Tea

I’ve had my eye on this one for awhile. With each 52teas order (and there have been many already!), this one never made it to the final purchase round. It’s jumped in my cart a couple times, but each time I end up taking it out in favor of a more unique/limited creation. So thank you to Awkward Soul for sharing a couple cups worth and satisfying my curiosity about this one.

This smells delicious before taking a 3-minute hot bath. After infusion, the tea liquor smells creamy and strawberryish, but less so than the dry leaf did. First few sips leave me a little underwhelmed… Added more rock sugar than I care to admit and it started to be a little tastier.

I do have the leaves resteeping in the fridge, so we’ll see if that turns out to be any different.

This isn’t something I’d purchase, but am glad to cross off another tea from my shopping list.

(unabashed gushing here :)):

This is the most perfect strawberry-flavored tea! I taste creamy custard, vanilla and strawberries (glorious strawberries!) all floating atop a delicious black tea base. The aroma is heaven in a cup!

I love it!

Can’t wait to see what you guys think of this one. It has been a HUGE hit here at the shop. Only five left!

What I REALLY wanted this morning was a matcha latte lol but since I’m trying to get a bite to eat and get down to the gym before its too late in the day I opted for a new tea instead. I’ll reward myself with the matcha shake or latter when I get home. :)

This is a bit underwhelming. I’m not sure if I over steeped or over heated this tea but there’s an underlying bitterness that I’ll need to play around with to see if I can get rid of. Th dry scent of the tea is divine! And fter brewing there’s much more creaminess than strawberry…but the taste, well it’s like a creamy black. I’m not getting the strawberry. Holding off rating this until I get a chance to play with more of it :) but still a decent cup of tea to kick off the day.

So I’m finally giving this one a rating. I tried this at work today, and used water that wasn’t quite boiling. That seems to have helped, though it’s still not as exciting as i hoped it would be. It still smells DIVINE!I just wish the strawberry was more intense. I can get more of the creamy taste out of this brew but it’s still pretty bland.

I’m almost tempted to get Azzrian to send me some of hers to see if this is a bad batch or something. I really wanted to like this tea more than i do :( Here’s hoping the blueberry zabaglione on it’s way is better.

Came home after a looooong day of testing and rewriting people’s terrible terrible English. Not that you’d be able to tell from most of my posts, but I write well, and part of my job is content management for what our clients see. They haven’t had anyone really paying attention to this stuff for a while and it’s appalling what we put in front of clients. Needless to say its my job to clean it up!

We hit the gym on the way home, which was nice cause I’ve been slacking but part way through my run I started feeling awful. So now I’m home with a splitting headache and sore legs. My tummy doesn’t feel well either so I suspect the stress is getting to me. On the plus side my dearest wonderful other half bought me some tea because I have to cut back for a bit because funds are tight AND made me dinner.

….and my tea order from Stacy arrived! In the 10 days! Of course now I REALLY do have too many teas…especially with the travelling tea box on its way. On the plus side ill get to send some of my teas off to other homes :)

Ok azzrian! I think I have this one figured out. Bumping the rating up on this one now that I’ve gotten the hang of it. NOW I can taste the creaminess with the strawberry. Sooo note to self, revisit all my 52 teas and brew them for less time :) guess I should have tried that earlier but I guess i just wasn’t thinking. This, this is pretty darn good now :)

Quick cuppa to get me out the door this morning. Aaaalllmost done this but still enough to eek out a few more cups. Tasty strawberry creamy goodness.

I need a good raspberry tea. Anyone?

I am loving this strawberry tea and the strawberry pie tea from frank but it occurs to me I am missing a raspberry tea. Anyone..on that note boooooo on Monday being almost over. Not nearly enough tea in me today and not nearly enough things finished but oh well. Still a great day overall.

mmmm pre-dinner drink heh no one said it had to be a cocktail! I am so happy i figured this tea out again. It makes me much happier to be drinking it again without the bitterness. I am still on my weird strawberry kick so this is a nice creamy version until i make my strawberry pie later lol

This tastes a little funny today but I tight that’s from my nose and throat being all messed up. It’s more creamy than strawberry but that’s alright :)

Sip down!

Woot woot!

I’d totally buy this again once I get through some of my other teas. :)

Up from nap…need tea before dinner. Still feeling like someone ran me over. At least the strawberry is delicious and wonderful. Yay for hot tea that’s tasty.

Shhhhhhh don’t tell blueberry, but I’m back to loving strawberry a bit more. It’ll be our little steepster secret. ;)

Well it’s been a month since i last tried this one. Bumping the rating up a bit but this apparently is just not a tea for me. I get a lot of bitterness in this regardless of how hot/how long i seem to steep it. Not a lot of strawberry flavour either. I’ll stick with the blueberry version :)

see previous tasting notes. just logging to track. head is pounding so I can’t write much

Nom nom nom nom. Go go strawberry teas!

Just need to find some cherry and raspberry teas that I love too :)

Many thanks to Emilie for this generous sample!

First of all, I have no idea what zabaglione is supposed to taste like, but if it tasted like this tea, it would be delicious.

The strawberries are nice and fresh, and I am getting kinda a burnt creamy taste to this. The black base is there for sure. I am getting a little bit of bitterness in this one though. The bitterness is bearable because of the sweetness of the berries and creamy taste, but I would rather it not be bitter.

I have some more sample to play with, so I will try a shorter steep or cooler water next time.

Backlogging from yesterday.

This short steep time is definitely the way to go. I didn’t get any bitterness this time, and the creamy taste comes through more.

The water was boiled and then I got distracted, so it had a little bit of time to cool, so that probably helped too.

Yum, I might have to order this on my next 52teas order. Increasing the rating

Mmmm. Having a morning snack of this tea paired with a whole wheat chocolate strawberry muffin. Delicious! Off to a great start to the day

This one came with my order today too! It was hard to decide which to try first, the Dreamsicle or the Strawberry, but my love for Darjeeling won out.

OK… so I’ve never had zabaglione… but I have had custard… and this has a very creamy, custard-ish flavor to it. The strawberry flavor is softer in the beginning, but at the end of the sip you can really taste it.

YUM! It is very good.

Frank… if you’re reading this (and I know that you are… yep… I can see you) next week make something that I will not be interested in. Please. I should not be buying any more tea for at least a couple of weeks. So make a pu-erh or a Lapsang Souchong blend. OK? Or even a Salvadorian Dung Beetle flavored tea. Something that I’ll have no interest in purchasing. OK? Thanks.

This tea is awesome!

I’m not sure exactly how this little bit of Strawberry Zabaglione found its way back into my stash… I was sure that I had sent the last little bit out somewhere. But, I’m glad I found it, because I wanted something like this so that I could test out my taste buds to see how they’re functioning.

I’m feeling so much better than I was, my ears are still what I want to call “cloudy” – where it feels like I’ve got ear plugs in my ears or something because everything sounds muffled. My throat feels better, my eyes are still very itchy and it takes every ounce of willpower that I have (and I haven’t a lot of it) to keep from rubbing them. I still have the occasional cough, but, really, the most difficult thing for me is my taste buds, because I have tons of tea to be tasting and reviewing here, and I need my taste buds to be functioning!

Well, I can definitely taste the strawberry and the creaminess of the custard. It’s yummy, although, it does still taste a bit muffled. sigh I guess no reviewing for today. But, it does give me hope for tomorrow. I think by tomorrow, I should be back in the saddle. At least I hope so!

Following mrawlins2 lead, I decided to brew some of this with just a pinch of Tippy Earl Grey from Golden Moon. The result is a completely different tea! I can’t believe how different this tastes with the addition of so little of the Tippy Earl Grey. It’s fantastic (of course, it was fantastic without the addition too).

This cup is creamy, custardy, strawberry goodness! YUM!

Enjoying a cup of this today. It’s been a little while since I’ve had some of this.

Lovely strawberry flavor, I love the creamy custard flavor with it… a really beautiful tasting tea! Even though the days are definitely getting cooler, and autumn is almost here (this past week, it seemed like it was here)… this tea reminds me of the best of summer!

I bought this based on the reviews here on Steepster and because the teas I have tried from 52teas have been great. This is no exception.

The smell of the dry leaf is fantastic, so rich! So full of berries! There are dried berries in the pouch making this a very pretty tea to look at, as well.

I made the first cup conservatively based on other reviews. I used water just below boiling and about a 3 1/2 minute steep. The steeped tea is very well balanced for the tea lover. Though this has flavors added, the black tea base isn’t covered up and it isn’t shy, but it isn’t biting me either! It is a solid foundation for the flavors.

I thought I might want to add milk and/or sugar to it to make it a super ecadent dessert treat, but after one sip I changed my mind. There is such a creaminess to this that it is as if you have already added cream…not milk, but cream. And the fruity strawberries are just the right balance of sweet and tart, not sour. I guess if you are used to sugar in your tea, you would love this with it, but I think it is great without.

This reminds me a little of Marco Polo, but totally food oriented where MP has floral notes added and isn’t as creamy.

This is my preview cup for tea party day. I need to come up with something special to serve with this! I wish I could make a real strawberry zabaglione. Who knows? Maybe I can. :)

I struggled with this one because of its name !
Zabaglione …typically italian…what’s zabaglione ?…hehe it seems to be what we call in French a Sabayon…Ok I know now what I’am going to drink ! yeah seems exiting now!
The dry leaf scent is absolutely wild strawberries to me. After steeping, this is a pleasant black tea base (not bitter) with creamy strawberries.

It’s a yummy dessert tea but it’s not a sabayon/zabaglione to me – I don’t get the typical sugared alcohol taste we get in a zabaglione, it’s quite different but good !

Not something I would stock but nice, thank you Azzrian for sharing :)

This is an amazing strawberry black tea. I can’t wait till we get another run of good warm weather to try this iced.

As with many of 52teas black teas, it does take some minor considerations to get the absolute most out of the flavor. I tend to favor heating the water so it is hot, not boiling. It’s usually hot enough that I can blow on and sip immediately, without scalding myself. (This is perfect for me because I am always a bit impatient to take that first sip of tea).

I made this tea yesterday to enjoy during our last major design meeting before the construction starts. Becky, our designer, was mid-sentence explaining something when she took a sip and said “wow that tea is so delicious”. I enjoyed mine black, and I put 2 sugars in hers upon her request (I used yellow sugar).

Off the top of my head, I can think of 4 specific flavors of black 52teas that are absolute must haves in my tea cupboard (there are probably many more). This is one of them!

This is a backlog. I apologise in advance, but it’s difficult for me to write backlogs. Expect some jumping back and forth between tenses like a frog on a hot rock.

In the very beginning when this one was first offered from 52teas, I wasn’t really all that interested. At the time I didn’t really need a berry tea, and if I did, I’d have chosen a regular strawberry. I tend to rather like berry teas though (with real non-hibiscus-y imposters in them), so I’m actually a little surprised with myself for this.

Then I started seeing some posts about it, with really good reviews and I started to wonder if my initial lack of interest might have been a mistake. Just as I had decided to definitely change that and when time came for me to place my next order, it was gone. Woe!

Luckily I was told that a reblend was planned so I placed my order and Frank was kind enough to set it aside for me until he could include this one (and until I came home from holiday, but that’s a different story).

The dry leaf has an interesting aroma. There is strawberry and something lemon-y right at front and a creamy custard-y base underneath. It’s very sweet smelling and very dessert-like.

After steeping it’s just custard. Custard custard custard. Totally custard. There is a little bit of berry on the side, but primarily we’re talking custard here. I’ve noticed this happening in complexly flavoured blacks. If one note is definitely stronger than another in the dry leaf, it’ll be the other way around after steeping.

The taste is quite interesting. It’s definitely strawberry-y but not overly so. I was a bit concerned about the heavy custard-y aroma. I like custard, but I’m not sure I’d want to actually drink it, but the custard flavour only really show up in the aftertaste. This is really nice. Not so much a flavoured tea as it’s more like a dessert with a cuppa on the side all in liquid form. As it cooled, however, it developed a certain tartness which I could have lived without.

This is definitely worth some experiments. I think some additives here might be fun to try.

I had a cup of this last night, and I was surprised to see that I’ve used half the leaves already. I didn’t think I’d been drinking it that much…

As an experiment I added some of my vanilla black from Whittard of Chelsea to see if it would bring out the custard-y qualities more.

It certainly did. It was very very custard-y and the strawberries got completely drowned. It was almost cloyingly sweet and acquired a great deal of astringency at the end of the sip.

If you like something very sweet, you might like this combination. Personally I wasn’t convinced by it and I see no reason to take this line of experimentation any further.

Having a mad craving for sweets and cake and desserts tonight, so I made up a cup of this one instead. On a whim I added some of the cacao tisane thingie that Wombatgirl sent me, thinking maybe it would give it some sort of chocolate covered strawberry sort of feel to it.

I can’t really recommend doing this, to be honest. I mean, it’s not bad as such. It’s just not what I was expecting to get. The cacao shells have completely overwhelmed the flavouring that was already there, so now it just tastes like any other plain chocolate flavoured tea. I think I gave it too much cacao shell.

Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Thank you Erin for sending me some of this tea! You are awesome.

I love how this tea looks, smells and tastes. It’s certainly a winner in my book. The leaves are nice long black tea leaves with bright exuberant pieces of strawberry flair mixed in. I can’t believe how much strawberry was added to this tea. It is TOO good. I wish I had much more of this tea as I’m already wanting a second cup. (I had my first this morning on the way to work). It was a great morning pick me up. The flavor isn’t as creamy as my other strawberry love, Marco Polo, but it is much stronger on the strawberry (from what I can remember). Yummm….making another pot before I watch Biggest Loser.

PS-thanks to AmazonV for the multiple attempts at perfecting this tea and recording your steep times/temps. This helped me brew the perfect cup this morning!

Decided to brew up a full pot of this to enjoy during the Chicago 2011 blizzard. Got out of work early and don’t have to go in tomorrow so I’m celebrating with a caffeinated tea at 8:48pm. All schools are closed, not sure if all of the businesses are, but with the 15 plus inches of snow with winds of 50-60mph I’m sure not much will be open.

I knew I’d want to wait to open this fresh pouch of Strawberry Zabaglione for a special day, and today called for just that. Curling up with my cats, my hubby and the steepster tastelogs to catch up on what I’ve missed this week. I missed this tea. It is such a great strawberry tea. I will have to try a cup with cream and sugar to see if it meets my Marco Polo expectations. If so, farewell Marco Polo…another 52teas order awaits in my near future.

Think I may have steeped this too long today. It’s tasting more of black tea and zabaglione and not the bright tart strawberries from the first few cups. That, or I need to shake up the bag and get more berry parts in the brew. Still a good cuppa, just different.

Yum. Had a large mug of this this morning. Much thanks to Erin for sending me a sample of this tea. I wish I hadn’t waited so long to try and buy it…it is gone. But there is hope, sounds like a reblend may be in the works. See the discussions.

52teas has been on a roll lately. They’ve been producing blends that are all appealing to me, and when I try them, the wonderful descriptions turn out to be true! It seems like I spend a lot of time kissing Frank’s you-know-what on here, but it is sincere.

The package was full of bright red gorgeous strawberry hunks. I can smell this cup of tea sitting next to me on the table, that’s how strong the aroma is. The aroma is more sweet and creamy than tart and berry-like.

This is really good. It’s creamy in the wonderful way that coats your entire mouth. That sensation is complemented quite nicely by the strawberries, which I imagine would be even stronger if I had added sweetener to this cup. The strawberry taste lingers on your tongue. Another fantastic 52teas blend!

Is this possibly better than Marco Polo? The strawberry flavor seems to be stonger than the classic Mariage Freres blend. The berry flavor is not tart but delightful w/some creaminess in the background.

This one’s bright strawberry flavor puts Marco Polo to shame.

This is a sample from Sandy by way of Azzrian. Thanks guys!

I don’t have many fruity teas but this is one really good strawberry tea. I taste strawberries and cream and/or custard. The flavoring is done well with out being too heavy and fake feeling. I think the base plays nice, seems to be a brisk but not sharp or bitter. A very nice cup.

I tried Strawberry Zabaglione last night and it made for a fantastic dessert! I’m so pissed at myself for not buying this one when it was still available from 52teas. The strawberry is very natural tasting and the black tea doesn’t overpower in this blend. A little coconut cream and raw sugar made this tea sing! My husband drank 3/4 of my cup when I wasn’t looking because it’s steal from your family good.

A big thank you (((hug))) to Ashley for sharing this fantastico tea with me :)

I got this as a sample in my box of teas from LiberTeas on teatra.de and am finally getting to it. In my ongoing effort to manage my stash, the beau and I have been drinking a lot of teas that we only have a small amount of (or don’t really like) to try to cull the numbers a bit. There was just enough in this sample for a good sized pot, so we went for it.

Steeped in boiling water for 2.5 – 3 minutes, this yields a deep brown liquor with a honeyed black tea aroma. It smells sweet and appealing, though not of strawberries. First sips are a nice sweet black tea with a hint of fruity something behind it. Almost like a jam flavour, and it is a thicker mouthfeel. The black tea is nice and unassuming, not too brisk, bold or malty. Frequently I have an issue with 52Teas black tea base, but this works, so far.

I have never had zabaglione, but am loving the jamminess I get while this tea is hot. Having just googled zabaglione I don’t really know why I am getting jam flavours, but that’s okay. I can tell already that this is a tea to enjoy hot because as it cools the typical bitterness I experience in 52Teas black teas is coming forward (which I hate!) All in all, this is lovely while hot but the bitterness just isn’t my friend. I am considering sweetening this to mask the bitterness, but I don’t like making additions to my tea. Ah well, it was nice to try!

EDIT: Added a bit of milk about halfway through the cup to cut the bitterness. With milk, it’s a bit more bearable in terms of bitterness, but it also masks the hint of strawberry I was getting. Now it tastes almost as if I have a generic orange pekoe tea with some milk thrown in, and a bit of something sweet/fruity. Disappointing.

I received this from Azzrian as a thank you from our iced tea swap. Too kind.
The dry notes smells lightly and sweetly of strawberry and keeps this as it steeps.
It tastes creamy and slightly sweet I’m guessing from the strawberries although I can’t really taste them. oh wait… it has cooled and I’m getting a tart taste hmmm maybe bitter (I of course forgot about it steeping because I was too busy digging through my new tea package).
I am enjoying this tea even without the strawberry flavour.
Two cups of black tea this morning I think I am going to be one wired girl this afternoon.

Another sample from Azzrian!

Dry, there wasn’t a ton of smell to this tea, but once steeped, holy strawberries! It smells ridiculously delicious!

And the taste?? Equally delicious. Fruity strawberry backed by black tea. I have no idea what ‘zabaglione’ is though. The only thing I’m not much caring for is the astringency I’m getting from the black tea. It’s a little overwhelming; perhaps I should try a 3 minute infusion instead.

So although delicious, it hasn’t hit the ranks of Mayan Chocolate Chai yet… I think that might be difficult!

ETA: As the tea cooled, I liked it more – some more fruitiness and creaminess came out. Yum! However, the second steep is pretty weak. Probably wouldn’t bother a second time unless I was really in the mood (or perhaps if the first infusion was only 3 minutes, the second would be better).

Sorry guys… I’m so spammy late at night when I drink tea!

Anyways, two to go… this one’s a sipdown of a sample Azzrian sent me in our first of many swaps! I steeped the tea for a bit of a shorter time this attempt (although I meant to only give it 3 minutes, not 3.5). I think it definitely cut down on the astringency to some extent, but I really wish I has paid more attention and nicked off that additional 30 seconds, and there definitely is still a bit. Much like Blueberry Zabaglione, I don’t know what flavours aside from strawberry I’m supposed to be picking out, although I can get a bit of creaminess/custardy flavour.

If I had to choose, I think I’d go with Blueberry Zabaglione over this tea; I do like both strawberries and blueberries, but the base tea is nicer in BZ (less astringent), and the blueberry flavour is more potent and tasty, whereas the strawberry is a bit more drowned out by the base tea here. I also think that the blueberry flavour is much more authentic than the strawberry (though I like the fake flavours of both these fruits :D)

ETA: Second infusion (3.5 min) pretty light in flavour. Not a tea I will miss.
