Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish Black Tea

Black Tea by 52teas

Wow are you guys in for a treat this week!

Here’s our premium Indian black teas (a little extra Assam in this blend since I envisioned it as a breakfast tea) blended with GREAT BIG, whole freeze-dried blueberries and natural flavors. I have a feeling this is going to be a VERY popular blend. Enjoy!

I really like blueberry teas, and I really like Assam, so that’s where this one stands. I seem to have a relationship with the teas from Zoomdweebies/52 Teas where I either REALLY get it or I don’t. This is one of those where I don’t really get that cream cheese Danish blah blah blah but the blueberry is nice enough.

Finally trying this one (ok tried this morning) and it is so good. Again I got a lot of comments on the smell of blueberries in my office. :) The yummy blueberry taste and kick of black tea was just what I was looking for to get me moving this morning! Best part is that the smell is still hanging around this afternoon even if the tea is long gone. Thank you RachanaC (A.K.A. Rachel) for rescuing this one!!

Another sample from Rachel!! Yet another one of Frank’s blends that I missed the first time around.

It tastes just like the blueberry filling that’s in danishes. The cream cheese flavor is really prominent when I add milk…and I found that I actually prefer this one with milk! It’s decadent and full-bodied, definitely a special morning treat. This is another one that should be made permanent so that I don’t have to be without it…especially since the entire pot is now in my belly.

Oh, and Frank…any chance a peanut butter fudge tea could be in the works? Maybe with a honeybush base?

Courtney

Thanks jessiwrites for sending some of this my way :)

I love getting the opportunity to try any 52Teas blends since I’m just not ready to try these in full sizes, especially since they’re such limited time teas.

This tea had a lovely blueberry and vanilla scent dry. Once steeped it smelled much more like blueberries than vanilla. The taste was also much more blueberries then anything else, perhaps slightly creamy. I’m not so sure if the black base lends itself to this tea so well. It seems almost too strong and overpowers everything except the blueberry flavour? I could be wrong though. Either way this was an enjoyable cup, but I don’t think I need to order it myself.

So I’ve been a bit worried about trying this. I was so excited to try this I could hardly stand it, but after hearing about all about the “chemical taste” “cheap wine taste” “off-taste” etc comments from Steepsterites the past couple weeks, I almost dreaded my order arriving, and finding out if I was one of the unlucky ones too.

The smell is promising so far. It’s overwhelmingly of blueberry, and doesn’t seem to be anything weird. I like my teas fairly strong, so if I’m given a steeping window, I always try it on the strongest first. The website suggested 4-5 minutes, so I went with 5. The liquor is … VERY dark. Haha. Like BLACK. This black tea earned its name, hehe.

Sipping it now, I get a strong blueberry flavor, and a thick sweetness, which I imagine is emulating the ‘cream cheese danish’ part. I’m wishing I tried this before I ate that lasagna though, because I’m not sure if that tang yet is authentically like cream cheese, or if it’s that chemical taste I’ve been hearing about since the tomato sauce is throwing me off.

I’m thinking this one would do better with a four minute steep instead of a five. It has that funny taste that you get when you steep a strong black for too long, almost like you’ve just cooked it a bit.

I tried a second infusion, and either this one does NOT re-steep well at all, or it’s because I killed it with a five minute infusion the first time around.

All in all, it’s promising. Now when I smell the dry leaf after having a cup, I smell the the cream cheesy sweetness in addition to the blueberries. Grabbed some fresh leaf and going try out a four minute infusion this time around, still with boiling water.
--

Now that my mouth is rinsed of the lasagne, I’m trying the second cup of this, this time at four minutes judging by what I could discern from the first. Now I can definitely tell that losing that minute has caused less of the actual flavor to come through, but the black tea itself has improved now that it hasn’t been oversteeped. Perhaps five minutes and under boiling will be the magic touch? I want to avoid the using extra leaf route if possible, because extra leaf means less cups, which means this face: :(

Anyway, musings about the perfect parameters aside, this is some serious yum in a cup. The blueberries taste JUICY, and there’s that thick, tangy sweet cream cheese flavor which practically makes my eyes roll back into my head.

I’m going to say something extremely selfish, so you may want to avert your eyes from the following sentence: Why did I not order all seven pouches that were available at the time of ordering!?

This is good. Really good. I’m putting myself on that waiting list on the website. :)

Having a nice biscuity, raisiny assam base with some body this tea does make a nice breakfast tea as intended. The flavouring is nice with the fruit tasting like cooked berry, paired with the naturally biscuity flavour of the tea it certainly does evoke the taste of some blueberry baked good. To me though the tang in the flavouring evokes the memory of my mothers pancake batter made with yogurt, instead of a cream cheese danish, however this is a good memory. Regardless the tea is delicious. The tea interacts with the blueberries to create a slightly smokey, slightly chocolate undertone beneath the fruit and pastry. I don’t really get any notes of frosting, either the sweetness or the vanilla accents that are often in it, but I suppose if you added sugar you might get these notes, however this is not necessary. The tea is very nice as it is and resteeps well with decent fruit flavour for the first two and a nice tea flavour for the third.

A huge thank you to iHeartTeas for rescuing this gem!

I didn’t even have to open the pouch, just snip the end off, to smell the symphony of glory. The dry leaf smells so much like my grandma’s homemade jam, except I’d say that the tea is a little on the sweeter side (since my grandma puts as little sugar as possible in her jams!) and I also detect another fruity note in the background, like marmalade or something. I already like where this is going.

This is hands down the best blueberry tea I’ve ever tasted. It’s seriously like drinking fresh blueberry jam. No cream cheese, but it still reminds me of a pastry. Full of win, this tea is.

At last, my beloved has come back to me. Thanks times a billion for reblending this, Frank!

Oh, does the fresh leaf ever smell tantalizing. You smell blueberries AND creaminess AND flaky crust.

What I’ve always loved about this tea is that you can resteep it and it still has a ton of flavour. I find that many flavoured blacks don’t fare well in this way. And the flaky pastry is even more palpable the second steep around.

So excited that I’m upping the rating to my first 100 EVAR!

This just may be the saddest sip down in the history of ever. I decided to treat myself to the last of it today because it’s V-Day (although I ultimately don’t care about it anyway), I’m sick, and frustratingly writing a paper on Tagalog phonology for days now, and can’t seem to say everything I want to say within the maximum page limit. Blah.

Wouldn’t it just be fabulous if this were reblended? I’d go ahead and get a pound already but that just may be too much. Perhaps there will be enough people on the Island who will be interested in splitting it. :)

Tasty alert! Also, extinction alert! I’m down to one more teaspoon after this cup. Oh, the horror.

If Frank reblended this and Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha, I’d be one incredibly happy woman.

Whoa, I steeped this for three minutes this time around (as opposed to the usual four with this tea) and I can actually taste the phyllo now! Before, I was only getting blueberry jam, which was awesome on its own, but now, the flavours are more 3D. I would seriously rather have a cup of this than an actual blueberry Danish.

Another sip. Yeah, it’s without a doubt a golden crisp phyllo. Frank, that’s amazing.

Thanks JackieT for sending me this sample. I drank the whole sample tonight in 3 separate steeps. I like it best at 90 C for 3.5 minutes. I also like more rather than less leaf.
This is a great blueberry black tea, sadly though I was expecting some of the cream cheese danish part of the name to shine through. I’m not getting it, I played with steep times and temp and I get blueberry, but not the rest. :((

Alright third times a charm, my third time trying to write this note today.

I received this from Courtney

So it’s blueberry (ish- definitely not Northern Ontario Blueberry.) I’m not getting any cream cheese or Danish flavours. I dunno I was so excited to try this & it’s just meh.
I do have more on it’s way from someone else, maybe it was just this sample, a lil cross contamination perhaps.

This is definately my favorite of Frank’s teas that I have tried so far. Yummy blueberry flavors mixed with cheesecake (I have never tried a cream cheese danish). Tastes great alone, but the flavors are enhanced by a little milk and sugar

So, I’m undecided on this tea. After having (and loving) Blueberry Jam from DavidsTea, I was expecting a big burst of blueberry flavor from this one, but that’s not quite what I’m getting. Maybe I steeped it too long, but the only flavors I can taste are black tea and a little something that’s vaguely tangy (that would be the “cream cheese,” I’d assume). It smells like blueberry, but I’m just not tasting it.

I didn’t notice any blueberries in my leaves though, so I think I’ll try digging a little deeper into the packet to see if I can unearth any before my next cup.

ETA: Hmm… On my second cup now (steeped 2min, had a blueberry in the leaves, added a piece of rock sugar), and while it’s better, I’m still not totally wowed. Going to walk away from this one for now and try again next week to see if I can get a different result.

Okay, this one is growing on me. Still nothing outstanding, but with almond milk and rock sugar, it is tasty. Bumping up my rating a wee bit.

sigh… I really, really wanted to LOVE this one. But try as I might, I’m just not getting the awesomeness that so many of you seem to be enjoying.

After playing with the parameters a bit, I can now say that I like it much more than I did on my first brew, but it still isn’t outstanding. I need to add milk to get any sort of ‘baked good’ flavor, but when I do, I lose the blueberry almost entirely.

With milk, I get a nice bakery-flavor tea with a very, very subtle hint/suggestion of berry occasionally wafting through the swallow. And I’m not sure if it’s my imagination, but I think I can actually detect a little sour cream cheese taste to it – and that part is awesome.

I think that after many cups, I’m finally ready to rate this one. However, I have to take points off because it really needs milk for me to enjoy it.

Thanks for the sample Yssah! This is a solid blueberry flavored black tea. I don’t really get the “danish” aspect but it is tasty nonetheless! :)

This one is really really good. A great balance of blueberry and cream cheese flavoring. The tea is full bodied and slightly malty. Usual sugar and cream with my dessert teas and its heavenly.

So, a while back, I was taking stock of my tea purchasing patterns and had noticed that they had somehow devolved to the point where they could easily be summarized as “just send all my tea money to 52teas,” which, while certainly a sound tea buying strategy that will yield a lot of nifty, delicious tea, meant that I found myself without some of my staples (NEED MOAR EARL GREY). So I consciously tried not to be tempted whenever the weekly notification of a new blend came up. BUT! When I saw that Frank had reblended this AND the coconut cheesecake honeybush, I knew there was no way I could resist. Grabbed both, and a few days later here we are, which is interesting because usually my 52teas orders take a while to arrive (ll have to try this with a bit more leaf next time to see if that strengthens the other tastes.

Edit: Had to go shopping and come back to realize this, but my room now smells like blueberries :D

I got this in my swap with moraiwe. I’d been curious about this tea for some time – more because I couldn’t quite imagine what it might taste like than because I thought I’d love it, so it was awesome to be able to try it without having to shell out for two ounces.

This tea smells very fruity – in an artificial way that’s not entirely pleasant – both dry and steeped. However, it doesn’t taste like much. It’s slightly bitter, and I’m getting hardly anything in the way of blueberry, cream cheese, or danish. More than anything, I’m reminded of slightly oversteeped Lipton – the base is thoroughly standard and unimpressive. I can see how it might work reasonably well as a base for a blend with other strong flavors, but said strong flavors are sadly absent in this cup. There is a (faintly chemical-tasting) aftertaste that I can almost convince myself might be cream cheese. Almost.

I brewed it for five minutes, which may have been too long (although the instructions do say to steep for 4-5 minutes, so I feel justified in giving a rating based on this steep). I’ll try this one again with a shorter steep time, but I highly doubt it will become a favorite.

I’m a sucker for blueberries, so thank you SO much SimplyJenW for sending me this one! I had to dive in as soon as I saw it. Dry there are definitely blueberry notes, which raised my hopes even more.

Once brewed the leaves are less blueberry scented, but definitely not a bad scent. The tea itself doesn’t seem as solid a quality as some of the ones I’ve been drinking lately, but in a flavoured blend that doesn’t usually bug me so much.

My first sip I got blueberry top notes with a black base. Smiling now, I sipped some more. The black tea dominated but there were definitely blueberry notes there, ones that tasted like blueberry pie filling. Yum!

Once the cup started to cool, I got a cream flavour added, and the blueberry became more dominating. I think I like this one better just a tad cooler! I’m curious now what I’ll get if I add milk and sugar, and if I brew at a lower temp!

I wasn’t as in love with this one this time around, but that could be because I’ve been drinking blacks all day. It does have a strong blueberry flavour to it, and I could see myself having this one again if it was offered at a friend’s house. Still definitely very grateful for having the chance to try it!

Yum, this tea smells like blueberry pie filling, and all those huge blueberries that are mixed in with the tea are a great touch. It’s a very fruity, blueberry-ish tasting tea as well; the cream cheese is a bit hard to find but I’m tasting in in the back of my mouth particularly after the tea has had time to cool off a little bit. I bet adding milk would bring it out more, so I’ll have to try it that way next time. But I’m really liking this tea even as is, I’m glad I was able to finally get my hands on it thanks to Rachel.

Adding milk does bring out more of the tangy flavour of the cream cheeese than when I was just drinking the tea plain. Interestingly I’m also picking up a flavour reminiscent of baked pastries and I’m impressed that Frank managed to incorporate something like that in his tea. Blueberry might still be the dominant flavour of this tea but it isn’t just blueberry, there’s much more to it than that.

Yep, this is a really good one. Too bad it is limited. Can we beg Frank to add it to the permanent collection?

This one steeps up lightly pink from the blueberry…but maybe that was just my red cup. Lovely creamy and blueberry flavor. I do have to admit this is my first blueberry flavored black tea, and it works.

Mmmm… blueberries. This tea smells delicious. And it tastes great. I’ve made Danish with this flavour. Now I crave pastries.

Thanks to Yssah for this tea.

The first thing I noticed when I opened this package was the HUGE blueberries! I could smell blueberries as soon as I opened the package, along with a pastry type scent. It tastes really good, more sweet than tart, a bit like blueberry jam. Then the cream cheese bit is more prominent than I expected from reading the other notes but it was a little tangy and quite creamy and sweet.

I have been rationing this out recently as I don’t have much left, but I’ve had a bad day so I needed something comforting to pick me up a bit. This was definitely the right choice, even if I did oversteep a little.

I iced my second steep of yesterdays leaves to drink today. The cream cheese element is gone in this, but I get a ton of fresh bluberry flavour! This is nice iced but I prefer it hot.

I had another large pot of this today while watching Roman Holiday – bliss!

I really adore this. I was having a cup today and it struck me how unique this tea is. I have tried plenty of blueberry teas, but this really is just gorgeous. The cream cheese aspect adds just the right touch and I get such a creamy, sweet, smooth cup. Definitely bumping this one right up!
