Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha

Green Tea by 52teas

Had some extra genmaicha (and a little bit of uji (matcha mixed with-) genmaicha that we blended together to create this awesome blend. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough of anything to make it a tea of the week, so here’s a bonus blend (VERY LIMITED EDITION) for this week.

We’ve blended genmaicha (Japanese sencha (I got it before the earthquake, so no worries) blended with toasted rice) with mini marshmallows and natural flavors. This blend is going to go FAST, and we won’t be able to blend any more for a while, if we ever do, so DO NOT drag your feet about this one.

Shared a pot of this with a friend tonight! I love how the toasted rice blends so well with the marshmallow. I will be EXTREMELY sad when this one is gone..

Sneaking on here to post that I’m sneaking this in between testing. Detailed note and rating later…but this is really really nice. I haven’t had many genmaichas but so far this really is nice and tasty.

Sipdown and that was a giant cup of no thank you. I tried airing i out but it didn’t help.

Figured I’d kick this into my travel mug this morning since I’ve got the smores genmaicha on the way. I’m not as in love with this as everyone else it seems but overall, it’s not a bad little genmaicha.

Yay! A genmaicha! I love genmaicha! I really enjoyed this tea. I don’t have any other genmaicha (except, I think I have a swap from TastyBrew) so this will hold down the fort for now. The dry leaf did have an odd chemical smell, but it was gone once steeped. It tasted mostly of genmaicha, with marshmallow more in the aftertaste. Yum! Happy sweet genmaicha!

Enjoyed this tea without any additions this afternoon. Not even a little sugar! And I could still taste the marshmallow sweetness! I think it’s growing on me!

I am so happy that I managed to snag a bag of this on Frank’s first reblend this go round. It is the best of the three genmaicha’s people seem to be comparing (I have Smores and Browncoat as well). It tastes exactly like a sweet marshmallow square :) Yum.

52teas 12 Days of Christmas Sampler 2011 – Day 6

YESSS!!!!!! I’m super excited that I get to try this one! It went out of stock before I even discovered 52teas. Just looking at the picture makes my mouth water.

The dominant flavor is buttery sencha. I’m not getting a genmaicha flavor. The toasted rice would have to be a lot stronger, and for that there would have to be a lot more rice.

The sencha does give a sweet, sugary, buttery, baked confection taste. If I try really hard, I can connect the taste to marshmallow Rice Krispie treats. But I’m not sure how much of that is actually in the tea versus what I want to be in the tea.

Regardless, it’s definitely yummy!! A sweet green tea to calm my nerves after a stressful work day. This is so good, I even forgot what bitter tastes like. It’s nowhere to be found here. The more I sip this, the more I love it! I just might have to buy a pouch of this too. :)

I was so excited to try this – and it’s pure genius! Toasty, marshmallowy and sweet, this tea does remind me of a rice krispie treat! I did add Splenda which enhances the sweetness, of course. My first cup doesn’t have any marshmallows in it – they are further down the bag – but I can still taste a hint of it. Absolutely delicious, as per usual, Frank! :)

So I ordered this along with a few others the when they were re-blended; I also don’t know why I put my tea spending on hold, since I never listen to myself.

Ok, I don’t know if the new vegan flavors Frank is to blame, but lately it seems a lot of his new tea’s have this weird sanitized alcohol liquor smell. All though people have mentioned that when a blend is re-made quickly they get that smell due to not being aired out long enough or settling first. It does smell gooey sweet though, like cake flavored vodka.

The overall taste though was good! Very buttery. Maybe unami quality to it, but more sweet.

Feeling lazy so not going to go into much detail (I think there are enough tasting notes though.) I am going to compare this one to the smores one and see how that goes.

Specifics

Pot: Porcelain
Leaf: 1.5 tsp
Water 8oz
Steeps: 2 combined (16oz cup)
Sweetner: 2 spoonfuls of light agave.

Thanks jessiwrites for sending me this one :)

This does taste just like genmaicha and marshmallows. It smells much sweeter than it tastes – thank goodness. The tea is bang on for the description, but I’m not sure that it’s for me. I’m only on my first steep so I’ll update as I steep some more.

Well I’m not sure if something went wrong with the resteep but the second steep tasted just like genmaicha. I love genmaicha but there was absolutely no hint of marshmallows.

Mmmmm, this is quite fantastic.

Finally, I got my parcel from 52teas in the mail yesterday. It was a good mail day for me. This is the only one of the three teas in the package that I was able to try yesterday, and it was so delicious. I had three infusions, and I think the second one was the best. But all three were absolutely wonderful. I am already sad that I can’t reorder this tea whenever I want it.

After letting this air out in a bowl in my closet, I am finding the taste (and smell!) to be much… gentler? It’s very nice, anyway.

In fact, I ordered more.

I definitely prefer this to the S’mores Genmaicha, and I really like drinking it in the evening. The marshmallow-y sweetness is so nice with the toasty genmaicha, it’s a lovely winding-down kind of treat.

Yum, this is so what I needed tonight.

I’ve been looking forward to drinking genmaicha all day. I like it best as an evening tea, it’s so warm and cozy and relaxing. I debated just having regular genmaicha, but I have very little of it left, and… I quite enjoy this blend. So it won.

I dumped my leaves into a jar to cold-brew them, as I only had time for two infusions and it seems a shame to waste them. I’m curious about how that will turn out.

Good night. I need to sleep off this sore throat.

Backlogging.

This was a sample provided to me from Rachel!

I was so excited to try this tea, especially with all the rave reviews! I opened the bag and smelled genmaicha with a hint of the marshmallow root. Brewed up it’s very much genmaicha with sweet marshmallow root added to it. It’s good, it’s unique, it resembles a marshmallow treat, but I’m not finding it nearly as good as most others have. I’d just rather have a gemaicha tea and eat a rice krispies treat. Thank Rachel for sending me some of this and allowing me to try it!

Ugg, I’m drinking lots of tea today to make up for lost tea times over the week and totally paying for it with many bathroom trips! However, I need to massively damage my “haven’t tried” pile as the tin barely closes! Figure I should drink this one, MTG, first as it is taking the most room!

DRY: sweet, malty and toasty smell. Lots on interesting bits in this tea: brown rice, big popcorn and weird white chunky bits (marshmallow root?). Theres a weird smell that reminds me of Sun Cloud Mist whatever it’s called also from 52 teas.. must be that root.

STEEPED: Toasty rice smell coming from a light green tea.

TASTE: Slightly sweet and malty taste that is like marshmallow. Then, theres a bite of grassy green tea mixed with toasty rice (classic genmaicha taste).

Sweetened, well.. it tastes sweeter lol! It does taste closer to rice crispies squares here, especially in aftertaste! I think I like MTG unsweetened to enjoy the genmaicha but the sweetener did move it closer to the treats.

COMMENTS: Very tasty! I quite enjoyed how this tea came out! Unique flavoring with the marshmallow sweetness!
However, it doesn’t taste like my rice crispy treats since I add vanilla to mine (Shhhhh!!! My secret ingredient!) – but I’ll fix that in a future cup as I have some vanilla beans leftovers hanging around.

I’m enjoying this tea while snacking on salted okra chips! MMmmm! I’m enjoying the marshmallowy ricey tea with the salted sticky tooth’d okra! All this while watching more korean dramas, this time Flower Boy Next Door!

Nooo, my tealogs today are making sound like a preggers lady! I’m not! Just slightly crazy today from lack of tea.

When I saw this had been reblended, I just had to order some. I LOVE genmaicha and it has been WAY too long since I’ve had any in my cupboard. The first infusion was fairly smooth and just really toasty plain, I added a pinch of sugar and the marshmallow emerged beautifully. On the second infusion now and it seems more balanced than the first. I’m really enjoying this one!

Ringing in the New Year while at the same time de-cupboarding this delicious tea. I really may need to invest in a pound of this – it is just that awesome. Here is to a great 2013 Steepsterites!

The dry notes are very sweet smelling, it smells almost like freshly made rice krispie squares. The steeped notes are that of puffed wheat, just like i got with another flavoured genmaicha.

It’s earthy, toasty and sweet. Almost vanilla like. I don’t find it tastes like a rice krispie square, but it sure is delicious.

sip down 8 I think
when I grabbed the bag I was leary, I thought that I didnt like this the first time & then I sipped it & it was so much yummier than I remember. I checked this note & rating and realized I did really like this, but I still think it’s yummier than before. I want more.
I let it cool too much & it got really bitter

Thanks to Azzrian for a sample of this.

Genmaicha can be hit or miss for me. Most of the time it’s a miss. I’m not sure what it is exactly. Maybe it’s the fact it’s not very tea like? Or just the overpowering flavor of the toasted rice? Hard to describe. But everyone always raves about it, so maybe I’m missing something. Anyway, when I saw this, I wanted to try and sample. I’ve never had genmaicha flavored with anything before, and the marshmallows mixed in intrigued me.

The tea smells really good. It really does match the smell of a marshmallow rice krispie squares. And brewed up, it’s not too bad. I was worried with toasted rice would be overpowering, but it’s really not.

I wonder if they plan to bring this around again. It is very unique..

This tea is delish, but I’m not getting enough marshmallow for me.
If I could find a source for mini marshmallows (the real mini kind) and add them in myself, I totally would. The marshmallow root isn’t really doing it for me :(

I’m not getting a lot of genmaicha flavour either though. I’m more getting a texture, a sort of thick but creamy texture that is a bit sweet.

I’m still thankful this one was in the sampler though :)

Finally got to try this, thanks to a sample from Sil! Marshmallow cereal bars are one of my favourite things, so I’ve been interested in trying this for a while. The dry leaves smell just as I expected; sweet, faintly of marshmallow, maybe slightly nutty. It’s put me in mind of a Rice Krispie Squares bar already!

Brewed, this is no disappointment. I haven’t had a genmaicha in a while, so I’ll be interested to compare this to some of the others in my stash. Maybe at the weekend. For now, though, this tastes pretty much as I expected. Initially, it tastes almost exactly like every other genmaicha I remember. In other words, a little bit like sugar puffs. The marshmallow taste is subtle, but it does come out pretty well in the aftertaste. Sweet, squidgy — it is remarkably like the real thing, only with a much stronger nutty-tasting start.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to try this, as I’d have always wondered about it otherwise. It’s not quite as marshmallowy as I hoped, at least when it’s hot, but it’s not bad. Cold, though, as I discovered by accident, the marshmallow taste is much more prominent. Something to remember for next time! Thanks again to Sil for sharing this with me!

Alright. So I opened the bag of this one is POW! Lots of sweet marshmallowy smells came jumping out at me. I thought this would mean it was going to be super marshmallow tasting (oh no!), but once I scooped out a tsp and put it in the pot, the smell was much more balanced. I guess all together it was just too much!

The smell of this one dry is more marshmallow than anything else. There are the roasty/toasty genmaicha notes that I love so much, but it is mostly marshmallow. The scent DOES remind me a Marshmallow Treats, which is awesome. I used to love those when I was a kid.
Once brewed, the marshmallow calms down further, and the toasty notes of the genmaicha stand out a bit more. Yay! It still reminds me of treats, but now there is a little more depth to the smell. It’s both sweet AND toasty. The toasted rice smells awesome.

Taste-wise, I’m picking up subtle/mild marshmallow notes, and these are especially notable at the back of the sip. I’m picking up the toasty, earthy genmaicha the most – not a bad thing. The marshmallow root does add a sweetness to the genmaicha that is completely different and interesting. The marshmallow treat taste is there, it’s just not as heavy as it was in the smell – again, I don’t think this is a bad thing. Yes, I quite like it. The mouthfeel is very “fluffy”. It’s got a lot working for it. It’s not overly sweet, it allows the genmaicha to shine, and it brings back childhood memories. =)

Overall, I’d say this one is a win.

NOTE: Once it cools down a bit, the marshmallow becomes more detectable. I like it best after it sits for a few minutes.

I’m afraid that I don’t love this. :(

It seemed like such a sure thing because I love genmaicha and I love marshmallows. (Plus I was hoping I would love this as much as the famous Malted Genmaicha!)

But I don’t taste yummy fluffy sugary marshmallows—I taste fruity pop rocks! Tossed in with some astringent green tea and toasty rice. I like the toasty rice—but the fruitiness is a bit overwhelming. I know that vanilla can sometimes manifest as “fruity” in perfumes—I’m wondering if it’s the same with flavors?

But anyways, I’m sad to say that this is not a fave. At least it is not what I hoped.

Next time, I’ll try brewing this with less leaf and see what I get.

I missed this one the first time around. So I was thrilled to find it in my 12 Teas of Christmas box today! It smelled just like marshmallow treats….so much so that my husband thought I made some. :) I don’t know how Frank does it, but I’m glad he does. This one was spot on marshmallow treat for me. All the flavors were there and it was a total win! I need more…I mean I would like more please! :)

This blend is genius. Seriously. My husband saw me with a bag of tea with actual marshmallows in it and said “So have you officially given up on drinking real tea?” I had to explain that the marshmallows scared me at first too- but that this was genmaicha, and that the toastiness of the genmaicha (it has toasted rice in it) works remarkably well with the marshmallow. As I explained, he considered the notion and agreed that he could see how it might, just maybe work.

I love this one. It’s an utterly surprising blend- the sweet and the nutty/toasty genmaicha go really well together. The sweetness of the melted marshmallows really is very mild- I don’t sweeten my teas and it’s acceptable for me :) This is truly, truly creative. Bravo!
