Cinnamon Roll Honeybush

Honeybush Tea by 52teas

Yeah, we went there. And I’m going to warn you guys now, I DO not have all of the ingredients I need to reblend this one right now–though I imagine I will be ordering them soon–so don’t drag your feet or you’re going to miss out on something incredible.

We took our caffeine-free African honeybush and blended it with organic cinnamon chips and natural flavors (including the essences of butter, brown sugar and cream cheese frosting to name a few). This is the real deal: You’ll swear someone just baked a batch of ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls.

Well, it’s a good thing I picked up two packages….because once again I LOVE yet another tea from Frank! Not only do the dry leaves smell like cinnamon rolls, but so does the tea after steeping. But it doesn’t stop there oh no it TASTES like a cinnamon roll too. There is a perfect mix of cinnamon and honeybush that simply melts in your mouth and dances on your tongue! I may be obsessed with this tea. I am going to have to go easy on drinking this because I can easily see me drinking both pouches in less than a week! I know I really want this to last.

52teas 12 Days of Christmas Sampler 2011 – Day 11

Yay! Cinnamon Roll Honeybush! I mean, I’m not excited about the Honeybush part. But I LOVE cinnamon rolls!!!

And this tea pretty much just tastes exactly like cinnamon. I get a hint of cloyingly sweet Honeybush, but mostly I just taste delicious cinnamon. This is probably the best Honeybush tea I’ve ever had. I’m not getting anything resembling a hot buttery roll, but it’s still good.

I have to give this a lower rating because it is Honeybush, and pure cinnamon tea isn’t all that special. That being said, it’s not an overabundance of cinnamon. It’s executed well.

The bottom line: I usually absolutely detest Honeybush, so that should be a huge tip off how great this tea is. Buy this up, people!

Momo sent me a sample of this one a while back. thank you! It’s one of two I haven’t tried yet! For this one, I couldn’t do my usual 52 Teas quick steep taste test, since I knew that to get the most flavor out of the cinnamon it would have to be boiling. So I just steeped it for six minutes. This may have sat mingling with other teas too long, since I mostly just taste cinnamon. I feel like I’m not doing it justice, since it isn’t as fresh now!

Used 1.75 tablespoons for ~375ml of water.

This brewed tisane has a strong authentic cinnamon aroma. I am also getting scents of sweet icing and a distinct ‘baked good’ smell.

On the sip, the cinnamon flavour tastes a lot like cinnamon heart candies; very sweet with an artificial edge to it. The aftertaste is slightly smoky and reminds me of the scent of a blown out candle. I’m not detecting a strong baked goods taste in the sip of this tisane but it is present closer to the end of the sip, trailing into the aftertaste. I’m tasting a bit of the icing flavour but it isn’t as strong as it was in the scent.

As the tea cools, I’m getting more of the baked good flavour and the icing taste is coming out more as well. Baked cinnamon roll flavour is very strong on the aftertaste during exhale- it would have been nice to have this in the sip of this tisane.

This tisane may benefit from a longer infusion time of 8 or more minutes.

Many thanks to Kittenna for sharing this with me!

Here’s another one I would have been shocked had it not been in here. (Actually, as this is the second to last, and I understand the last is a new one, there is at least one other that I’m a bit surprised wasn’t included.) I count it a bit like the pancake one. I like them, but I expect I’ll probably prefer them in solid form.

To my surprise, I found the leaves in dry form smelled a lot like mulled wine. I think it must be some of the spices in this stuff that does it, probably also the nature of the honeybush, but I was not expecting it to be so mulled wine-y. (Here’s a Christmas blend idea for next year. Mulled wine, maybe with orange also. And it should probably be on a (are you sitting down? Better sit down for this) honeybush base, I think.)

After steeping, it’s less mulled wine and much more cinnamon-y and baked goods-y. I really like the smell of this. It seems very close to the real deal, to the point where I can even imagine approximately how moist the roll in question would be.

The flavour is very close as well to a real cinnamon roll, but the honeybush adds a little extra tangy note to it which seems to stick out a bit. I wasn’t expecting that note at all, and it feels a bit like it’s trying to detach itself from the rest of the flavour and run the other way. Once I get a little more used to it being there, it doesn’t seem to be as glaring, as if that slightly tangy note gives up the escape attempt and falls neatly in line with the others.

I remember some others mentioned even being able to find notes of icing in this, but I haven’t managed that. The closest I get is the idea of icing, but then that’s fine with me.

Basically I’m enjoying this one a LOT more than I thought I would. And it’s not even a tea base. I’m shocked at myself, Steepsterites. Shocked!

First of all – Frank, I love your teas, I truely do, but you have to find a better method for sealing the bottoms of your sample pouches. Today makes the second time I’ve taken a pouch out of the 12 Days of X-mas sampler only for most of it to fall out the unsealed bottom and make a huge mess on my floor. I also have a few that spilled their guts inside the box including the new mystery tea (which is no longer a mystery – sorry) and mixed together a little bit.

But enough of my whining, I really did enjoy this tea. The cinnamon tastes a bit more like those camdy cinnamon hearts than cinnamon rolls – sharp and hot vs warm and mellow. There’s a nice baked flavour that comes pretty close to the taste of pastery dough and the honeybush’s natural sweetness makes it seem like a dessert in a cup.

Time to de-cupboard this tea. I found that adding some honey or agave nectar really brings out the pastry flavours as well as the cinnamon. I’m glad this one was added to the permanent collection as I’d love to buy this again some time in the future.

If only I had something sweet to nibble on right now (sigh). This cinnamon roll honeybush will have to do. Cinnamon is a favourite of mine but at the same time I have to be in the right frame of mind for it. This has been un-opened on my shelf for a couple of months now so it’s about time I tried it.

The tea is a mixture of light browny/reddish finely chopped pieces that smells like cinnamon bark (earthy and spicy).
Colour is browny red.
Smell once brewed is pure delicious cinnamon with a slightly sweet and toasty combination.

The taste is interesting, it’s not as strong as the smell but contains the same characteristics. A combination of sugar, cinnamon, honeybush and something that I just cannot put my finger on. Almost raisiny/curranty in taste. It’s a nice enough cocktail of flavours but I believe a touch of sugar would bring out the bun part.
For now I am happy enough with this warming cinnamon liquid. Yummy on cold, dark nights like tonight.

I’ve been slacking on trying new teas some lately, mostly just enjoying the bounty of my earlier TeaSpring order. But I decided to get back into it with one of the last remaining samples I have from Ninavampi.

Uhm, I may have picked the wrong tea to try to kickstart my sampling. For once, though, it isn’t the honeybush that’s killing this for me. Actually, the honeybush is adding a nice bakey back note to this that really does make it taste like freshly baked gooey sweet rolls. Nope, I get lost with the cinnamon on this one. It’s just too Red Hots cinnamon. It’s a lot like drinking Hot Damn cinnamon schnapps but without the punch of alcohol. I supposed I’m used to a milder cinnamon flavor than what this is.

Oh well, good to try! And also good to know that sometimes honeybush does work for me (even if the rest of the tea didn’t).

This is a very warm and cozy cinnamon honeybush. I think if it wasn’t called ‘Cinnamon Roll’ with the promise of some kind of delightful baked-good flavor, I would have really enjoyed it.

As it is, I’m drinking it and wishing I could taste more than just woodsy cinnamon. It’s yummy, especially the second steep, but I definitely don’t taste anything ‘roll’-y about it.

Thanks for sending it my way, Stephanie! I am so glad I got to try more honeybush blends. :D

Dry leaves smelled like cinnamon raisin to me. The brewed tea definitely smells like cinnamon and brown sugar. Yum. I think I’m getting a bit of frosting in the smell too.

When I drink it, the honeybush base seems to be battling with the cinnamon roll flavor for dominance. I’m hoping the cinnamon roll will win, but they seem kinda evenly matched right now.

I added a bit of sugar to my second cup since it seemed like it should be tastier. I was wrong. I simply don’t like sweetener in my tea unless it’s chai or earl grey or some other black tea.

Awesome! I love this. It is sweet, creamy and dreamy! The cinnamon is just right – it is spicy enough to provide that tickle the taste buds but it isn’t spicy-hot. Together with the flavor of brown sugar and butter it tastes just like the filling of a cinnamon roll.

Another amazing blend from Frank!

Backlog:

Well it’s time for the eleventh tea of Christmas, and this is that tea! Another excellent choice from Frank, and I really enjoyed this last evening as I wrote this article: http://sororiteasisters.com/2011/12/24/on-the-eleventh-day-of-christmas-52teas-sent-to-me/

I have a bit of a problem with this tea.

I can’t stop drinking it. I’ve had it for 3 days and I’ve drank 1/3 of the pouch. I’m going to have to start rationing this at the same time I start a campaign to get it added to the permeant collection. It’s good hot. It’s good cold. It’s magic.

After I bought Cinnamon Roll Honeybush I became nervous. I dislike most cinnamon teas. What had I done! The allure of cinnamon rolls drew me in and seduced me but no tea could really taste like cinnamon rolls.

I was wrong. Wrong Wrong Wrong. I’m still a little mystified at how Frank does it but all the notes of a warm gooey cinnamon roll are there. Sweet cream cheese frosting? Check. Comforting squishy dough? Check. Spicy Cinnamon? Check.

Excuse me while I go drink the liter of goodness that I just brewed.

Eeeeee! I got so many awesome teas in the mail today from jessiwrites! http://instagram.com/p/YJMDSOOZAf/

This is my first official honeybush tea! Well, not counting Lemon Chiffon which is rooibos and honeybush. It smells quite cinnamon-y and spicy. I’m intrigued. I have a love/hate relationship with 52Teas blends – not because they aren’t good. The ones I’ve tried have been delicious. But I almost don’t want to try them and love them and then not be able to get them.

Just from the name I was expecting a tea that may have been too sweet for my liking but I’m pleasantly surprised here. This tea is not at all sweet, the cinnamon is there but I’m not getting too much of a baked “roll” type taste. There’s another foreign, but not bad, taste in there I’m guessing is the honeybush. Another pleasant surprise since I really wasn’t sure what to expect, I was just hoping it didn’t have the same medicinal taste as rooibos.

I’m happy I got to try this tea out :)

First of all, thanks to Jenn for sending me a sample of this. I was very skeptical that i would like honeybush because I am really not a fan of red rooibois, to me it has such a medicinal aftertaste…

But the honeybush is sweet and lovely! I am a huge fan of cinnamon and I am finding this to be an excellent dessert tea. It does smell sort of buttery and sugary and I am sure I will be drinking a lot of this when the temperature in san Francisco goes down and the rain starts up. Great job, Frank. Truly yummy…

I still have some of this left, but I ended up mixing it with some plain honeybush I bought in bulk at the Scarlet Sage herb company. I think it’s a bit nicer when it’s a little less strong, also I added some soymilk to it which was nice. I decided to quit alcohol at the same time my ex-BF and I broke up, I wasn’t drinking that much anyway but I figured I didn’t need anything that would be making me feel depressed… so far, so good. Drinking a lot more herbal teas and the like currently. I like my new routine even if I am something of a goody two-shoes right now. The Buddha would have approved. Nighty-night, Steepster!

Here’s my tea “nightcap” for tonight. I did notice tonight I felt the cinnamon in this blend was pretty strong so I may have oversteeped it. See my previous tasting notes. Still it’s great with soymilk as a nice treat :)

I’m so glad I got more of this, it is very tasty!

This tea is great Frank! Cinnamon can so easily overwhelm but it’s just right in this tea. And it does taste like a cinnamon roll. Its mellow and has a touch of yeasty bread flavor with a nice warmth from the cinnamon. I added a little agave nectar to bring out the sweetness of a cinnamon roll.

It’s finally snowing here today. This tea is perfect for an afternoon of reading a book under a blanket. It’s been a while since I’ve had this one and I feel like the flavors have muted a little. It’s still great, but the cinnamon was the most present flavor today; less of the bakey bread and icing flavors.

I haven’t had a cinnamon roll in ages because I overdid it during the numerous trips I made to Ikea when I was moving (yeah I know, no one forced me to get one every time). So I figured I’d try one in guilt-free tea format. I must admit that I was a little skeptical that it would end up being just another cinnamon tea (though this was my first tea from 52teas, so I didn’t know what I was in for!)

This actually tastes like a cinnamon roll! The cinnamon is not overpowering at all, and is equally balanced with the bready taste of the roll. I barely noticed the honeybush, except for the last couple of sips when it started to taste a little sour. But the rest of it was buttery cinnamon pastry goodness. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a real cinnamon roll again! (instead I’ll save my calories for cake and chocolate ;) )

Okay, this is extremely good.
I was a bit wary of the honeybush because I’ve never had it before but don’t really love rooibos that much. In this tea, the base isn’t all that apparent and what is there just adds a nice sweetness and depth.
The aroma of the dry leaf had me a little nervous. It smelled good, but more like ginger ale (sweet and gingery) than cinnamon rolls. Once I brewed it up it smelled more like one would expect a cinnamon roll tea to smell. It also had a really pretty clear liquor.
I had this sweetened and it was a very warm tea. There really are all the components of a cinnamon bun here! I didn’t expect frosting, but I got it! I also got sweet dough and cinnamon.
It’s got real warmth to it. The mister, who isn’t really big on tea but agreed to a mug of this, loved it as well. His comment was “this tastes like it’s meant to have a bit of whiskey in it”. He’s right, I actually got a somewhat boozy vibe from it too. It would likely be fantastic with a bit of alcohol, but we don’t really drink.
It tastes like sitting next to the fire in a big blanket. It’s very warm and comforting and I would repurchase this.

Went to try this one today at work, but the tea fought back! I’d just brewed a nice hot cup and was carrying it up to the information desk when the elevator jolted and made me spill! My hand got burnt and I have to admit I couldn’t drink more than about two sips afterward ‘cause it was totally all the tea’s fault. Never mine, right?

I’m beginning to think my tastebuds are off because I really didn’t like this one. The cinnamon had that fake cinnamon flavour . . . you know, that cinnamon toast crunch artificial flavour? I can’t stand that version of the spice and that was all I got from the cup beyond a faint caramelish undernote that I assume was the honeybush with something to simulate the icing. After my first experience with this one, and now this . . . I think I’ll be bidding this one adieu.

Who even needs real cinnamon rolls? Oh man. When I first smelled this tea, I was like, “I want an IKEA cinnamon roll.” (to which my boyfriend responded, “the difference between you and me is that I wake up every day wanting one.”)

This is just perfect. It’s not too spicy, it’s not too sweet. It’s just right, and it tastes like a cinnamon roll without all the eating. And in the case of IKEA cinnamon rolls, not having to go there.

I wish I could get cinnamon-addicted boyfriend to try it but I’m sure he’ll tell me it smells like fake cinnamon. Of course he also thinks anytime someone tries to get him to drink tea, they’re trying to convert him away from coffee. But I am pretty sure he’d like this…but it’s fine, I don’t have to share then!

Stephanie

Yum! Finally tried this one tonight. It’s really nice but I prefer the piña colada honeybush slightly. I DO want to try this one as a latte! I bet it’d be fab :)
