I was a little disappointed when I first tasted this honeybush, but it was entirely my own fault. I brewed it up and poured myself a cup. When I tasted it, I felt let down with the lack of flavor. I left the rest and carried on with my laundry. When I returned I added a bit more of the brewed tea to my cup to warm it back up, but since I left the tea steeping, the flavor was much more true to what it was supposed to be like. Darn me and my excited impatience! This tea smells so good I even managed to get my husband to have a few sips, which is very remarkable since he refused to try almost all of the teas I’ve made in the past.

I have a feeling this would taste even more amazing as an iced tea in summer. I don’t think my sample will last that long, so hopefully I’ll catch it for sale sometime between now and summertime. A definite repurchase.

I got so many kinds of tea for Christmas, and yet I’m still experiencing 12days of tea withdrawal. 52teas has managed to take a special place in my heart with their creative and fun blends. After trying a couple other teas this morning, I eventually caved and allowed myself to dip into my 12days leftovers. It was sad to empty this packet, but thankfully I already have a full 2oz. On it’s way to me- YAAAAAY!!!! (picture me saying this with limbs flailing like Kermit the Frog)

This honeybush blend is so wonderfully fruity with its pineapple, banana and orange combo. I love that I can actually taste each individual fruit, even with my cold.

Okay, apparently we are continuing in the bizarre section. Smoothies, for me, is not something to do with breakfast. But then again you Americans eat some odd things for breakfast sometimes. For me, a smoothie is an afternoon-y sort of snack food. But okay, I can just disregard the word ‘breakfast’ and think of it as a sort of fruity creamy flavoured tea, right? Right! Suddenly it doesn’t sound so bizarre anymore.

Haha, win! The human psyche is so easily manipulated.

GOSH! This stuff pongs! The entirety of Tea Corner currently reeks of cheap bubblegum and all I did was open the envelope to see what was inside. We’re not actually having it yet, because we just had the cotton candy one, but I opened it now so that I could be sure to see what it was for the first time that way instead of coming at it later when people had started posting about it.

Crumbs, I’m not really looking forward to this one now. O.o

It’s a honeybush base, though, which is not something I’ve had for a long time. I think the last time I had honeybush was that pina colada flavoured one that I didn’t like because of the alcoholic notes and before I discovered the ways in which rooibos can actually be made acceptable to me. By blending it with fruit. Surely honeybush should be acceptable under the same circumstances then, yes? And this time without icky alcoholic notes. That at least sounds interesting.

Yeah, a honeybush with tropical fruits. I can totally do this. I’m feeling much more positive about the prospect of drinking this one now. Maybe I’ll make it after we’ve picked up our Christmas tree.

Well, it turned out that I didn’t make it until today after all so we’re a day behind still. No matter, though. It suits me fine. I made this and served along with breakfast because although it isn’t something with caffeine in it, we normally have a black tea, it was called something with breakfast. So when else should we drink it, really.

Oh yeah and we did pick up a christmas tree by the way. The kitties are curious, but seem to like it. They have never seen a christmas tree before. None of them have tried climbing it yet, but they like sleeping under it and Luna has been beating up a couple of the lower branches. We haven’t got much in the way of ornaments, but we’ve been mass producing paper ones yesterday and for me also this morning, so it’s beginning to look like a christmas tree.

Now on to the tea. After brewing it still smells rather a lot like cheap bubblegum, but there’s a little smidge of banana emerging as well. This, I thought, does not bode well. I do like fruity flavoured teas, but there is a limit. Even for me. On top of that, most of the flavours in this stuff is what I would call tropical fruits, and I haven’t really had much in the way of luck with those in the past. I’ve had a few that were great but many that were just mediocre and generic fruit.

So with some trepidation, I sip the cup and I was surprised at how not unpleasant it was. I thought the flavour was pretty strongly banana and with some of that generic ‘tropical fruit’ underneath. Then there was a note of something sweetly spicy which I attribute to the honeybush base. I haven’t had a plain honeybush in years and years, so I don’t remember any sort of accurate flavour profile for it, but I think it was something along these lines, yes. As it cooled and developed a bit in the cup there was a strong note of citrus emerging in the flavour. Mostly orange, but also a touch of lemon.

It had a sort of thickness to it in the mouth which I think added to the smoothie aspect of the flavouring, but other than that, it struck me as merely a tropical fruit flavoured honeybush. I wouldn’t have had smoothie associations myself, had I not seen the word on the label.

So it’s not bad, but it’s not something I would go out of my way for again.

Husband reports that he too was somewhat pleasantly surprised, although he thought it had a medicinal note to it.

I have looked in the next envelope, the one for today (the 16th). I think he’ll enjoy that one!

I agree with Amanda, this definitely does have a bubble gum likeness when it’s hot. But I’m not complaining, because, I’ve been craving something a little sweet. This is certainly filling the bill.

This is really REALLY good. It reminds me just a little bit of the rainbow sherbet, not really in the flavor aspect, because it has different fruit flavors, but more in the way the fruit flavors come together in a very harmonious way. The banana and pineapple and orange are very balanced – and they are sweet with just a hint of tangy flavor toward the tail.

And yes… it tastes VERY much like a smoothie. Completely YUM!

This one’s possibly the last honeybush sample I have from Momo, thanks!

The aroma of this one is familiar, possibly from another 52teas blend, and not one that I particularly am smitten with. The flavour, however, is much tastier. I’m getting citrusy notes, and possibly pineapple, mixed with a creaminess that I can only guess is banana. I’m shocked! I was dreading drinking this cup as the aroma just wasn’t quite right, but the flavour is marvellous! The honeybush is also hardly present at all, which is nice; it just provides a solid base for the star flavours without adding too much of its own flavours.

Probably not a tea I’d purchase, but one I’d happily drink again! Yum!

ETA: Again, got a nasty smell upon putting the infuser basket into the hot water, but the result is a tasty lightly citrusy cup with no weird flavour/aroma. Decent enough!

Sipdown! 818.

I forgot that this tasted better the longer it was steeped. Oops. So it’s alright, but not wonderful (age may be a factor here too). It tastes a bit citrusy/orange, with the creaminess of banana, so does mimic a breakfast smoothie, although I think there are other HB blends that I’d prefer over this one.

Steeped the last of my share of this one (from the 12 Days of Tea) for a nice long time, and ended up with a tasty cup. Definitely smells like citrusy bubblegum to me, but in a pleasant way, not overwhelming. I can taste the banana as well. A pretty tasty honeybush blend!

ETA: Second infusion (half the water) is more citrusy. Still pretty tasty!

12 Days of Tea #2!

This one I initially couldn’t identify by aroma alone, as it smelled much like bubblegum. Luckily it tasted more on the citrusy side. I remember having had this one prior from a swap, and I think I liked it more then. Not a bad fruity honeybush blend at all, but nothing I feel the need to restock!

52teas 12 Days of Christmas Sampler 2012 – Day 2

I’m not a fan of Honeybush or banana-flavored teas. So, we’re off to a great start! :P I tried to remain open-minded while it steeped. Since I don’t make Honeybush often, I had no idea what the steeping parameters should be. I used 1 tsp in about 8 ounces of boiling water for 5 minutes. I didn’t add anything to it.

The aroma coming off this cup is probably divine if you like this sort of thing. To me, it’s…not appetizing. It’s kind of headache inducing. :( Not good. The taste is quite surprising! I taste pineapple and banana and a hint of orange. If I don’t inhale the smell while I sip it, it’s actually pretty good! Wow! Who knew?

For someone who doesn’t like anything about this type of blend, this must be a great tea to change my mind! It’s not enough to sway me completely though. I’m not loving the banana aftertaste that’s lingering in my mouth ten minutes after a sip. Yuck.

It deserves a much higher rating than I’m giving it. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt. :) Now I’m off to go see The Hobbit!!!!!!!!!! I’ve only waited my entire life for them to make this movie. Oh, and this is my 300th tasting note. :D

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me….. a Honeybush Breakfast Smoothie.

It’s only just turned into 15th December and I felt a little naughty and couldn’t wait for the morning. So I opened and was immediately taken away with a delicious fruity bubble gum odour. Beyond amazing!

The flavour is delicious, my favourite from Frank so far! It reminds me of fruity bubblegum gobstoppers I used to have as a child. I can pick out the pineapple and banana which taste so juicy and sweet.

I am in love with this, I wish I had more :(

I’m starting my day with a large mug of this delicious Breakfast Smoothie Honeybush tea. The last few days I have been using my gongfu a lot for white tea but after receiving my Della Terra order yesterday my taste buds want flavours and plenty of them.

I love this tea and it has quickly turned into one of my favourites. It’s a mixture of a banana fruit punch and bubblegum all in one amazing smooth drink. Great for hot or iced tea.

Very glad that I ordered two pouches of this :)

I will admit that I wasn’t terribly excited about this one when I opened it. I’m not a huge fan of honeybush, but I did get a little more interested when I smelled the tea. It’s aroma is really sweet and fruity, exactly like bubblegum. I brewed it for 6 minutes and the tea liquor smells the same as the dry blend. This tea is really flavorful – very fruity and leaves a sweet taste (again, like bubblegum) in your mouth. I think it reminds me of that zebra-striped gum that i had as a child!? This isn’t one of my most favorites, but my fiancé loved it!

-Dry blend is finely chopped honeybush with a few pieces of dried fruit.
-Dry leaves smell like fruity bubblegum. Tea liquor aroma is sweetly fruity.
-Tea liquor is a medium brown color.
-Very sweet flavor with a fruity finish.
-Sweetener optional.
-Fair tea. Slightly artificial bubblegum flavor. Very sweet without any added sweetener.

Thanks Sil!

This tea smells yummy. I’m smelling mostly banana as it cools.

I’m really enjoying honeybush teas thus far yay. This is no exception. It’s actually somewhat reminding me of Pina Colada Honeybush from 52Teas. Perhaps that’s the pineapple? Either way I’m happy I’m getting to try this one out – yum.

The resteep of this one is just as flavourful :)

Big thanks to Raritea for this sample. I like it!
It is very fruity, a little tart, and just the right amount of sweet.
With a little milk, it really does remind me of a smoothie. A juicy fruit, banana runt flavoured smoothie that is!
What I didn’t find was the yogurt note that some people are finding. Hence the added dairy.
If I didn’t have a reasonable alternative in my cupboard already, I would definitely consider snapping up a packet.

“Day two” of 52teas twelve day advent.

I’m not a huge fan of the smell of this one; it reminds me of those medicinal powdered dairy energy drinks. The liquid has that chalky Tums quality to it too- like the fruit ones. Maybe it’s because I haven’t slept in the last twenty-four hours but I think I like the “healthiness” of this more than I would on another day. Although, quite possibly, the opposite may be true and my grogginess may be hindering my appreciation for it. Will definitely try it again tomorrow.

Besides Tums, this also reminds me of a banana & pineapple flavored Orange Julius, which I don’t mind at all. Still not a huge winner for me at the moment, though.

This tastes increasingly better and less chalky when it cools down- more like its smoothie namesake.

first tea of the morning – cold brewed this yesterday to try as a cold tea first since most of the reviews have said the flavours really come out as it cools.

I’m not sure how i feel about this one over all. It smells like that banana medicine you used to get as a kid. The first sips of this are…intresting. there’s a lot going on that i can’t place. it’s a fruity, banana-y mess of flavours. i’ll have to try this hot to see if i like it better that way. cold is just kind of…weird?

52teas 12 Teas of Christmas – December 15

I absolutely love breakfast. It is by far my favourite meal of the day; something that I sometimes fall asleep looking forward to. I don’t like breakfast when it consists of little but sugary stuff, or something I have to gobble on the go (which happens far too often for my liking) – no, I need breakfast to be large and hearty and full of fat and protein for the rest of the day.

Eggs. Eggs are just about my favourite food in the world. Cheese. Toast. Bacon, which is pretty much the only part of a pig I will eat. Okay, maybe ham sometimes. Turkey and chicken. (What? Those are totally breakfast foods.) Hash browns. Tons of spice! Salsa. Cream, especially over eggs. Pancakes, with butter and fruit and syrup. Oatmeal, with whatever crazy things mixed in that you can think of. Cups of milk and fruit juice. Aaaaand…tea, of course! Usually black tea, but I will make wild exceptions.

I am not, however, the sort of person who makes “breakfast smoothies,” although I do like smoothies. Too much fruit, I guess, and not enough meat or eggs. Oh, and most people think of a breakfast smoothie as something containing a banana, and I am not supposed to eat bananas. In fact, that is the reason I did not order this tea when it was first released – I noted that the ingredients included banana. Granted, I’ve never been clear on how problematic banana might be when it’s steeped, given that no one explained to me exactly how my allergies could be triggered by bananas, just “don’t eat them.” So I’ve avoided teas with banana for a while now, just to be safe.

More recently, I’ve finally, tentatively, tried tiny amounts of tea with banana and worked up to full cups, and determined that I don’t seem to get any kind of reaction to steeped bananas. Cool.

So I’ve had a few cups of this now, and really quite like it. I’ve also taken it to work, and made it into an actual tea smoothie with mango and coconut puree, and that was awesome.

There’s quite a bit of leaf in this little packet, since it’s honeybush; I might be underleafing it some and compensating with the steep time, but I’ve gotten 3 cups of it so far and there’s maybe one or two more cups left. The smell of it is quite sweet, and really overpowering; it reminds me a lot of what Rainbow Sherbet did to my kitchen. I let this cool down because I have it with (what else?) breakfast, so it’s usually not that hot by the time I get to it. But that’s fine, because smoothie, right?

The first time I had it, it was sort of sweet and fruity in a non-specific way…but I didn’t steep it more than a few minutes. This time I gave it several minutes, and that seems to have changed the taste profile considerably. The strongest flavour that comes through here now is definitely banana, which is strikingly weird to me simply because of how long it’s been since I actually had banana.

Underneath that, the flavour that is suddenly coming out more is actually honeybush, not the other fruit. I’m not entirely certain if I like that; something about honeybush is a little weird to me. Combined with the other fruit, there’s almost a bubblegum aftertaste that reminds me of stuff dentists put in your mouth.

Still, it’s pretty good. My impression of it on various cups has ranged from “quite good,” to “awesome,” so I almost think it’s one I’d want to experiment with and maybe I should get a bag of the re-blend while I still can.

Oh, and I just tried adding a drop of cream to the last of this cup. That brings out the smoothie experience a lot, since it adds that smoothie creaminess, which is lacking in the flavour alone.

Another sample from the calender and I really didn’t like it. I think it’s too strong for me… maybe it’s the honeybush (I had the same problem with the monkey fart honeybush) oh well on to the next tea :D

Raritea

I used 1.5 tablespoons for 375 ml of water.

Upon smelling the dry leaf, I was immediately reminded of bubblegum scent which I think arises from the mixture of banana, pineapple and orange smells. This scent also carried over to the brewed tea. I’m detecting that honeybush beeswax candle smokiness in the background of the aroma as well.

On the sip I am definitely getting bubblegum flavour that blooms into a very full aftertaste. The beeswax candle smokiness is barely present but still there. This tisane is mildly sweet and hints at sourness. I can detect the citrus of the orange, the tang of the pineapple and the sweetness of the banana in the flavour.

52teas

Having a glass of this iced. I think this could be another VERY popular blend. It is really delicious. The orange, pineapple and banana are in perfect harmony. Just pure YUM.

Frolic

I did not like the smell of this tea. It was sickly sweet. I don’t like banana flavored things they always remind me of banana runts which are absolutely disgusting.

Soooo….

I was shocked and amazed when I liked this tea. I’m not going to rate it yet because I’m still a little undecided on how much I like it. Um I don’t know if I’m even making any sense cause I’m exhausted but I never really understand how the weirdness of Franks teas actually works. I mean a hot fruit smoothie? Ewww!

But no. This works. I kinda want to buy a bag but I’m scared to blow my tea budget too early and not have any left for the next 10 days of tea. I’ve already bought weeping angel and brown coat tea last night so I think I’m in trouble this month….

Hey, something that smells like banana and actually has banana! (But this time more like bananas and not candy.)

It tastes a lot like bubblegum when hot. Super fruity and sweet. I decided to have it iced, which kind of cuts the sweetness. All the fruit flavors are there, I think putting it over ice made each fruit more pronounced, because now I can taste each one.

This is good, very refreshing!

Onto day two, I again opened this last night and tried to guess what it was. I had completely forgotten about this one and was left wondering, bubblegum tea? Did I miss a bubblegum tea?

Ah yes, breakfast smoothie honeybush! I’d totally take a bubblegum tasting smoothie to be honest.

This time around though drinking it hot does not remind me of bubblegum. It tastes like all the fruits with a bit of creaminess. Mostly orange, then banana, not as much pineapple.

Still tasty though. This reminds me I definitely should go back to this tea. Tasty, tangy, and sweet. And not so bad after all when hot.

On the 2nd day of Christmas…

This was surprisingly enjoyable. I have to admit that at first smell, I thought for sure I would not like this. I’m not a fan of bananas and that is the main scent of the honeybush.

It tastes much like Juicy Fruit bubble gum.

I’m really enjoying these daily teas and sharing them with a great friend. Looking forward to finding what tomorrow holds.

Received this from kittylovestea, she was very generous with the tea.

Dry this smells very banana like & creamy. Can you even smell creamy? Like banana & yogurt.
Steeped it smells banana like, but more like banana runts than real bananas. The taste is that of a handfull of runts, minus the sweetness. But also hints of bubble gum.
Ok so I totally don’t get breakfast smoothie, but this is good. It paired greatly with my hockey in game in which we won…. woooo!
