Boo-Berry Cotton Candy

Green Tea by 52teas

Just in time for Halloween! We’ve blended Young Hyson and Gunpowder green teas, freeze-dried blueberries and organic flavors to create the most amazing blueberry cotton candy flavored green tea EVER. I will NOT be able to reblend this one right now, as this used up the last of my green teas for the moment, so don’t miss out!

I think I steeped this just a tad too long, so I can taste the green tea trying to be all astringent on me.

I seriously can still smell blueberry and sugar despite the fact I finished most of the cup before letting it cool. When it was hot, I mostly tasted blueberry. Have I ever told you how much I love 52teas’ blueberry everything? A lot. That reminds me I have blueberry zabaglione I have yet to try.

Now it’s kind of cold, and I can smell the cotton candy flavor in there. I can taste it more too. So sweet and tasty. I’m sure in no time it’ll be all warm again so I can cold steep it. Usually I’ll drink iced tea wherever but today just makes me feel like meh, no. Probably the gloominess of it. But blueberry cotton candy….how can you go wrong with the superior cotton candy. Although, I do prefer the black cotton candy flavor from earlier this year.

I knew this was going to be good, that’s why I made a blueberry cotton candy lip balm before every even tasting it, haha!

10th day of Christmas~

I decided to give this a shot of cold brewing. Not so sure about it that way, for some reason I was getting notes that reminded me of genmaicha.

It might need a longer steep or I just don’t like it this way. I may have to do a flash chill on it instead. It just didn’t come off sweet like candy.

I need to try it again soon but with a far lower temp too.

Happy Halloween! :)

I am enjoying this aptly timed blend thanks to my awesome sis-in-law Sare – thank you! I wish I had purchased this one. So delicious. I taste blueberries in one sip and mouth-watering cotton candy in another.

Wish this could be made available year round. I’d stock this permanently – one here at work, and one at home. Blissful boo berry!

The original 52teas Cotton Candy is one of those blends I hoard and store up for special occasions. I mean, it’s not every day that you get to drink a glass of pure cotton candy goodness! I’ve been keeping an eye out for similarly flavored teas, but the Red Leaf matcha is the only one that comes close. So of course I had to snag their new cotton candy tea! I mean, I love cotton candy, blueberries, Halloween-themed things AND 52teas so nothing could really go wrong.

I cold brewed this (because who wants to drink hot cotton candy?!) and holy WOW. At first sip I thought the blueberry was too strong and kind of dominated. And in a way it does—while you are drinking, it’s pure juicy and very authentic blueberry (not surprising since there are so many dried berries in the mix), followed by a mellow green tea taste. A little vegetal, a little sweet, but nothing to write home about. Then, BAM, at the end of the sip my mouth was filled with delicious cotton candy taste!

This is the perfect blend of cotton candy and blueberries—both are dominant flavors, and indeed both get a chance to “overwhelm” the cup, but you get them both in equal and delicious amount. Definitely a tea to be savored, I think you’d miss a lot of you chugged this one down. Another winner from 52teas! They’ve really been on a roll recently, between them and Red Leaf I feel like all my recent tealogs have had scores in the 90’s haha

It has come to my attention that I’ve been quiet here recently. Well the last week or so was super busy in this household with various out-and-about stuff. On top of that we’re being very frugal with our leaves and have got really good at resteeping a lot as opposed to giving in to the temptation for something else. So I thought it was time for one of these teas from the Christmas box.

This one had me a little sceptical because of the lack of success for me with the first candy floss one. This one has fruit as well, though, which did help a bit. However, I’m still not getting anything that really says ‘candy floss’ to me. I’m just getting something generically sweet. This works better for me here than it did in the other one because it has the berry element. That makes it a fruity sweet as opposed to just a sticky sweet.

Is it nice? Yes.
Does it live up to its name? No.

But I don’t mind that. Niceness is more important than name accuracy to me.

This is the second one from 52teas that I’ve had that was named something with boo-berry. I can’t remember the exact name or ingredients of the other one as it was some years ago, but I think it was simply called boo-berry and it had blueberries and marshmallow root in it. I think that one was on a black base whereas this is on a green base, and really most of all this reminds me of that other boo-berry one, as it might have tasted on a green base. I remember that other one as being very popular in this household. I believe that was the one where we nommed our way through a whole pouch in just three or four days.

So two different candy floss themed teas and rated completely opposite. Funny, that.

And oh look, I completely forgot to post this! It was because we were going into town in the afternoon, where Husband and I spent a nice couple of hours taking tea with Roughage completely without all those awkward silences that I had feared. (Last time we met up with someone from elsewhere on the interwebs, I left the meeting hoping that the other person didn’t think we were just completely boring…)

This one is going to need a little time for the flavors to mingle and meld but I can already tell that it is going to be a good one – the familiar notes of 52 Teas Cotton Candy black blend and of course those AMAZING PLUMP blueberries and SO many of them!

How have I let this one sit in my cupboard for so long without trying it??! Have I lost my mind? I do love 52teas’ Boo-berry black tea, and I LOVE their Cotton Candy black tea. So, here’s hoping the two combined in a green tea will be just as good!

The dry leaf aroma is recognizably blueberry and cotton candy. Yum! The brewed aroma is blueberry green tea with a hint of smoke. Uh oh. I’ve never liked smokey teas, so here’s hoping that gunpowder calms down a bit.

First sip is equally green tea and blueberry flavors. The aftertaste is where the cotton candy and smoke come out to play. Oddly enough, those two polar opposites seem to go well together. Now I’m not saying that it’s a pairing made in heaven, but it’s not horrible.

The more I sip, the more the blueberry floats to the background and the green tea becomes the most prominent flavor. That’s a little disappointing. I then added a teeny tiny bit of sweetener. That helped bring more cotton candy to the forefront, but I wonder what the second steep will be like…Two and a half minutes later, I’m sitting with a nice cup of green tea. Sadly, there’s no blueberry or cotton candy flavor left. But it is a nice high quality green tea!

So, the verdict on this crazy flavor pairing tea? Eh, if I had to take it or leave it, I guess I’d leave it. :( Sorry 52teas. I’m just not a fan of the smokey gunpowder. I’m sure as a black tea this would be drop dead incredible! Alas, this was not meant to be a favorite of mine.

52teas 12 Days of Christmas Sampler 2012 – Day 10

Oh man. I was hoping for a new tea I hadn’t tried before. This one is a disappointment. I love Boo-berry and I LOVE Cotton Candy. But this blend has a gunpowder base, and I’m not a smokey tea fan.

I went ahead and made a cup anyway just to see if it’s any different than I remember. The dry leaf aroma seems a little more blueberry and less cotton candy than before. The brewed tea aroma is blueberry and smoke. A LOT of smoke. Phew!

The taste is a little more enjoyable this time around actually. The smoke seems to stay mostly in the aroma, which I definitely wasn’t experiencing last time. It’s still in the flavor, but I’m able to taste around it. I can find a sweet, spun sugar likeness in this cup. Surprisingly, the blueberry is quieter than before. I remember that being the dominant flavor along with the smokiness.

Although this is a better experience, I’m leaving the rating unchanged. See, 52teas’ Cotton Candy tea has a lovely floral element to it. And Boo-berry is just blueberry perfection. But with the addition of a smokey green base, I’m losing that floral aspect I love and the blueberry seems to have left the party early. It’s good, just not great.

When I opened my 12 days of tea packet this morning and saw Boo-berry Cotton Candy I was so excited, I flailed my limbs and almost wet myself

…I should clarify…I almost knocked over my water filter jug and “wet myself”.

I really was excited though :D

I love the little cotton candy critter on the packet. I call him Bob…I don’t know why?

When I poured the hot water over this tea, a couple of blueberries plumped up and rose to the top as if they were in a freshly baked pie – oooh pwetty! This tea tasted delicious, even with my horribly stuffed up sinuses I would describe it as “pretty darn yumtastic!” I think there may be even more flavor that I’m missing out on, so I will have to try and save the rest to enjoy when my sense of taste and smell are back on track. I decided to rate this tea despite my suspected sensory deficit (wow, not sure why I decided to pull out such fancy terms when “snotty nose” would have also worked?). As it is, my rating is pretty much in sync with the average, so I figure that’s fair enough? If not, no worries, just ignore me.

Yummy! I think it may even taste better than last time? It’s probably because my little 12 days of tea sample is all done now. :(

I got 2 solid steeps out of the leaves, but the second one tasted a little less of blueberries than the first one, still very good though.

Slurp! As a hot or cold tea, it’s blueberry goodness, down to the last drop!

I loved the original cotton candy blend from 52 Teas, so I was excited to try this one as well since blueberry is one of my favorite flavors. The dry leaves are fruity and blueberry smelling. The tea liquor is a golden yellow color and the flavor is really delicate. I can definitely taste the blueberry and the light sweetness of the cotton candy comes through at the end. This one is better as it cools down. At the first sip the blueberry flavor tasted a little artificial, but this lessens as it cools down slightly. This is the perfect tea for Christmas Eve Eve!

-Dry blend has medium green rolled tea leaves. Tea leaves float to the top while steeping.
-Dry leaves smell like sugary blueberries. Tea liquor aroma is faintly of blueberries.
-Tea liquor is a clear medium yellow color.
-Slightly artificial blueberry flavor with green tea. Light sugar and berry finish.
-Best with sweetener.
-Fair tea. Very light blueberry flavor. Little cotton candy taste.

I also received this one from alphakitty

As I was sipping this I kinda forgot it was suppose to be cotton candy flavored. It was a nice, light, refreshing blueberry green ( but more generic berry flavour). I found as it cooled I tasted more blueberry. I really enjoyed this, but then got kind of sad after reading the other reviews and seeing everyone got the cotton candy flavour :(

sip down 7
I guess technically it’s not a sip down because I have enough for a tiny mug.
as I started sipping this & got the bitterness I remembered I wanted to cold brew this one & forgot. oops!
way over steeped this, getting strong black licorice flavours from it this time

12 Days of Tea #10! A fourth tea I’d not tried! We’re on a roll here :) I wonder what tomorrow will bring??

The dry leaf definitely smells like blueberry cotton candy. My initial thought was Black Currant Bai Mu Dan which I knew it wasn’t, but once I saw that it was blueberry, it did make sense. A bit of an artificial blueberry, however. Not an issue for me though.

Again, the fact that I’m sick isn’t really doing me any favours here, but I think I like this one. I’m definitely getting a blueberry sweetness which is quite nice, and there’s a nice heavy body to it which I assume is the green tea. I can’t really pick out the green tea itself, but I’m having a fair bit of difficulty picking out flavours to begin with!

I think I may prefer the regular Cotton Candy Black, but this is pretty tasty itself, for those times when you’re looking for a sickly sweet confection-sort of tea.

The roomie and I sipped down the last of this one from the 12 Days of Tea today. And to make it all the more awesome, I used my super cool new teapot from DavidsTea, and we drank out of my brand new tiny little double-walled glass teacups! So much fun! And she got me a teapot cosy for my birthday (which is tomorrow), so our tea stayed nice and warm while we drank miniscule cups of it.

Oh yes. And the tea itself was darn good. Definitely 100% an artificially flavoured tea, but a darn good one, all sugary sweet blueberry. Yummmm. We’ve had two infusions so far, perhaps will have a third (or I’ll let her just use the infuser in her Dr. Who mug or something).

Day ten

I’ll have a blue Christmas without you…

Just when I was starting to grow quite fond of my Cotton Candy Black from day one I ran out yesterday. I was beginning to fall in love with the lattes too. Thankfully, this came around and while it’s not quite the same as the other cotton candy tea it will do.

My first cup of this earlier in the day, which was under two minutes and with lukewarm water, was unbelievably perfect. I simply got blueberry flavour with a finish sugary artificial fuzz, which was very akin to blue cotton candy.

As soon as I took a whiff of my steeped cup I knew I had butchered my second cup of the day, and I’m blaming water temperature. This steep still has the cotton candy profile but the astringent smoky gunpowder is more prevalent. Maybe I should add some milk to it but it feels like sacrilege to add dairy to something with a green base- excluding matcha.

Ok, it’s fussy. I can work with that.

Heh sip down! Thanks to raritea for this one. It’s one that I missed out on picking up when it was reblended and I always regretted it. Raritea was nice enough to let me satisfy my curiosity. I can safely say that I’m glad I didn’t pick up a package of this. While its a pleasant enough tea, I’m not really feeling the whole cotton candy or blueberry in the intensity that I’d like for this kind of blend. Instead it comes across as a a tea stuck trying to be both and not really succeeding in doing either really well. Now, that being said, its still an enjoyable tea that im glad I got to try :) plus its a green tea!

Another one from Azzrian! Thank you! I’m always up for trying the amazing 52Teas blends. This one probably has my favorite picture on a tea package — the goofy cotton candy ghost! This one certainly smells equal parts cotton candy AND blueberry! I waited for the water to cool — no burning! I had no idea the best time to steep this one. I went for 30 seconds and tasted it. The flavor was equal parts blueberry and cotton candy as well! There was also barely a hint of the green tea base. But then I put the infuser in for another 15 seconds and green tea came out of hiding. So NOTE TO SELF: Go for 35 seconds next time. I really wish 52Teas would put steep times anywhere on their site or packaging. They should know… since they probably try a ton of cups to get the flavor just right. I have a bunch of 52Teas samples that I’ve tried one cup from each of them, and I think I may have oversteeped them even if it was for two minutes total. I think I’ll go for 30 seconds from now on and taste it before putting the infuser back in. But anyway, this is spookily like cotton candy and blueberry if you get the time right!

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave to me a mug full of … boo-berry cotton candy tea.

I had a cup of this before the review so I knew what to expect. With cotton candy being featured earlier in this set I was delighted enough with unflavoured, I had not considered adding flavour so my mind is all over the place with delight just at the prospect of it. That is why I had to have a sneak preview :)

It’s 10:30pm and at midnight I am going to do the last of my Christmas food shopping, it sounds mental I know but the queues should be short. Plus I’m no stranger to midnight shopping, it’s for the socially challenged individuals such as myself. I’m a little shy that’s all. Anyway this tea is to hopefully bring some calm before the storm.

The tea smells wonderfully sweet and fruity which is rather magical as it only looks like a standard green tea blend. Once brewed it still smells deliciously of sweet blueberries. The odour is stronger than the taste but in a way the subtlety is the charm, it makes it a green tea with flavouring rather than just a flavour with green tea thrown in. Saying that it mentions gunpowder green which I find is usually a little smoky but I can’t detect it at all in the blend. It’s definitely blue berry in flavour so it would suit my fruity moods too.

Some may like to add sugar to sweeten it up but for me it’s not necessary. This is another one of Franks tea’s that I think would be amazing as an iced tea.

Tea #25 from the ‘Here’s Hoping’ teabox.

Happy tea! My first sip of this tea and I had to smile. The cotton candy flavor was so spot on that it made me think of summer time and the amusement parks on the boardwalk. I thought I was missing the blueberry, but after the tea cooled a bit it was there. Yummy! It wasn’t long before both of my kids realized I was sipping something delicious and began asking for sips of my tea. Between the three of us my cup was empty in no time. Thankfully the resteep of this was pretty good, so we were all able to enjoy ourselves a while longer. Even my non tea drinking ten year old son gives this tea two thumbs up. This one’s a keeper!

Sweet Canadian

Everyone! I am sad/panicking because I just went to steep my first cup of this from my recent order, and there are no blueberries to be found! I know my 12 days of christmas sample had many, is this normal? Did anyone else get any recently without? I will email Frank but I thought I’d ask first, because part of what I loved about this tea was the plump blueberries within.

Oh boo-berry, where have you been?

Today has been a crappy day. In the midst of a panic attack and running out of ideas of what to do I remembered my tea had come this morning. I figured the caffeine was low enough it shouldn’t make things worse so I’d give it a go.

How can it be so sweet without tasting sweetened? Frank how do you work your magic? It’s not overly sweet it’s just right. I’m drinking it hot and plain and the blueberries are juicy, the coton candy is delish and the marshmallowness lurks in the background.

Now that I’m not going crazy with work and Christmas prep I have time to go back and review the teas that I missed from the sampler.

Blueberries + cotton candy + green tea seems like an odd combination at first glance but somehow this blend manages to make it work, and work well. This green tea base seems to work particularly well with sweet, ‘candy’ flavours – lime jello, marshmallow and, in this case, cotton candy. The cotton candy is only half the story with this blend, as actually the first thing I taste on each sip is the blueberry. Blueberry green teas are fairly common but the cotton candy flavour, which sort of sneaks in at the end, adds an extra twist to it. I enjoyed this one, maybe not as much as the lime jello but I still found it quite agreeable.

I used 1.25 tablespoons of dry leaf for 375 ml of water.

Smokey green tea and licorice-berry flavour on the sip. Cotton candy sugary sweetness in immediate aftertaste.

As the tea cools, I am noticing that the flavour is quite mild.
