Weeping Angel Tea

Black Tea by 52teas

So, yesterday was Steven Moffat’s birthday. For my customers who don’t know who he is, I feel for you. For those of you who don’t care, please forgive my self-indulgent nerd fest this week; this week’s tea will probably “not compute” if you are not a Dr. Who fan.

If you happen to be someone from the BBC’s legal department, please don’t sue me. As cool as it would be to be sued for my Dr. Who fandom, I really don’t have any money, and it would be a shame to “Exterminate” 52teas. We’re mostly harmless (to mix nerd references).

So, I’m sure you are wondering, what exactly is a Weeping Angel tea? Well, what else could it be, but a tea flavored like my favorite Dr. Who snack? It’s a buttered toffee caramel corn flavored black tea, and it’s heavenly–amazing enough to make a weeping angel smile.

But… Don’t Blink! This one will be gone before you know it.

In all honesty, the first impression reminded me of butterbeer. It’s buttery, sweet, and has a mellow black base. Instead of root beer, however, I’m definitely picking up a “corn” component, along with caramel and toffee; the self description is bang on. It feels like DT’s Movie Night too, although I like this better.

All in all, not bad! I wanted to drink this while watching the Christmas special, but ended up making myself some of that Browncoat Genmaicha for the occasion. As much as I enjoyed the Ponds I’m ready for some new faces.

Every time I reach that point where there are no more episodes out I always get the urge to go back and try to watch the old Doctor Who. I think I was up to The Aztecs (006/F) last time… Going to the beginning is like traveling in a time box. How things have changed! I wish I knew an easier way to get a hold of the episodes.

Edit: Backlog on second steep. I found the toffee component to be very vivid on second steep- the tea held up well! If I hadn’t had a toffee crunch kitkat bar a day before I wouldn’t have been able to pick it out at all; I thought it was from an interesting black base at first. I’m bad at distinguishing things!

Seriously … YUM!

I took the first few sips without any additions, and I found it so yummy, but, I thought something was missing … and that something was the popcorn. To remedy this, I recommend adding a tiny bit of salt. I added about half a pinch of salt to my 12 ounce mug, and it turned out perfect! The popcorn flavors emerged, and it gave a very enjoyable salty-sweet contrast without tasting too much like salt.

It is really good – rich, buttery, toffee/caramel-y deliciousness. Sweet and savory. Just GOOD!

We’re starting to get settled into our new home, well for the short term at least (prior to having to move back out for the big extension project that will likely start in a few months). We received the keys to the house at the beginning of the week, and we’ve been going going going ever since. It’s nice to finally be able to take a quick tea break to visit with my fellow steepster friends!

I must confess I don’t watch Dr Who…I have no idea what it’s about. I generally don’t watch much t.v., but when I do, it’s usually something that makes me laugh, like a sitcom, or Ellen, or something on the Home and Garden Network (Property Brothers is my favorite right now). So I know nothing about the angel on this package, or why she is weeping. I bought this tea solely based on the fact that it has the word caramel in the description…Dr. Who fans – don’t judge me ;)

This tea is making my living room smell delicious. I’m getting a lot of black tea, and the butter toffee caramel flavor is much more subtle than I anticipated. I think I may need to read some other tealogs for and see if any of you have figured out a way to coax the toffee flavor to the forefront. I really was hoping for more toffeeness, but when it comes to caramel flavored teas I like it front and center, I mean, borderline obnoxious. As I brewed this, it would suit people who prefer more subtle flavors.

Back to cleaning and unpacking for me… and enjoying tea, of course.
Claire, I believe you’re doing the moving thing also – cheers! I hope it’s going well for you :)

I had a not so great night, and this morning wasn’t looking much better. I kind of decided to make this tea out of irony.

mmm…It tastes rich and soothing, and I’m getting much more of the buttered toffee caramel corn notes this time, so I suspect it just needed a little extra time to cure. The flavor balances nicely over the black base. Delicious! This is exactly what I needed to improve on a day that was looking not so great at the outset. Now I’m going to head out into the sunshiny day, with my travel mug in hand, to check out the construction. I’m so excited to see the demolition!

I am the first? Yippee!

I made this tea for a little afternoon tea and cookies time with my hubby and a friend. The friend is fairly new to good tea – he told me a few weeks ago that all he had ever had was Lipton with milk and sugar. His first “good” tea shocked him. He said he didn’t know there was tea that wasn’t astringent. Now he takes his tea at my house with no additions because he says he really wants to taste and experience the tea.

For hubby, I added a tiny sprinkle of sugar that I was afraid was not enough for him, because he takes black tea with lots of sugar normally. But he liked this even though it was only lightly sweetened. Mine and our guest’s had no sugar and was delightful. The aroma is fabulous, from the moment you tear the top of the bag. The tea is smooth – I steeped on the short side, just three minutes, because I wasn’t sure what the base was. It would be fine longer, I think.

As it was, it was an excellent tea, and my guest was very enthusiastic about it and really enjoyed it.
I think the addition of milk and sugar would probably take this over the top into decadent dessert territory. I think I will try it that way next!

I served this at tea party today and it got an unusual reception. My guest sniffed it – we always sniff and swirl and observe and such as part of the fun – but she was really excited by the fragrance. “Is that caramel? And something else!” Yes, caramel toffee popcorn. Well, she curled her fingers around her cup and held it like someone would hold a hot chocolate when they just came in from a snowball fight!

I am definitely going to have to serve this one again and again for tea party day! It is a lovely flavored tea that needs no additions and is a great treat, and very satisfying.

I served this to the group last night as there were lots of Doctor Who fans present. It was very well received! I am getting low, too. This is one I would love to see Frank keep around!

The caramel and toffee flavors really pop, but the popcorn is definitely there, too.

So if i’m going to catch up to dinosara, i’m going to have to start focusing on the bags of tea where i’m only a few cups away from being done. So with that in mind, I’m having this one today. Dry aroma smells decent enough however the brewed tea isn’t anything much to write home about. Another diappointing 52 teas blend, though at least this one doesn’t have that weird chemically taste the others seem to be having. I still need to air my teas out and see if that helps.

269….12 days to sip down as much as possible! here goes nothing! :) If nothing else, this is incentive to try all the teas that i have in my cupboard.

So i’ve discovered…that i can only drink this if i add sugar, which i generally never do. Without the added sweetness to bring the flavours out, this is a like a very boring, bland, icky cup of average not so exciting black tea. Add a wee bit of sweetner and all the flavours that were hiding, come out to play! much better, but i still dislike having to add sugar. Rating bumped up a wee bit.

First impression: this tastes much like Pot O’ Gold. Kinda caramelly-sweet, and all that. I think I may have accidentally diluted it a bit too much, so the flavour’s a bit weaker than I’d like, but it’s good. Sadly though, this doesn’t have the amazing caramelly flavour of Cashew Turtle that I was really, really hoping for, but it’s a good enough blend. I’m finding it to be just a bit astringent/bitter; I need to try and remember to use my Finum filters for blends that have little particles that may make them bitter if they sit too long.

I will have to make sure that the boy warns me when we’re about to encounter the Weeping Angels in Dr. Who – IIRC they’re in season 3? And we just finished watching the sad, sad season 2 finale. :)

ETA: After sitting overnight, this one is actually BETTER. Tastes like liquid caramel corn in a cup! Awesome!

ETA again: Re-steep only has a bit of flavour, but it’s not great. Fairly typical for 52teas blacks, so I’m not too concerned! Just makes it easier to travel mug knowing I don’t need to resteep :D

Watched “Blink” tonight for the first time! Hoping I don’t dream of scary stone angels…

I sweetened this tonight as I was in such a mood for sweetness. It was alright. The highlight of my evening, though, was that boy said he would try some :) So I served him about 1/2 a cup’s worth, sweetened. He drank it all, but didn’t really have any comments about it except that it tasted like tea, and wasn’t bad, but there are other beverages he’d prefer. Which is fair enough; I don’t really think that flavoured blacks would ever be his thing. I’d be much more likely to lure him in with anything that tastes fruity/juicy. And sweet, haha. Either way, it was nice of him to try it for me :)

Yummy mug of this tonight (and shared some with my roomie as well!) It reminds me much of the first sample of Pot O’ Gold that I received from Amy oh, nice and caramelly. I confirmed that it does not resteep well/at all though. Virtually no flavouring left.

Not bad in the travel mug yesterday. Definitely tasted much like caramel corn. A few times it did taste a bit bitter, but I think that was because of the foods I ate prior to taking a sip, as it wasn’t consistent.

Soooo I only got started watching Doctor Who a couple months ago and when this tea came out I did not yet know of Weeping Angels. I might have still been in the second season? So I decided that when I got to Blink, I would enjoy it with a pot of this tea. (Must say, 9th doctor is still my fave.)

That day was clearly today! Flawed bubble teapot (good god I don’t even like the design of this teapot, if the lid is a certain way it forms a vacuum so then you just drip tea on your pants) and I sat down to watch. I have to say it was one of my favorites so far, and everyone is totally right…terrifying monsters these Weeping Angels are.

This tea is not terrifying on the other hand. I don’t really get the popcorn taste from it, but it is most definitely buttery toffee/caramel, and delicious. Sweet enough on its own to not need anything added, so you can down 24 oz of it in the span of one Doctor Who episode (I was thirsty though I’m pretty sure that this is going to be a regrettable course of action shortly).

Backlog from yesterday.

I bought this tea because I actually really love movie night from davids tea so was excited to try 52s caramel toffee popcorn. I read some notes so that I could get an idea for the ideal preparation method and I did about 3 mins at a little under boiling. Then I let it cool a bit. I could definitely taste the toffee-ish flavors, but no popcorn. So I added a little salt to see if that would bring out the popcorn, no luck. And then it just tasted strange.

Anybody have any suggestions for this one? I want to like it, but I couldn’t tweak it quite right. Suggestions?

What a disappointment. This tea sounds like it’d be amazing. I’ve tried so many different things and can’t seem to get much out of it. I just cold brewed it and it’s an ok tea, but it doesn’t really have any flavors that taste like buttered toffee caramel corn. Looks like this is going in the swap pile.

I think I suffered the same problem today with this tea as I did yesterday…I did rinse out my Timolino more, but I still got a very minor flavour with this. It was sweet, but that’s as much as I could perceive. I can’t really describe what I tasted aside from sweet. I know that it has been reformulated, but I don’t know which batch my sample came from. I think this is another one I will have to try again to drink out of my mug instead of Timolino.

This one is from CrowKettle, from our recent tea crawl and swap.

Sipdown…unfortunately, I still found nothing remarkable about this one, I am sad to say. Whatever flavour was there was so subtle, it went right past me, though it is possible that the tea is just older and lost some of its punch. I dunno. It was far from horrible, but miles away from excellent.

I’m not a Dr. Who fan, I’ve never watched Dr. Who, I’ve never even Googled Dr. Who…I once walked by the BBC section of FYE and saw the DVD case but that’s it. I am however a huge dessert tea fanatic and buttered toffee caramel corn black tea sounds like heaven to me.

I steeped it at 212 for 3 minutes, and I find with 52teas I have to let the tea cool a bit before I get the flavor. But on the first sip I get some caramel and a fabulously delicious black tea base, I have totally fallen in love with 52teas black tea base. As it cools I get a more buttery feeling and flavor. I’m not sure I can taste the toffee, either that or caramel and toffee are too similar in a tea to be differentiated. Or they just combine and complement so well that it doesn’t matter.

This is a tea that I really enjoy, and I will be happy it’s in my desk drawer for a while, but I won’t reorder it. I really like it, but I don’t LOVE it.

Swap from Alphakitty!

This one, once brewed, smells kinda like a hazelnut coffee…totally not what I expected. But it smells absolutely delicious!

What I’m getting in the tea is different, though. I’m getting the black tea base, some buttery popcorn taste, and a light caramel/toffee (toffee is a bit more pronounced) mixture. It kinda does remind me of coffee, actually…just not as potent. It’s a subtly sweet tea, with a nice toffee corn aspect. Reminds me of those Christmas-time popcorn ball things…only with black tea. Pretty good.

I’ll have to have the rest of this one while watching “Blink” with my sister when she comes home on Friday, just for reasons…

I bought this one because my 16-year-old son just loves Dr. Who. I thought it would be fun for us to drink it together when he comes to visit. So we’re sitting here watching Dr. Who, and I brewed it up. I have to say it doesn’t live up to its delicious scent. It has a smooth base, and if I really, really try, I can taste the caramel—especially after it has cooled down a bit. My son just thought it was OK. I think I really could have sold him if I’d brewed the Butterbeer instead.

I received this from alphakitty

I dunno what happened but I am getting mainly some astringency with the faintest hint of caramel goodness. Had to toss it.

Em sent me a bit of this to try and I’m enjoying it while I watch the Doctor Who Christmas special! This is a really nice tea with a sweet caramel-y flavour. It’s pouring rain outside and this just makes me feel all warm and cozy inside. _

Down to my last teaspoon of this — let’s see how many steeps I can get!

On a sidenote, I need to keep up with my tealogging; I’ve been slipping on adding tasting notes but not on drinking tea. Writing a lot of fanfiction lately and going through at least a couple cups while I write!

Drank so much tea yesterday, but decided I’ll just have to try them all again to post tasting notes :) Had this for a second time this morning. Really enjoy the nutty flavor. Great with a little sugar and milk (I’m obviously not a purist). Bonus: the Doctor Who reference is awesome. Weeping Angels are the scariest of the monsters, but they make a delicious tea :)

I’m a bit of a Doctor Who geek, so admittedly it was the name of this tea that intrigued me most at first. I mean, Weeping Angel…that’s inspired. Then I read the description — buttered toffee caramel corn. Also my kind of thing. Did I have to buy this? Obviously!

The dry leaf smells a little odd. There’s a tang of something that’s almost alcoholic, then something quite floral (the marigold petals?), and then a caramel scent, buried deep. Not quite what I was expecting.

Brewed, the tea itself is, thankfully, pure joy to drink. It tastes nothing like it smells, and instead is reminding me primarily of Butterkist toffee popcorn. The toffee/caramel is rich and buttery. Werther’s originals would be another good comparison, but to me this just tastes like popcorn. My favourite type of popcorn. It even has that slightly nutty, toasted flavour about it. The black base is perfect too, and beautifully supports and complements the flavours. I do get the slight sense that the flavouring has more to give, and might be hiding a little, but not to any great extent. It’s certainly one of the more convincing caramel/toffee teas I’ve tried. I might give it a try with sugar next time just to see, but at the moment I’m pretty happy with this tea.

As far as I’m concerned, Doctor Who, toffee popcorn and tea make an amazing combination. Possibly unbeatable. Great work, Frank!

Sipdown! My nightly drinkings have used up the last of this. I’m 99% certain that I’m cultivating a bit of a cold now, and really wish I had an extra cup of this to comfort me, but I don’t. Ho hum. Time to dig something else out of the stash!

Approaching sipdown on this one. I’ve been drinking it most evenings, at the expense of the other teas in my stash. I really do enjoy the caramel-popcorn combination it’s got going on — it’s almost like it was made for drinking in front of the TV (Dr Who particularly, obviously), or while watching a film. I’ll be sad when it’s gone, but at least it’ll force me to start drinking something new again!

I was a bit worried when I smelled the leaf. It smelled of caramel and … something funky. Wouldn’t know how to explain it. My worries melted away after I steeped it though. Apparently this tea just has a bit of a funny dry smell! :)

I couldn’t find any steeping instructions on the website, but maybe I was just impatient and didn’t read thoroughly enough. This is already later than I should be having a black tea as it is, so I was in a bit of a hurry to get this going. So I went with the assumption of one teaspoon per 8oz, used boiling water, and steeped for three minutes, which is always safe for a black tea.

Anyway, yum yum~ :D This tastes like caramel popcorn! Makes a great dessert, but I wouldn’t drink this every day. For a sweet tooth day, I’ll definitely be scooping some of this up, putting in a little milk and sipping happily with no guilt.

I am going to adjust parameters for the next cup though. This tastes really good, but I do feel like it’s not at its full potential for delicious. Perhaps I should try a four minute steep. That works well with the Coconut Cream Pie. :)

I’ll enjoy this pouch to the end, but this isn’t a re-order for me. Meanwhile Blueberry Cream Cheese Danish and Coconut Cream Pie I’d have on hand all the time if I could for my dessert cravings. :)

Swap sample I got from Cheetah_Pita! I am really enjoying this tea this afternoon. The buttery component is pleasing with the (probably too large) amount of sugar I added. I’m really glad I got to try it, thanks again for the swap!

Oh yum, that’s good… It took me a couple tries to get the steeping parameters just right, but now that I did, this is one tasty cup of tea.

It’s roasty and buttery with a touch of caramel-like sweetness. The black base is very smooth, and it presents no bitterness when steeped for a short time. Following another Steepster’s advice (thanks, LiberTEAS!) I added a pinch of sea salt to the second half of the cup. Yup, there’s the popcorn!

Steeping:
tea amount: 1.25 tsp
water volume: 8 oz
temp: 208 (F)
time: 2.5 min

ETA: Re-steep (at 3min) with almond milk tasted super buttery and dessert-like.

Sipdown! Yay, working my way back down to a manageable 50 (plus a few samples, but those don’t count, right?)

ETA: I fail on the trimming down my cupboard front. I needed a new iced tea pitcher, so just ordered one from DavidsTea… along with 2 individual teas + the entire summer collection. Sigh, I’m incorrigible.

This is one of those rare teas where I have to add extras to really enjoy it. With milk and a couple brown sugar crystals, it’s pretty delicious. Without additions, it’s just pretty ok.

That said, it makes a darn fine dessert tea when it’s all dressed-up!
