From 52teas

As difficult as you might imagine it would be to replicate a Pan-galactic Gargle Blaster here on Earth, particularly since the only ingredient we could obtain here would be the olive, it is an even MORE difficult task to create a non-alcoholic tea inspired by the drink. BUT I think we have succeeded in creating something awesome. Here’s our awesome premium black tea base blended with organic lemon-, brandy-, bourbon-, sherry- and red hot cinnamon flavors, cinnamon chips, lemon balm, lemon myrtle, lemon verbena, lemongrass, some chili pepper flakes and a TEENY touch of cayenne pepper to give it that little extra bit of BITE. Instead of an olive we added a tiny touch of organic maraschino cherry flavor for sweetness. I’m sure my creation can’t hold a candle to the awesome concoction from the fertile imagination of Douglas Adams, but I’m pretty sure it will put a smile on your face anyway, and now you can offer your guests a cuppa PGB.

Finally getting around to trying the last tea I bought from tea-sipper this summer! I guess this one was sort of an impulse buy because the listed ingredient combo is not really the sort of thing I like. It tastes like a pretty plain, mild black, but there’s also a tingling from the spices. I can’t taste them, but I can feel them! I added some sugar and milk, and it tastes fine, but with all the awesome teas on my shelf, I’ll probably give this away to a family member rather than drink another cup.

tea-sipper

Yeah, this tea was never as awesome as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy is, but what tea COULD be?

AJRimmer

Very true!

Mastress Alita

One of my favorite book series. I have all five books in the trilogy on my shelf.

AJRimmer

I actually never read the fifth one, but I have the set, so hopefully I have more time for reading this year!

Mastress Alita

I know how that goes. I’m a librarian and never have the time for more reading! Pitiful.

I have been meaning to read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams for a while and I WILL read it this year! Soon soon. I have a too-many-books-to-get-to problem like I have a too-many-teas problem. :D This tea is inspired by the PGB drink in the book. I love the graphic on the pouch! I wanted to try it while reading but I have so many pouches I wanted to try it to see if I wanted to swap any. The blend is fine, but like I said so many pouches of it! I didn’t look at the ingredients list right before I tried it, so I could guess what it tasted like. It’s mostly cinnamon to me. And occasionally a flavor that tastes like flat soda. The result tastes like something more bakey when the flat soda doesn’t hit the tongue. Whatever is here doesn’t make the black base too terrible though.
AFTER looking at the ingredients WHOA are my tastebuds not getting any of these: any of the three alcohol flavors, any of the many lemon ingredients OR any of the spicy pepper flavors. So maybe this blend fails on that level. Or my tastebuds do.
Steep #1 // 1 tsp // few minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled // 3 min

Do you read a lot of SF/fantasy? I’m posting reviews of them on my book and tea site (www.booksandtea.ca). Of course, this is only a good idea if you want your to-read pile to grow even bigger. ;-)

tea-sipper

Oh thanks! I do read SOME scifi, but I read a few different genres. It seems like I have a lot of scifi on the TBR sooner list though. :D

If you’ve got the time, you should see if you can find the Hichhiker’s Guide radio show, which actually came before the books. It’s HYSTERICAL.

tea-sipper

Thanks for letting me know, teataku! I’ll keep that in mind. :D

This is interesting – I thought it would be spicier than it is, but it was just warming. Low heat, but with a bit of kick. The citrus blends in with it well, and I find that it tastes a bit sweet too. There are so many flavors, I honestly couldn’t pick them out upon tasting it without referring to the official ingredients list. But I am glad that the amalgamation was an overall good one, and not a yuck one.

Backlog:

OK, so I was seriously excited about this tea. But I was also just a tad afraid of it. I mean, a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster is supposed to be like getting your brain smashed by a slice of lemon that’s been wrapped around a gold brick. I wasn’t too sure I was ready for all that excitement.

Somehow, I summoned the courage to try the tea and hoped that the brain smashing with a lemon wrapped brick wouldn’t be too jarring.

At first, the tea is mellow but after about three sips, the flavor starts to hit the palate like a lemon slice that’s been wrapped around a cinnamon stick and a chili pepper. It’s sweet and spicy and tangy and fruity. I’m less efficient at picking up the alcohol flavors and I blame that on the fact that I’m a tea-totaler.

The black tea comes through as a pleasant, rich tasting base. I like the low-and-slow burn that I get from the chili pepper and cinnamon. It’s spicy but not too spicy. It’s tart but not too much. It even has a little sweetness from the maraschino cherry.

Nice. A good tribute to one of my all-time favorite movies. No, I haven’t read the book yet.

All the versions of the Guide are pretty different, so it’s worth checking out most of them. My first experience was the BBC radio show, then the book, then the really terrible BBC mini series (?I think?) and then finally the newer movie.
