Malted ChocoMaté

Herbal Yerba maté Blend by 52teas

I had soooo much fun last week with the malted genmaicha, and after hearing several people ask why we didn’t make it a chocolate malt, I decided we should do a chocolate malt tea this week. Here it is, our Malted ChocoMaté!

This is roasted yerba mate with organic cacao nibs and all natural chocolate and malt flavors. It is one delicious energy kick!

Thank you The Quiet Life for allowing me to taste this wonderful tea.

I loved the flavor of this tea. The chocolate shines through and the mate makes for a rich malty taste. I LOVE the depth of and complexity of flavor in this tea. However, the caffeine was overwhelming have to have this in small bits.

WARNING Do not consume after taking Darvocet Wow, it will make your heart pop out of your chest. Yikes!!!

I gently set the tea on the table to steep when my beloved looked up from his book (a rarity since he hardly ever notices me when he’s deep in a book), sniffed the air and said, “Chocolate tea?” It really does smell good, like good deep chocolate.

It tastes wonderful with a creamy, malted, chocolate, mocha taste and something slightly grassy. No bitterness. No astringency. No weird dusty taste. It’s a far cry from my yerba mate experiences of twenty years ago. (Those were the experiments that led me to swear never, ever, ever again to try yerba mate.) It’s quite nice. I can see using this as a base with ice and soy milk for a chocolate malt smoothie.

Mmmm! Delicious! 52teas outdid themselves with this one. It really is like sipping a warm chocolate malt. Very comforting on such a cold day! Soon we will be out in 13 degree (!) weather for our run and I’ll be glad to have this warm bit of comfort in my tummy. I’ll probably need another when I return. For medicinal purposes, of course.

I’m upping the rating because I found myself craving this tea. Always a good sign with a tea.

I love the smell of this one. I opened my cupboard this morning and was hit in the face with chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. I couldn’t help but make a cup to bring to class with me. It’s like healthy hot chocolate, especially if you add milk and sugar like I do. Too bad it’s so hot out because I don’t think this will be good iced. Oh well, I guess I’ll just wait until next year to enjoy this again! It certainly was a winter favorite.

Another one from Ricky. Thanks!

I’ve never had Mate before, but I know it’s supposed to be a good energy rush without the caffeine crash, so what better day to try it than on the morning of my big history test? This is also my first time trying 52teas, and I’ve got to admit, I was really psyched and they totally lived up to my expectations! Well done 52teas!

This one smells very strong. I could smell the chocolate from inside the bag Ricky put it in, and then from inside the envelope he mailed it in as well! Talk about chocolaty! And I have to say, I’m enjoying this a lot! It is very chocolaty of course, but it isn’t sickeningly sweet. It’s smooth, creamy, and delicious. Next time I try this I’ll add milk, but it’s so creamy it doesn’t really need it. Some sweetener might benefit it though.

But anyway, I’m very happy with this! Thanks Ricky!!!

Yay, it came today! Tearing the bag open… Oh my. I can see the nibs and it smells like… Like a delicious artisan dark chocolate bar. I could barely wait for the water to heat. It steeps to a beautiful dark amber liquor. And the smell… Like melting chocolate, dark chocolate, with that faint hint of bittersweetness and the tang of the malt behind it.

Yet the taste is even better than the smell! I don’t know how these guys do it with these flavors, but the supporting base is so mellow and smooth. This reminds me faintly of Godiva liqueur, only not sweet. I’d go into overload if I actually put sugar in this. I seriously need to be alone with this. Bravo yet again.

(I have a KitchenAid mixer with attachments, and I think this spring, this would make some DAMNED incredible ice cream if I simmered it in the cream.)

Even though the instructions say to use boiling water I’ve heard that maté can get scalded and become bitter like green teas, so I kept the steeping temperature at 90ºC. The tea smelled so incredibly chocolatey when I opened the package, like one of those rich chocolate shakes you can sometimes still get at diners. I could see that cocoa nibs mixed in with the mate leaves aswell which is a good sign – I always like it when a company uses real ingredients instead of ‘flavouring’.

The first thing I can taste when I sip the tea is the mate; it has the roasted, nutty, and slightly vegetale flavour that is unique to that particular plant. But underneath there’s a creamy, malty flavour with a hint of sweetness that makes me think of Ovaltine a bit. The chocolate is there too but maybe not as a stong as I wished I was – although that might just mean that I need to steep it longer. The taste lingers subtly and pleasently in the mouth, not letting itself be dismissed.

This is a wonderful, unique blend that I really enjoyed drinking. Congrats to Frank for creating another winner.

made a half cup of tea, steeped about 9 min, iced it down, and stirred in about 3 scoops vanilla ice cream (too lazy to bother with blender). MMMM tastes very chocolatey and malty – I think the vanilla is bringing both out nicely.

It’s Here It’s Here It’s HERE !!!!!
My mailing envelope was punctured but luckily my teas were not!
(puts kettle on before she’s even got the package open. )

dry smell: chocolatey, malty, and a definite undercurrent of fruitness
brewing smell: strong roasty smell upon first pouring the water over

liquor: orangey-brown
scent: chocolate first, then malt with a hint of “roasted” scent
taste: there’s a definite “mate” earthiness, more so than I was hoping for. The chocolate hits you afterwards. The malt is in there somewhere but I’m having a hard time distinguishing between it and the roasted flavor of the yerba mate. (probably just my tastebuds are a bit off today due to a sore throat.) Anyway, I like that it’s brisk upfront and then rounds out into a deeper sweeter chocolaty-er flavor. Sugar and/or cream may mute this effect but I don’t want to add either to this cup.

This is the first yerba mate I’ve really liked, so that’s saying something. I think I’m going to hold off rating until I’ve had a couple more cups or even tried it cold. I’m not as blown away as I hoped to be, (then again I’m not a mate fan) but I am definitely impressed. I think my husband, who drinks mocha and mate, will really like this, which is nice because there are very few teas we both like.

I thought I’d be clever and try to make “chocolate covered bacon” tea by brewing about 1 1/3 Tbsp f this with 2/3 tbsp Maple bacon. All I got was a muddled mess of flavors, which did not improve with chilling.

I’ll leave the tea blending to the experts (Frank)!

made a big mug, am chilling it for a vanilla float later. This tea is SO good with vanilla ice cream!

I was hesitant to try 52 Teas because I’m rather conservative when it comes to flavored tea and their blends sounded too complicated or exotic. So it’s rather strange that I ordered this, especially considering that I’ve never had mate before. But chocolate and malt, those two can’t go bad, I thought, so I gave it a try.

And I’m happy I did. I opened the pouch and immediately smelled rich chocolate with a hint of malt, mixed with the mint (not exactly mint, but a distinct refreshing scent that I think comes from the mate). I’m sure this is great straight, which I will try perhaps tomorrow, but today I enjoyed it with milk and sugar. It has a lot of flavor but doesn’t get too heavy because of the mate base. I made a big mug-full so I left a bit to chill to see how it’d taste iced, and it’s very good. I can see myself making iced tea latte or shake with this one.

This is my favorite tea at the moment, but I’ll see how I like it straight and if it’s still as good as the first time after several more tries. As of right now, I would love it added to the permanent collection, esp. 52 Teas has yet to add a yerba mate!

Okay so my first order from 52 Teas arrived and I rip it open and smell this wonderful deep dark chocolate Mate smell. I boil some hot water and let it go for about a 5 minute steep and to my surprise the liquor is not very dark in fact it is kinda ambery in color. I then take a whiff and I still get chocolate only not as much as post steep. I let it cool and take a sip and I get nothing! I mostly just taste hot water and a hint of chocolate flavor. If this is the case I’ll be sticking with Teavana’s My Morning Mate but I won’t give up on it just yet I’ll try some different steep times and maybe more Mate and see what happens I’ll wait till then to rate it to give it a fair shot.

Update: Giving this tea a second time this time going for seven minutes at the suggestion of some of my fellow steeps and I still get a hint of cocoa flavor but honestly nothing about this tea is WOWing me. :( I like big bold flavors unless of course I am drinking a white or green tea but otherwise I like big bold flavors and this just doesn’t do it. My rating on this tea is not because it’s bad but because it lacks flavor.

Finally some tea! I had a dentist appt this morning so I’m just now having my 1st cup. From Ricky! Also my 1st mate… I really need to try my best to start trying the base of teas before a flavored version, it’d make reviewing a tea a heck of a lot easier.

Whoa! The raw “leaf” smells really chocolatey! Definitely a “I gotta grab my spoon!” tisane. But… unfortunately the aroma of the decanted tea loses some of that. It still tastes like chocolate, but now there are also notes of roasty and spicyness.

I was really hoping this would be like liquid chocolate as others have described, but I’m not getting it. The roastyness and weird spicyness are taking away from the chocolate.

I’ve got maybe one more serving to go after this one. I will miss you malted chocomate. I was thinking of getting more, but I have decided that life (and money) is too short to go around repeating teas unless they are a particularly delicious Earl Grey (:P) Considering that basically every time I receive the 52teas newsletter I want what’s in it…it’s time to seize the day! or the tea! That’s right! (are you ready for it?

it’s gonna be bad…

better mentally prepare now….

I’ll give you a few more seconds…

ok, time’s up!)

Carpe Tea-em!

Starting off my bday with a celebratory cup of malted chocomate! How is it different then my normal morning cup of malted chocomate…it’s not! MWAHAHAHAHA
Ah, malted chocomate, truly you are the best morning tea. I am going to be so sad when I run out of you in…oh…two days or so :(

Oh breakfast cup of malted chocomate, TOO LONG have we been separated! The days without your roasted chocolateyness waking me up have felt like years!

But alas, I regret to say that you are not first in my mind at this wonderful moment. That, sadly, is reserved for my Ingenuitea. Oh IngenuiTea, you are SO CONVENIENT. I have missed you!

Tried this with a short steep time today to see what it was like. Looks like I like it most with the shortest and the longest steeping time! It’s a little weird because a lot of the other people said 7 was the sweet spot and I totally didn’t get that at all. Maybe I’m just doing it to be contrary.

Hmm I just noticed that 52teas (Frank? I guess it’s Frank, but I feel weird calling him that. That’s just me though. After two years I still haven’t started calling my thesis adviser by her first name.) was raving about this in latte form, so clearly I should try that as well.

You know, when I joined Steepster I was all like “BAH TO SWEETENER AND MILK IN TEA,” and it seems like these days I’m just like “what? add milk? sure!” On the other hand, as far as plain black tea goes, I still don’t add milk or sweetener. I just like to experiment with nifty teas! If someone wrote “holy shit this tastes so awesome when you add Dr. Pepper to it” I would probably try that as well :P Well not really, I hate Dr. Pepper.

My other 52teas purchase (yes! I limited myself to only 2. Why do you think I then had to avoid steepster until the sale was over?) I had been extremely interested in this for my original 52teas purpose in the hopes that it would be able to replace my matevana-toffee rooibos blend from Teavana (they no longer make the toffee rooibos). Unfortunately, they were out of it at the time, but have (obviously) since restocked (yay!).

Interestingly, I do not get the overridingly chocolatey scent that other people have reported from my batch. Mostly I get a roasted smell – almost like burning wood, as well as a light kind of dusty cocoa smell. Very interesting.

For my first cup I decided to just go with it completely plain, going with 7 minute steep time after reading the other notes on this. After seven minutes, the tea’s color was a fairly midrange brown, and the scent of the cocoa had come out more but the roasted/malted scent was still dominating.

The taste is…quite complex. There’s spiciness, which has since resolved itself into more of a cocoa flavor as the tea has cooled. The malty taste is also there. And SOMETHING is combining to produce this almost minty taste. Perhaps that’s the mate itself? I confess to not having had a lot of plain mate, although the taste I associate with it is also there, so…dunno!

When hot, it was all spicy, malty roasty good lord this is heavy. As it cools the chocolate is coming out a LOT more – which makes me think (for some reason) that the addition of milk would bring it out even further. That will definitely be trial number two. The spiciness is also receding as the temperature decreases, which is good because we are not quite past the time in the morning when my belly rebels against spiciness of all kinds. Oh yes, I am definitely getting the liquid chocolate vibe a lot more, although the malty taste is still providing a fascinating backing to it.

Aside! So last night I dreamt that I went to a big gourmet tea place which for some reason also sold chocolate malt balls (and was haunted, but that’s not as relevant. Besides with the aid of some kids and their lovable dog I was able to discover that it was just the groundskeeper trying to scare off customers). Anyway, I didn’t get a chance to try this last night when it actually came in and between that and worrying about my tea frog order possibly being stuck in customs, (I didn’t get tracking on my order so I have no idea what it’s actual status is but Morgana mentioned that her package appears to be stuck at the border, so…. Are they just confused about what it is? or…are they DRINKING MY TEA THE BASTARDS) I guess I have tea on the brain. (End Aside)

Anyway, so I was thinking of using this as my morning tea but I think it’s a tad to heavy for that – although we’ll see what adding milk to it does. I’m still quite pleased with it, though – a very nice addition to my tea cupboard. I’d noticed lately that it was getting a little black tea heavy, so I’m definitely glad to introduce a little variation into it.

Smells Great! Looking forward to trying this.
After steeping though i was a little disappointed. Really am not getting a alot of chocolate in this. I added some milk and sugar to try and bing it out. As it’s cooling i’m getting a little more aftertaste of cocoa but not really the chocoalte i was looking for.
