Malted ChocoMaté

Herbal Yerba maté Blend by 52teas

I had soooo much fun last week with the malted genmaicha, and after hearing several people ask why we didn’t make it a chocolate malt, I decided we should do a chocolate malt tea this week. Here it is, our Malted ChocoMaté!

This is roasted yerba mate with organic cacao nibs and all natural chocolate and malt flavors. It is one delicious energy kick!

This tastes like bitter cocoa beans…with arugula and kale. :/
I’m discovering that I don’t really like the taste of mate, nowadays. And the cocoa and malt don’t seem to redeem it that much, sadly.

The mate makes the chocolate taste like carob. blech, I hate carob ;/

Well this one is certainly going down easy. :)

This is my Sunday morning breakfast tea this week (I have lots I need to do today, and this hopefully will help me accomplish that). So, I’m pairing this with biscuits and syrup and getting ready to head out.

This does seem equal parts tea (even though it’s technically mate) and equal parts chocolate, which is a nice. I mostly taste chocolate towards the swallow, with the “malt” more present in texture than taste.

I’m no chocoholic but I think it could definitely help whenever I do get a (rare) chocolate craving.

Late night studying is much more enjoyable with a highly caffeinated beverage. Actually, it’s really only possible because of this highly caffeinated beverage.

Parameters: 2 tsp. leaf to 500 ml. water steeped at below temp/time. I added some half and half and sugar this time around because a.) I needed to use up the half and half, and b.) I need all the extra energy I can get. It’s a nice hearty chocolatey drink that is starting to work it’s magic quite well.

P.S. Also because of late-night studying I happened to get the email about the 52teas Christmas sampler and used my 10 minute self-imposed study break to update steepster and snag one. SO. EXCITED. TO PARTAKE. THIS YEAR.

sigh study break done…

sigh Exam time again.

At least I have this to look forward to when studying (or cramming, if I’m honest!). The texture and taste were wonderfully thick and chocolatey tonight; and I’m feeling nice and alert because of it. I drank this straight with no additives and enjoyed the brief respite before getting back to the grind.

Sleep is for the weak, I’m convinced of it. ;)

I’ve decided I’m going to make it a 52teas/mysweethoneybush/man teas week-end .. So after a breakfast of Monkey Fart, I moved on to Malted ChocoMate for my after-lunch/noon-time beverage ..

I’m writing this after my third cup .. The first was drunk with a dash of milk; the second a teaspoon of sugar (no milk); and the third had both, which is definitely how I prefer it .. Oh and the third was made with all fresh leaves as someone had cleaned out my teapot .. Unfortunately I just couldn’t appreciate it without something extra to boost the flavour ..

I think I’m in the minority on this one, but I find there’s no-where near as much chocolate as I would like .. And the malt, while more obvious as it cooled off, was actually more of an after-taste ..

It smells fantastic both dry and in the cup, but I’m afraid it just isn’t delivering what I expected, or more importantly what I was wanting from it ..

Mrawlins2 shared this tea with me:)
The weather today is chilly, seemed like a perfect time to try out this tea!
Added a few rock crystals in the brew basket, waited…..added milk and the smell is to die for, chocolate wafts to my nose as I take my first sip: sweet notes intermingle with the chocolate. Smooth tea taste:) First impression, I am so glad this on the permanent collection! and I really must get off the computer because I have to drink this tea while it is hot…later!

Mmmmm. I completely had to remind myself that I was drinking tea (well, mate) and not coffee! Wow, this one is really close to coffee. I am not an avid mate drinker, but I used to be a huge coffee addict, so this is a real treat. I definitely taste chocolate along with the coffeeish taste. Mine is sweetened and with milk added. Thank you to FairyFli for sharing! (Yeah, she sent me some real gems this week! There are at least two more!)

Despite not doing anything at all today, (no class or work scheduled on a Tuesday.. plus, there’s a bunch of snow outside) I’m hitting the afternoon slump. I’ve already had a nice cup of coffee, but I could use another boost at the moment. This is one of the first teas that I ever wanted from 52Teas. Dry leaf smells like chocolate, with hints of banana and sweet grass. While steeping, I’m smelling more of the sweet grass with just a little bit of chocolate.
The taste is quite interesting. It’s very smooth and sweet and I can taste the chocolate. I was expecting the chocolate to be a bit stronger and creamier. Sadly, I don’t taste any malt! This is definitely very tasty. I will have to try the honeybush version of this tea. I think I might like that one even more if it’s creamier and with more chocolate flavor!

Definitely lowering the rating on this today. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it, it’s just that I’m liking it less than my first try. It’s chocolate, but I’m detecting a kind of artificial note that I’m not fond of. It’s tasting kinda gross to me now.

This is a super dessert tea! Mmm roasted malty mate with lots of CHOCOLATE flavor! Thanks for the sample Dustin. I’d definitely buy this one someday.

Sipped on a big to go mug of this all afternoon while out shopping in the rain. This weather is such a bummer! It’s going to snow tonight, too.

Backlogging.

Got a sample of this and I wish I had more. As soon as I opened the sample I could smell chocolate – really, really strong chocolate. However, the steeped tea is pleasantly bittersweet and the chocolate isn’t over the top. The yerba mate compliments this well and I’m really glad I got to try this.

Finishing this up today, and I’m really not impressed by it this time as I got quite an unpleasant coffee flavour on the finish. The chocolate was quite strong today though, which was all well and good but the coffee-like flavour was a bit much to cope with.

This is a good basic chocolate Yerba Mate. It is actually pretty chocolatey, but I’m not getting the malt flavor. I would have no problem drinking this on a regular basis. As good as this is, I still slightly prefer Teavana’s Yerba Mate blends. Prepared with almond milk and stevia.

I was really hoping that this would be the tea that would make me like yerba mate. Really hoping. I should really know better by now not to let my hopes up like that, but I keep trying.

The dry tea smells like chocolate with a hint of something else, tobacco maybe? And after steeping, the tea smells like chocolate and malt and some yerba mate smell. The taste is strongly of the mate with some chocolate and a hint of malt in it. The combination is kind of a weird flavour and I can’t say I like it at all. Which is really too bad because I really really wanted to like this tea.

I bought this as part of my first order ever from 52teas. I had gotten two bags.

On my first cup of this blend I was sort of underwhelmed. I oversteeped it a bit and had too much mate flavour. Then I tried it again the next day, studied the flavour more and how the whole cup felt when finishing it and it showed me more of its wonder. I could pick out the hints of malt and chocolate but what really stood out is how smooth this one is. Frank seems to know how to make his blends really flow well. I did this again the next day and before I knew it, I was missing it and/or looking forward to it.

I had gifted my second bag to a friend who loves tea as well and have more coming for myself in the mail.

I bought this in an attempt to find a mate I like. The reports of its great chocolateyness convinced me. To be fair here, I haven’t liked any mate I’ve tried. But I do like chocolate, which I was hoping would override it.

It does smell very chocolatey in the bag, but once I brewed it I got worried. It just smelled like mate. So I courageously took a sip and, well, it didn’t taste like much of anything! There was a tiny hint of chocolate but not much going on. I think I used plenty, so I will have to try steeping longer. On the bright side, it didn’t taste like unpleasant mate to me. It gets points for that. I decided to heat and whisk some chocolate almond milk I have but since that itself doesn’t taste like much, it only improved it slightly.

I don’t know. It was okay but I ended up forgetting about it halfway through the mug and never finished.

This tea seems to be regarded by some as one of the most chocolaty teas out there. So, being the chocoholic that I am, I had to try it. :P

The tea itself smells chocolaty, with a hint of maltiness and a touch of roasty.

I originally steeped it for about 6 mins, but it was still pretty light, so I left it in for an extra couple of minutes while I let the water cool down to not-burning temperature.

The tea tastes chocolaty, as one would expect. Not as chocolaty as a chocolate bar, but still chocolaty. :) There’s a hint of malt in there too, which adds to the tastiness.

It’s nice and smooth, which I like, but it doesn’t really have a strong flavor. I think next time I’ll add more leaf and see how it goes. What’s there is yummy, but I would like it to be a bit more flavorful. (Could be that I used the not-boiling water at work instead of actually boiling water, as is suggested.) But I definitely like it, and I can see myself having this in the morning (when caffeine is needed) quite often. :)

It’s ok. I don’t think I brewed it long enough.

Thanks Sare for sending me a sample of this! When I first tasted it, I was a little disappointed. It didn’t really taste chocolatey or malty or really like anything at all, but it has gotten such good reviews here that I didn’t want to give up yet. I decided to add a little bit of sugar, which is something I never do, but it seriously made a huge difference. The chocolate was much more prominent. Yum.

I drank this a few days ago but forgot to log it at the time. I was busy studying for a bio exam at the time and didn’t really pay much attention to the flavour as I normally would. The leaves smelled amazing, though— very chocolate-y. I could almost taste the chocolate malt milkshake in my mouth.

Anyway, I have no idea how to brew mate. I read somewhere about splashing it with cold water before putting in the hot water, to preserve the minerals, so I did just that, waited a few minutes, and then proceeded to add boiling water.

The aroma was still very, very nice, though I couldn’t pick up as much of the chocolate as I was expecting, after having smelled the dry leaves. Oh well. I took my first sip and could detect a hint of chocolate, along with something that I think is what mate tastes like. I don’t remember much else about this mate, since I was engrossed in my biology textbook for the remainder of the cup.

This tea was a bit of a letdown after the high expectations I had of it after smelling the dry leaves, but overall, I still enjoyed it. Also, it’s quite likely that I didn’t brew the mate properly/am not used to how flavoured mate tastes. In any case, I do plan on trying this again in the near future. Hopefully I’ll be able to pay more attention to the flavouring by then.

Made another cup of this. For some reason, this time around I was able to detect stronger notes of chocolate. Added some half and half to it, which really brought out the chocolate, but dulled the malty flavour a bit. I’m going to increase the rating on this.

Major edit. My palate is not working — darn cold! Apparently when I brewed this, my colleague definitely had choco aroma drifting over…so I suspect I will be double-choco-wowed when my nose returns!

Hmm. Not quite sure about this one. It wasn’t what I had expected , but once I got over that, it was quite an enjoyable cup. I experienced the roasted, the cocoa nibs (but not so much choco as cocoa), missed the malt, but enjoyed the toasty warm, energizing unexpected cup I was left with. I also have a cold this week, though, so I may update this if my palate has a different opinion next week! Still worth it, especially as an alternative to coffee.

So this is a serious fave now. So much, that I’m being naughty and am trying to recreate it at home. I don’t think I’ll ever match frank, but I’m coming close.

His rocks though. This energy boosting, choco- satisfying, coffee-busting mate is a real winner. You’ll love that I originally thought I was buying the honey bush for a night time drink, though. This serendipitous mistake totally has turned my morning beverage at work around!

Overall, the mate is very nice. However, I tasted more of the roasted mate than of chocolate. Smells good and tastes good, but more like plain mate. There is a nice after taste that resembles chocolate. If you’re looking for something with a strong roasted flavour, and very little of a chocolate taste, this is a good one.

Great way to start the AM ! W/the extra kick from the Mate, good replacement for coffee. Although I do not taste the malt flavor (but then again I like my shakes extra malt-y), it is a nice round chocolate flavor…

I’ll rate this after I try it tomorrow with milk and sugar, but so far it is malty and delightful! I don’t taste the chocolate so much, but my sense of taste is poor.
